Thanks for pointing out this thread, Spiraltwist. When I created my thread today, I neglected to go back a few pages deep off the main page to see if this was already started. Search functions make me fearful.

This will be my shopping list (it hasn't changed in two hours):
    EX MACHINA #35
    ORDER #9
    SWORD #6

Unless I catch a bad review, I'm pretty much sold on Ennis/Chaykin's WAR IS HELL, even if the price is artificially jacked up a $1 for the Marvel MAX line cardstock cover. And who am I kidding, I'm a sucker for Ennis (damn you, Preacher).

n/p - Warren started the thread early this week.

The search function is your friend; it only bites the second time.

    Thor #7

didn't see anything else on the list for this week, so maybe I can pick up the 2nd SCALPED tbp, unless other things mysteriously appear at the shop to steal away my money.

Tom Horacek's All We Ever Do Is Talk About Wood. Looks brilliant.

    There's a pdf preview here.

Picked up Grendel: Behold the Devil and Angel: After the Fall — both #5. Coincidence or conspiracy?

I've been following the new Grendel mostly for auld lang syne. I remember loving the series back when it started. This new incarnation, 25 years later, is just not grabbing me the way it used to. The writing seems a bit clunky. I'm not being pulled into the story. Is that because some element is missing this time around? or because I have different tastes and expectations 25 years on? I suspect it's more of the latter.

The storyline in Angel is fun, but I have been having a very difficult time getting past the art. I loathe it. In my view, it's muddy, sloppy visual storytelling. If I weren't so invested in the characters from having watched the show, I don't think I would have lasted beyond the first few issues. Luckily, a new artist is up for the next arc. I look forward to being able to enjoy the story without the art getting in the way.

Is anyone reading Programme? I always thought it looked really interesting but haven't checked it out.

I'm reading it. Some interesting twists and turns and I love the artwork. You can wait for the tpb since there are only 3 issues left to conclude...
    • CommentTimeMar 20th 2008

Did you like the Programme throughout the whole maxiseries? I read reviews when it first came, basically saying the first few issues were good but then it sort of lost direction and got boring. Just curious, because I thought it looked interesting, too, but got scared off by the reviews and decided to wait for the trades.

That's the thing, I was never blown away by it. It gives the impression that it lacks coherence sometimes, and there are multiple changes of narrative focus that have a quite jarring effect. Too many loose narrative strands...I don't know how he's going to be able to end the story properly.

Warren, are we getting a review thread this week?

Yes. And I'm laughing at you right now.
