It is a well-written and competent piece but it smacks of Ennis' own proficiencies and his unwillingness to experiment with his own skills. It is very well crafted but ultimately safe fare for all Ennis fans.

I really wish Ennis would go mad and do a Hernandez Bros-style police procedural story about cutesy Satanists and the wubbable puppy dogs that love them.

War is Hell sits squarely between ME SO HORNY and FUCK YOU GI so I'll say it's a predictable IT NOW JUST YOU AN' ME, ROUNDEYE!

ULTIMATE HUMAN #3 - Talkie, but fucking good in a talkie kind of way. Issue four is going to be the shit, no doubt about that. I've never been exposed to Mainstream Marvel's Pete Wisdom and Leader characters, but I am loving the Ultimate Wisdom Leader amalgam.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #120 - Why can't Ultimate Spidey Bendis write those Avengers books, too? I swear, it's like night and day. But anyways, this issue appears to be a preview for the upcoming Ult X-Men arc starting with next month's #93, a book I do not read, yet this issue of Ult Spidey was still hella good. The dialogue feels spot-on (like it usually does), and I really dig Immonen's pencil work (even better than Bagley's on this book).

(WOULD HAVE BEEN) ME SO HORNY:
TRANSHUMAN #1 - My store sold out, so I'm on the list for the re-up in the next week or two. I love the preview pages I've read on Pronea, and besides, it's fucking Hickman.

FUCK YOU GI:
AUTHORITY PRIME #6 - I wish I would not have purchased this miniseries. Live and learn. Luckily, it's over now. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate it; it just didn't light my fire, at all.

DAREDEVIL #106 - I missed Lark's pencils on this issue. Plus it felt like an unnecessary stop-gap between two arcs. All it has to offer is Ben Ulrich and Foggy Nelson worrying about Matt Murdock's state of mind, while he runs around moping and beating up street thugs (out of sadness). Blargh.

GRAVEL #2 - Please don't kill me. I'm thinking about dropping this one. I'm just not feeling it, but I may hold out for at least one more issue to see if anything changes. The $4 cost of the book makes me want more meat to it, but all I'm getting is a "boss battle" every issue, with action scenes I find a little hard to follow. Madmatt213, it's a fine line we walk with GRAVEL in that we're building on previous adventures while keeping in mind that new readers are seeing this for the first time. Warren's initial description of the ongoing monthly included the information that we'd be seeing seven issue story arcs, so, true, we've got a bit of the "boss battle" going on in the early issues for the brand new reader appeal, but as the first story arc progresses, we'll be seeing more tantalizing background bits on Gravel, the Sigsand Manuscript and Thomas Carnacki, and by the time issues #4 and #5 roll out... I picked up Nobuhiro Watsuki's GUN BLAZE WEST, since it was one of those series I used to read in scans and never expected to see over here. Watsuki's better known for RUROUNI KENSHIN, with good reason.

I don't remember this series being awesome, and...yeah, no, it's still not awesome. Decent shonen stuff, sure, and I love me some Westerns-what-have-speedlines, but it's not awesome. If anything, it reads like a three-quarters-assed copy of ONE PIECE with cowboys instead of pirates...

But if you're me, that's the interesting part. See, ONE PIECE's Eiichiro Oda used to be an assistant to Watsuki. You can't really see it when you look at KENSHIN and ONE PIECE side by side, though. But here? Watsuki's traded in his angular, angry-shoujo-with-Marvel-villians KENSHIN style in for a more exaggerated and bouncier shonen style, and there's some strong similarities between it and the early ONE PIECE volumes. It's the little things; they both draw pants folds the same way*, and there's a few bits in the early volumes of OP where Oda uses some very, very Watsuki looking speedline effects that he never really uses later in the series. Mouth shapes, bad guy eyes, some costume elements, little things like that.

The thing is, GBW came out two years after ONE PIECE. So, while I think Oda learned some stuff from his time under Watsuki, I wouldn't be surprised if Watsuki picked up some things from seeing what his ex-assistant did with those lessons. And I have a hunch that his ex-assistant's success might've prompted Watsuki to try something along these lines (of course, I dunno if OP was a hit yet by 2000, when GBW started).

