Welcome to Chicago, Mr. Ellis. It's a hell of a town, and full on with the "Midwest Experience" that you've heard about in your most unfocused dreams/nightmares.

Truthfully, even though this is a "Wizard" convention, the reason this con is successful is because it in fact DOES have a life of it's own above and beyond WIzard's touch. This con would exist through a nuclear bomb, and the Artist Alley is actually one that fought and GOT BACK its main hall position rather than being dropped into a smaller, adjacent hall.

The artists alley at the Chicago Convention really is a thing to see. Seeing Farel Dalrymple, Eric Powell and Christopher Shy in a very relaxed setting was very cool. I even got to meet Martin Nodell, the nice old man who created "Green Lantern" before he passed.

The big booths don't hold much appeal for me. Waiting on line for 2 or 3 hours to rush past some bleery-eyed creator isn't what I go for.

We are going to try to keep lines under control for everyone by breaking up the signing times over the day and capping lines. We know that no one wants to spend their entire day standing in line at a show, so we will do everything we can to keep things reasonable. San Diego last year was a great learning curve for us, we have a few new tricks up our sleeves for this show. Also, you should know Avatar is staying completely in control of all of Warren's signings. Wizard has a whole show to run, we just have Warren's lines to run, our focus will make sure things flow well.

I imagine it to be something between flattered, nauseous and suicidally tired? In all honesty, I cannot concieve how creators do it. Add to that the sometimes...unique... mannerisms of the comic crowd and it's damn nice of you to do it at all. I saw Neil Gaiman a couple years back on his book tour. After signing for 3 hours he was chipper and telling jokes and stories. Of course, he's made a pact with lucifer, I'm sure.

William: One thing I noticed the last time I went to a convention. There was this line for Kevin Smith that seemed to wrap around about 1/2 the convention space, and that is not hyperbole. It must have been several hundred people deep. Realistically, they're not all going to get up there.

Has anyone thought of doing a cap on the line? Like at 100, 150 odd people? Like a ticketed event or such. I don't go to many conventions, so I don't know if this has been done.

pi8you: Weird thing about the Chicago Convention, it's not in Chicago. It's in Rosemont, which is just outside the city (so close the city rail line connects) but it's a pretty dead area for chicago culture. Used to be an absolute wasteland, but they've added in some restaurants, movie theaters and such in the past few years. You take the Blue Line in from the burbs and it's a grand tour of the city really, everything from the hipster hives of Wicker and Bucktown to downtown and all the museums/cultural stuff. Staying out in rosemont is actually a might cheaper than the city, as you have very few affordable hotels, it's either a scary-ass fleabag or something high-end. The moderate priced stuff is all in the collar burbs.

But seriously, do not come to Taste of Chicago. You will be ripped off while surrounded by tourists eating elephant ears and complaining about all the black people.

Yeah, Illinois joined the Smoke-Nazi states just this January.

I don't smoke, but walking into the Billy Goat or Rainbo Club (Nelson Algren and Simone De Bouvior's haunt) and not having it be smoky is simply sacrilegious.

Though, just up the road from the convention is Hala Kahiki, slinging the craziest Tiki drinks you will ever see. Things with rum that they set on fire. No food, just peanuts and 80 ways to get shit-faced on tiki-drinks.

What we're referring to: from 1998 - 2002, I ran a place called The Warren Ellis Forum. After a year or two, regular Drink-Ups were inaugurated among the regulars (Drink-Ups because the preferred British term "piss-up" didn't really translate to American), all over the world.

Millarworld came quite a time later, and was partially staffed by WEF regulars and one of the WEF moderators. Hence ideas like the DUs crossed over to Millarworld.

Regarding that Cougar. I love the advice given for encountering one.

i am definitely coming out to chicago this year, despite the fact that the last time i was there, having a brick thrown thru my buddy's rear window on the way back from a bar called Delilah's. cool bar. bricks bad.

on smoking: here in cleveland there are still a few local punk-rocker/scumbag bars that don't care and people still smoke in there regardless with no problems. anyone on the forums from chicago that know of this trend out that a-way?

i normally don't go to comic-cons, and will probably spend most of the time in a mildly alcohol-induced haze...

Jetblue's actually pretty good too. Nothing to do with their just chicago service, but I've always had the best experiences in-flight with them domestically.

