I've been listening to the new Portishead. There's some strange bit of video game resonance in there -- like it wants, at times, to be the soundtrack to running down rendered cement corridors. Which is a little weird, but not entirely unpleasant. It does sound, in places, like music that was saran wrapped ten years ago and has started to freezer burn at the edges. There's a... it's not exactly stale, that's not it, but some of the dissonance makes it lose flavor.

On the first two or three listens it's an album that triggers the feeling of fast movement in a heavy fog or repeated backgrounds -- thinking you're going forward but with no frame of reference it could just be circles. After a few replays, it's a bit like the foghorns I hear in the mornings -- there's nothing new to the sounds of warning and calling out for something you can't quite see, but it's a familiar comfort, too. It'll be good background music for some of those strings of nights that start to blur together.

Bit of a scattered week for me, but I did have a chance to grab some new stuff from the bowels of iTunes that were interesting.

PAROV STELAR: Good mix of chillout tunes with some housey beats, and a weird mix of old jazz records and new beat sensibility.

M83 "Couleurs - EP": Really beautiful, lush stuff. These guys have always hovered on the outer lists of a lot of DJs set lists as great instrumental pieces to break up a long set.

GEORGE CLINTON: "Atomic Dog" and COMPUTER GAMES LP: Have NO idea why this came out of, but MAN, this is the gold standard for funk in my book. No wonder rappers like Snoop Dog have ridden this for so long; it's the one to beat.

Listened to samples of Alec Empire's new CD "The Golden Foretaste of Heaven": sounds kind of tame and tinkertoy compared to his old Atari Teenage Riot and solo stuff.

a couple of select downloads from 'Guitar Romantic' by The Exploding Hearts, who are hands down one of the saddest rock n' roll died too young stories. Downloading in lieu of buying the album later this month, tho' it's been around for years.

The Exploding Hearts are great. If you like that sort of spiky power-pop you should check out The Tranzmitors.
Their MySpace

For the last two days I've been listening to Bomb the Music Industry non-stop they're a ska/punk/electronic collective but that makes them sound like the worst sound in the world when actually they're incredible. They release all their albums for free online. I think Get Warmer is my favourite at the moment.
Their website (with all their albums)

@liquidcow: Who described 13 Blues... as jazz?

Me. There are modern jazz progressions, tics and tropes in there. They stand out to me like lumps of dogshit nailed to a barn door. (I hear them in some of Battles' stuff, too, and it drives me crazy.)

Disclaimer: on the whole, I think all jazz musicians should have been executed the day after Django Reinhardt died. I had a bad experience with the Dave Brubeck Quartet at a formative age.