Anyway, I'll be picking up future volumes, because this shit obviously fascinates me. And too, nobody does speedlines and ink-splatter-impacts like Watsuki.

*Also supporting Manga Pants Club theory is SHAMAN KING's Hiroyuki Takei, who was ALSO an assistant under Watsuki, is friends with Oda, and is currently slated to draw a comic series for...Stan Lee. Transhuman #1: Jonathan Hickman is bringing a new language to comics. He sits you down in this issues, talks to you about science, about commerce, about the sausage-making that would go into getting an enhancement program up and going. He makes you laugh with killer monkeys, he makes you think with devious nerds.All this told in a style of a mockumentary. Jonathan Hickman is bringing the new.

Small Slices: Jeff Brown in shorter stories. It's more nuanced than his other bio-work. I still like him a tiny bit better when he's not riting about himsef (Big Head) but this is still the best autobio comic creator in a very crowded field.

All-Star Superman #10: Every issue of this is a treat. I love frank Quietley's art so much, he gets the scale of these stories so dead on and yet he's restrained, simple and elegant. Morrison is cranking out ideas on every page that would fill series for lesser artists. The marvelous thing about this series, these two find a way to make superman interesting, compelling even. They don't put him in punch-ups or try to find villains for him, he's too big for that, they just make the stories round him bigger in scope. The only superhero book I read.

Fuck You GI:

Apocalypse Nerd: Peter Bagge is a bit off his game here. It's not that bad, but it lacks tone (eveyone is yelling all the damn time) the characters are hard to keep straight visually and it just stops. No ending, nothing, just stops. It's a solid premise (nuclear attack on Northwest strands techies in the wilderness) but it never pays off. Not his best work.

The book is just brilliantly written in both the massive amounts of ideas and imagination as well as the more subtle and human elements. Frank Quitely executes the artwork absolutely brilliantly. I can't think of another artist who can capture the body language of the characters so perfectly while establishing a perfectly believable world in a fantastic setting like the one Grant Morrison has crafted.

THE AUTHORITY: PRIME #6 of 6 by Christos Gage & Darick Robertson. It was okay. My biggest problem was with the art. It seemed very rough throughout, and I personally like Robertson when he has an inker that isn't Darick Robertson. When I first heard he was doing an Authority vs. StormWatch book, I thought he'd do really well, since he's detailed enough to work the mega-destruction of the Authority and gritty enough for the more street-level StormWatch crowd. As it happened, I felt that the art was really muddy, with some confusing fight sequences. Still, it's nice to have any kind of Authority these days...

Me so horny:

THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE AUTHORITY: HAWKSMOOR #1 of 6 by Mike Costa and Fiona Staples. This, on the other hand, was really great. It takes us back to a time before Hawksmoor was recruited by StormWatch, and he's essentially a superpowered hobo. Hobocop. It goes from wacky, over the top sci-fi, to stark, inner-city noir and doesn't lose anything. Never heard of either of these creators before, but definitely digging it. Recommended for StormWatch Vol 1 or Authority fans.

WILDSTORM REVELATIONS #6 of 6 by Christos Gage, Scott Beatty, and Wes Craig. This has been another fun series. It's kind of like Birds of Prey in the WildStorm Universe, as three Wildcats supporting chracters race around to try and prevent the devastating apocalypse seen in WildStorm: Armageddon. It's a good little tour of the WSU, if you haven't read any of their titles and does a good job of being a compete story in itself as well as setting up next month's NUMBER OF THE BEAST, from Beatty and Chris Sprouse. -Daredevil was a good buffer story. I think it's important to get an outside view of the guy every now and then.

-New/Mighty Avengers just make me wish it was next week already.

The DD Skrull reveal in NA was a bit weird, but doesn't necessarily mean Brubaker's run has been a joke this entire time....thank God.

-Usagi Yojimbo was fun. An isolated story that reads like a long Newspaper strip with the punchline on the very last panel.

-Gravel has fucking Ghost Horses in it, tearing shit up. WIN!