The really awful ones serving O'Hare
-British Airways (used to be fantastic here, now their service and support has vaporized)

-Northwest (Simply the Anti-Christ. Unlike BA who are simply not around, NW people seem trained to not help you.)

I'm judging these based on counter service and at gate service. With NW they never anounced that our flight was delayed over 3 hours due to "Mechanical Issues" and simply lied when asked. When the flight was finally cancelled the counter staff all but demanded blodd samples just to secure rebooking. Saw one of them yelling at an older gentleman "HOW CAN I BE SURE YOU AREN'T LYING ABOUT THIS?" assuming that because he was old, he was deaf. Similar stories about NW abound around here.

And Midway is simply godawful. Smaller and cheaper lines fly out of there, but their service is smaller and cheaper too. The whole place is run pretty slipshod and security seems to only hire from the finest prisons and madhouses. I was pulled out for "extra security" and had one of these "people" ask why I had a copy of Harper's with a picture of George Bush on it (The headline was "The Case for Impeachment") and why did I hate the president? I think the fact I simply started laughing at him helped get me out of there faster.

Midway is also hard to get to, surrounded by a neighborhood that varies from block to block from "Decent folks" to "Escape from New York". If you're getting picked up at the terminal by friends it's decent. Public transit from there is not a good thing.

This is our safe, reliable and pleasant airline system here in the states.

Ok, so the convention is in Rosemont, which is just outside the city, right by O'Hare airport. Rosemont is kind of barren, though it's gotten better in the past few years.

First, here's a good general listing. Everything in Rosemont is about a 5-10 dollar cab ride from the center. Cabs are ridiculously easy to grab around there as it's a hotel/convention space. Walking is good, but, and I'm not kidding, there are places where the sidewalks ends. You end up walking on the side of the road or grass of some hotel. It's an automobile-focused suburb.

Of that list I'd recommend

-Gino's East: It's cliche as fuck seeing as this is Chicago and all, but yeah they have fantastic deep dish pizza. The place is very laid back, good to get a pie and beer and relax with people. Dinner hour (7-9) gets a little hectic on weekends, pretty laid back otherwise.

-Pancakes Eggcetera: Easily the best hangover cure in town. Wonderful breakfast foods of all kinds. Their hours are kind of weird (I think they're only open until 2 or so) but totally worth it. While everyone else is choking down McDonalds McFood for McBreakfast you can have a proper meal. The pancakes are luscious.

If you're going a bit more upscale (like 30-40 bucks a head) you've got Gibsons, Harry Carey's (you will be sported upon there, it's named for the baseball announcer) and Nick's Fishmarket. All very nice steak/fish/fowl places of somewhat equal quality. I like Nick's a bit better as their fish and lobster are just excellent.

Just a word about walking around food/snacks. There's a Target about 10 minutes from the convention center. Just tell the driver "The target on Mannheim Road". You can stock up on soda, water, snacks, whatever. The area around the convention center applies a mark-up to EVERYTHING. The gas station charges more for bottled fucking water. Because they know they can. You get a few minutes away and you pay alot less. And of course, the hotels will charge you a kidney for a cup of M&Ms, but that's everywhere.

If you're going into the city...dear god...your choices are pretty much endless. You take the blue line train in, I've lived right off of it almost my whole life and you can always find a great meal. Anything in particular you'd like to hear about, just ask.

One general recommendation for the city, Mexican food and Thai. We have some of the best you'll find outside of the motherlands. Most of them are small, family run and pretty cheap, but damn are they good.

Now I'm hungry.

Thai food, you're kind of out of luck. There is REALLY good Vietnamese place called Dung Gia in Des Plaines, bit of a trek though.

If you want good thai you have to head into the city, it's pretty abundant.

Italian, you have Gino's for pizza, Harry Carey's bills itself as an italian place with Chicken Vesuvio and all that.

Carlucci's is actually the best Italian in the area. Very expensive, but if you like Tuscan-cooking it's the best you will find. I'd put it up there with anything in the city actually.

This, this I must to go to . I keep comparing everyone's pancake's to Kerbey Lane's, based out of Austin. I'd like to see how they match up. Good pancakes are hard to find.

I recommend everyone visiting Chicago for the con go into the city and visit Hot Doug's for the likes of antelope sausage with apricot-rum sauce and Lancashire cheese. The place is crazy with gourmet hot-dog-like things. Of course, you can also get a delicious, traditional Chicago dog in there.

