I have access to a large house remodeled as a writing studio. It's a big open space I can inhabit late at night, stretch my legs, write on my laptop, set fire to something if I get stuck. It's a wonderful alternative to my apartment, which is tiny and white walled, like a mental institution.
For working out ideas, I do what everybody else does: I go for a walk. I also burn things and stare into the flames until an idea pops out and bitch slaps me. Or the cops pop out and bitch slap me.
I go into my studio and work it out on paper like a flowchart...if i get stuck I talk it out loud or find someone who will listen, I find it gels better for me when you explain it to someone.
I type it out or I draw it out on paper...crazy paper scribblings always get me going...then the second draft is done in a word processor of some kind...Word or Google Docs since that follows me around for when I get an idea...
Just need my lving room and a computer keyboard. The environment's never the problem. The problem is always to arrange my flow of ideas to something that makes sense, when I write 'em down ...