-Ultimate Human confused me for a bit, only because I had forgotten where #2 left off. A nice, informative detour into the origins of Wisdom/Leader. (I didn't realize you created the 616 Wisdom, Warren)

All-Star Superman was great as always. I normally can't stand the character, but Morrison/Quietly make him so interesting.

-Ms. Marvel, I'll admit, I bought for the "Secret Invasion" header at the top. Never really bought an issue of the series before. It read too much like Sex in The City with super powers. FAIL.

GRAVEL - not as 'out there' as last issue, as some people have pointed out, but I like the story thus far and I'm liking Gravel as a character. I think the only problem may be that, since it's been a "boss fight" each issue, that could get a little tired if it continues each issue as he goes after another of the Minor Seven (unless he loses a few fights, which could provide a nice switch).

JACK OF FABLES - it's a Vertigo sit-com, though this issue was slightly under par due to it focusing on the Pathetic Fallacy and Wicked John. I like them both, but as back-up players, not as the stars of the book. This issue came close to being in the FUCK YOU GI section

The Spirit - I should like this more. Mark Evanier and Sergio Aragones can both write well, and I've been a Paul Smith fan since his run on the X books in the eighties. And yet... it's just not happening. It's a fairly solid story, but it doesn't connect for some reason. On Monday, 100 Bullets volumes 10 and 11 (Decayed and Once Upon a Crime) arrived at the house. I have no idea how everyone else has been reading this, but I started about 3 months ago with Volume 1 and have quickly ripped through all the collections, enjoying every fucking bit. (As I progressed through each volume I grew increasing sympathetic towards people that have been reading monthly since 2000 - can't imagine having to wait as this unfolded).

It's tough to say who's more impressive as the series is closing out - Azzarello or Risso. (And I normally really like Patricia Mulvihill's colors, but Vertigo's insistence on printing on the most-shittiest of paper really kills her neutrals... and not to rant on about coloring too much, but most of Vertigo's books [there are obvious exceptions] lend themselves to this type of palette. Jason Aaron's books are a perfect example of this - true pieces of art that are reduced in potency because of printing on the cheap) Azzarello is in complete control of his narrative - unfolding instead of revealing - and in what is a plot driven book, made me interested in every last character. As for Risso, when I started the series I had never seen anything he had done and I found the art simple and unimpressive. Now, I question whether or not he is better than Mignola - an absolute master.

I would recommend everyone reading this, but I know that, as usual, I'm last in line. Reading it in one go you can see the storytelling developing from the early "funny animal" parodies to something far more sophisticated. For all the satire and political commentary, I just love the idea of a cynical, world weary, misanthropic aardvark. The writer can express some pretty dark thoughts about people and the world and send them up at the same time by putting them in the mind of a funny cartoon animal. Because Cerebus is surrounded by more obvious idiots, he (and the reader) can be fooled into thinking he knows what he's doing. Only for everything to collapse into rubble around him and reveal him as the biggest kind of idiot - one who thinks he's in control (the Oliver Hardy Syndrome). Not only is it very funny but I empathise with that.

SCARLET TRACEs (hard back) - Hugely recommended to anyone who hasn't read this. A beautifully realised world built on the War of the Worlds as Britain uses Martian technology to rule supreme and individual heroism and decency splatter like flies against institutional brutality. Honestly, that was my reaction for the first two books. Then I hit the third book and it was a golf club to the temple. Kirkman's a writer who pays off in the long run. All Star Superman #10: Another amazing issue, Grant Morrison solidfies his place as one of my few favorite creators. This comic in my opinion is the new quintessianl Superman book it's replaced whatever happened to the man of tommorow in my heart as my all time favorite superman story. Spoiler

Seeing a dying superman tell Lex that he's won and now it's time to ante up and do all the things he swore he could do without superman man around before his death sentence is fufilled was touching and visually rewarding.

This Issue was great and it saddens me to know only a few issues are left.

Gravel #2: I'm enjoying this but am pretty lost. I've never read the previous series or managed to grab gravel 0 so I have no sweet clue whats happening story wise. The action and dialogue is sound.Spoiler

and I think a trek to my local trade area for catching up is in order.

