Finally listened to the new Silver Mt Zion. I do not see how it could be described as jazz. It was better than Horses in the Sky but I need to give it more listens to get into it I think.

Also been listening to SikTh, the new Meshuggah album, Martriden's debut album (which is good but not as good as I expected from their self-title EP), been checking out a bit of Morbid Angel (never got into them, thought I'd give them a try), and revisiting Prick and Lucky Pierre.

Oh, wow . . . David Byrne's Music from the Knee Plays is out on CD.

I wore out a cassette tape copy of that album.

Stefan J - I got so tired of waiting years and years for Knee Plays to come out on CD that I bought the LP again on eBay last summer (I don't even own a turntable anymore but the radio station does...)

Now playing... Dr Mint Visions & Nightmares

@liquidcow: Who described 13 Blues... as jazz? Punk, folk, blues, rock, post-rock, chamber-rock, all understandable - but jazz?

Never understood all the hating on Horses in the Sky either, though I have a sneaking suspicion that those who dislike it may object to 13 Blues... for the same reasons.

Me. There are modern jazz progressions, tics and tropes in there. They stand out to me like lumps of dogshit nailed to a barn door. (I hear them in some of Battles' stuff, too, and it drives me crazy.)

Disclaimer: on the whole, I think all jazz musicians should have been executed the day after Django Reinhardt died. I had a bad experience with the Dave Brubeck Quartet at a formative age.

Someday we will hear the story about how a wild pack of dogs and jazz musicians traumatized a young Warren Ellis.

    True story.

If there's any jazz in there it certainly isn't obvious to me... more blues than anything, but I just thought it sounded a lot like typical Silver Mt Zion/post-rock stuff, except a bit more chaotic.

Regarding Horses in the Sky... I just thought it was a bit flat. There were a couple of tracks I liked on it, but on the whole I just thought it was a bit dull, and I couldn't stand Hold On To Each Other.