Yeah we're staying in the Softiel; it's one of the hotels connected by hamster tunnel. Anyway we plan on just stocking up the fridge there with bread, sandwich meat and soda's and living off that most of the weekend. I really should have done that in NY this year... food nearly broke me this year. Damn Korean BBQ!

The best Thai in the city is Tiparos on Clark St. . It's on the north side of the city near Lincoln Park/Wrigleyville (where the Cubs lose).

Fantastic food, really nice atmosphere, pretty affordable. It's not far from my neighborhood. The Panang Nue Curry is simply mind-blowing.

But the overlooked one might be Penny's Noodle Shops. They're a bit "pan-asian" doing more than just thai, but they still get There are three in the city and one in Oak Park. Great and cheap. The food is very fresh. They load you up on veggies with everything, which is very good by me. I go with the Hot Pepper Noodle and Tom Kha Soup. I'd advise getting it to go, unless you go to the Wicker Park location, they can get a little hectic on the weekends. Luckily they're all in good walking areas of the city.

If you want something a bit more exotic, try the "little Vietnam" area near Argyle in Uptown.

There's a place up there that has yet to be really discovered by too many non-vietnamese called "Pho Xe Tang", means "Tank Noodles". It's a big, bustling place, huge tables, always busy any time of day. The best thing, seriously worth coming into the city alone for this, is the Banh Xeo, crispy pancakes with shrimp, veggies and pork skin. All kinds of noodles to go with the traditional Pho soup too. And there's something so fucking cool about a Vietnamese place in the heart of a major American city with this for a logo.

Orwell left out Sticky Rice at Irving Park & Western. It's a northern Thai place and a little different from most thai places but so delicious and you get the opportunity to try a bunch of things you usually don't see (at affordable prices). Last time I was there we had some stinky fruit ice cream, fried bamboo grubs, ground pork intestine, stick rice in baboo shoots, and a curry soup w/ cubed porks blood.

The curry tuna is delicious. I think the 2nd best tuna I've ever had. (First is my room-mate seared some tuna steaks and we ate them w/ a vegetable rich noodle dish)

The Fish Ball curry at Sticky Rice is also the bee's knees.

I looked at Tank Noodles and I'm going to spend some of my GWB STFU check there for sure.

SJD: One positive thing, as a member of the military you can ride for free on the city buses and trains. Including the Blue Line, which runs all the way out to Rosemont and the convention.

The only catch is you have to ride in full uniform. Which is...odd.

I'm not going to the convention at all even though I live here. I'm likely going to be in Montreal, which I'd complain about but fuck, I love Montreal.

I can suggest a few good restaurants in the area, but I have one favorite in particular.

If you're an unrepentant carnivore, there's a Brazilian Steakhouse (or Churrascaria(sp?)) in the nearby Woodfield Mall called "Texas De Brazil". For forty dollars, you get an endless supply of MEAT. Not the crap meat that you get in plastic containers in the sandwich aisle, but seriously well-prepared and seasoned Steak. Something like a dozen different cuts, mostly of beef, but there's also a bit of chicken, pork, and lamb to be had. There is also a "salad bar" that's almost worth the price of admission by itself, and is really not well-served by being named something as diminutive as "salad bar". The mushrooms are especially good.

If you've never eaten Brazilian Steak before, here's how it works: You have a little circle of cardboard by your plate. One side is red, the other green. When you are ready for Endless Meat, you flip it over to green, and instantly half a dozen handsome gauchos are queuing up at your table to offer you a hot slice of their fresh-off-the-spit steak skewer. Of particular note is the Picanha rump roast, which is cooked in just the right amount of rock salt, and considered the house specialty. The filet mignon bite-sized pieces wrapped in bacon are quite a treat as well. Most of the meats are served medium to medium rare, but you can request well done meat as well, it just takes a couple of extra minutes.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by all the meat being offerred to you, simply flip your circle over to the red side, and the gauchos will cease their offerings until you change your mind again later. The deserts are equally amazing, although not covered by the basic dinner price. I suggest either the Key Lime Pie or the Papaya Cream, which is papaya fruit mixed with vanilla ice cream and whipped into a light froth, and then served with a blackberry vaguly-alcholholic syrup poured over it. Heavenly, and it's actually designed to help you digest all the raw steaming meatflesh you've just consumed.

In addition to the food being obscenely delicious, the service is also top notch, with waiters who actually grasp the concept of table service, and managers who give every indication of giving a shit if you have a question or complaint.