Ultimate Human #3: Another great Ellis production. It's so rare we have an entire issue dedicated to a villains origin story. the Leader has a very interesting rise to power and a somewhat tragic journey there. I enjoyed the dialogue in this throughly and it leaves me wondering how one more issue will tie all this up.

Scalped: Vol 1 Indian Country This book flew right under my radar. the coaxing of the dude at the comic shop and the cheap cover price warranted a purchase. This comic is amazing. The story is grim and gritty and full of amazing characters that seem to walk right out of a HBO series. The writing has air of Garth Ennis but very much an american version.
A definite suggested read to all...

Countdown #6: This is an utter waste of time. I picked up this series becuase I enjoyed 52 and hoped it could achieve similair quality. i was wrong. Its an utter waste of paper with convoluted stories that you would need to buy most of the DC books to understand. A major flaw of mine is I'm a completist and I'm locking forward to Final Crisis by Morrison so I only have 5 issues of this garbage left to go.

Countdown to Adventure #8 As a fan of 52 I picked this up to look in one my favorite mis match of space farers with Animal Man, Starfire and Adam Strange hoping to read a good story about the next step. If you feel a bit lost, don't worry that it is because you have missed something as a result of not reading the previous series. The GRAVEL ongoing monthly is the start of an all-new storyline and any pertinent information you need on Gravel is being dispensed in small doses throughout each issue. Catching up on the prior tales through the trades will give you a better appreciation of Gravel, however. They're not required reading, but I would recommend them (*plug*).

Edit: Oh- You might want to grab GRAVEL #0. Gravel 2: So far so good. I loved the "Strange xxx" series. Re-read my copy of Strange Killings: The Body Orchid.I foresee something big coming up in the next couple of issues.Intervention by one of the Major 7,maybe?

The ClanDestines 1 & 2 (Alan Davis): Seems like a decent start to the backstory on the freaky Destines, it's got an 80s-90seque feel to it, this mini-series does. The interesting part (which was also refreshing to note) was that, since the page layout is so clustered , there is a lot of story material and dialogue covered in the same number of pages, compared to a lot of current titles.

Rex Mundi #10 : Arvid continues to dazzle and the Ferreyra covers are juicy as ever.

All Star Superman 10 - The scans I saw the other day melted my heart. I could not wait to get the fuck out of work so I could get it in my hands. So worth the wait. It is pure magic on each page. The destiny of this book is now cemented - among the greatest Superman runs EVER!

Ultimate Spidey 120 - This is my marvel equivalent of all-star supes. Give me this Spidey instead of the one with the messy history. Immonen has had me since Nextwave, and I am never letting go!!!

The most common complaint for Superman is that you can't write him, as he's too powerful, but were that true fully 90% of our greatest myths and stories would never have been. Speaking of which, New Avengers and the first Mighty Avengers trade were also on my stack this week. I enjoy Bendis' work on both these titles and enjoyed them. Civil War and its satellites are an example of exactly the kind of "comics aren't for kids at all anymore" thing I hate in superhero comics, but I enjoyed it immensely regardless, and Secret Invasion sounds like it'll be fun. New Avengers, despite the controversy over this week’s issue, was nice, if very quick. Mighty Avengers was fun too, but had me wondering when all the good guys turned bad.

Transhuman 1 - Even without Hickman's art, this still looks very good, and the writing's fantastically dense as always, I particularly loved the little background nugget about what constitues cybernetic tech. And the monkeys, gotta love the monkeys.

Ultimate Human 3 - While a little put out that it was entirely Wisdom/Leader background eating up a quarter of the book, it's a really freaking good background that gets me back to the happy, horny place.

A little bit above FUCK YOU GI, Terminator 7, the end of the Painkiller Jane crossover, delivers a reasonably solid ending for what it is, but was never going to be spectacular.

Regarding the Mack controversy: People are calling him the "New Greg Land", I think that's completely unfair. Mack has continually proven that he has creative and functional ability and never hid his photo referencing from anyone. It's funny, I'm used to Mack having pretty decent anatomy, and him referencing from Hughes is the only time I've seen him slip in that regard. I don't think it's OK that he used Hughes' images without express approval, but that hardly makes him anything like Greg Land. Land repeats poses and uses reference from Hustler and other derogatory publications that demean women. The problem isn't that he photo-references, it's where he references from. There's nothing wrong with photo reference, and many fantastic artists have and do photo reference for a variety of reasons.

Hellblazer 242 - Diggle has breathed fresh life back into this title.
Ultimate Human 3 - Not that into Mainstream Marvel so I probably enjoy this more than most. Nice set up for the final issue.
Countdown 5 - (ducks the sticks and stones being thrown by some!!) I have enjoyed the past 2 issues (and maybe about 10 of the rest). FINALLY the story seems to be going somewhere and knowing that Morrison's Final Crisis waits at the end of this makes me smile.

Mighty Avengers 11 - I started buyig this and NA after Civil War hoping that the two titles would help me get into the Marvel U. Mostly confusion has followed, this issue added annoyance to that.

Gravel 2 - Now this is here only because for the second month in a row, it hasnt made it to Aberdeen in the same week as the rest of the world. Last month arrived a week later up here, so I will assume that will hppen with issue 2. I really enjoyed Issue 1 but the annoyance at having to wait has got to me this week. I know I can avoid the spoilers on t'web but I have no self control!

Berlin #15 (Jason Lutes) - Great story that's really starting to pick up steam as the Weimar Republic is about to collapse. Lutes has done an amazing job of making each faction (whether you agree with their views or not) credible, giving the entire story a depth that seems effortless. An amazing story that I wish more people were reading.

Palookaville #19 (Seth) - Continuing the "Clyde Fans" storyline. Tension between the brothers increases as they commit their elderly mother to an old folks home. Liked this story quite a bit as well and Seth's artwork is topnotch as always.

Omega the Unknown #7 - This is a bit of a cheat as it doesn't come out until next week. The cover and a six page silent story are by Gary Panter. The cover's sweet and the six-pager uses a nice limited palette - red, tan, and black. It's great! His entire story is floating around on the web (that's how I saw it) and I'm mentioning this now so people won't miss out on it. Ultimate Human #3 - Really enjoying this series, it's great fun.

All Star Superman #10 - Just... phew! Incredible book.

Blue Beetle #25 - One of those classic, perfectly executed fun superhero romps down in the DC B-list. Again, more fun!

Jack Hawksmoor #1 - Like some other folks said, this one really surprised me. Good script and great art, I didn't think it'd be anything of anything, but it looks simple and fun and good.

New Avengers #39 - Not great, but overall I'm digging the whole Secret Invasion build up. It was a well put together book, so it's on the horny side of things.

Mighty Avengers #11 - I've generally liked Bendis work on the Avengers books but he hasn't been nailing things for a few months now. There are just some great stories, interesting characters and nice scripts that are good, but he seems to be missing beats all the damn time and trying to juggle too much in too short a space of time. In a way it's nice he's not dragging all this shit out, but the timing and crossovers for the last few arcs have seemed more haphazard than planned. Still, they're good books, it just seems to me they could be MUCH better. New Avengers is generally a better book, and this week Mighty dipped for me, I didn't really enjoy much of this issue, it wrapped things up I guess, but too much was forced. Still I did like how both of the Avengers books this week featured characters talking about how the respective teams weren't really the Avengers.

Countdown #5 - Yeah, sorry lairdofdarkness, but this was a wretched, wretched comic book. I can't remember another book that left me feeling so much like I wasted ten minutes of my life since... Ultimates 3 I guess. I'm pretty sure I read some of the writers talking about how when they did 52 they were flying by the seat of their pants so they had to use world war three to wrap up some of the plots and everything got a bit rushed. Well this is no improvement. Sticking all your leads into one clumsily composed lump so that you don't drop any threads is lazy writing, and the overall plot is still seeming rushed as they some to the end of the series. I love the idea of a weekly comic book with one big plot line, but DC haven't come close to pulling it off yet. This is a mess. ]]>
