I was recently introduced to "Signal To Noise" off the Peter Gabriel album UP and it's been in constant rotation for two weeks (the director of a production of TITUS ANDRONICUS played it for the cast and design team to give us a sense of the production's world).

I cannot get enough of the two recordings of "Von" off the new Sigur Ros EPs.

Marilyn Manson (SHUT UP HE IS AWESOME) has one good song on EAT ME DRINK ME, which I didn't realize until long after I'd first listened to and then discarded the album. The song is "Heart-Shaped Glasses".

The new Killers odds-and-ends collection is pretty damn decent so far. The song with Lou Reed ("Tranquilize") isn't disappointing!

Fogus, I discovered Portishead for the first time about a year ago. It's pretty embarrassing, running around talking about this brilliant thing you've just found and being told by everyone that they're old news. I mean, I had heard of Portishead before that, of course, and knew the songs that were on the radio in the 90's, but I never really bothered. I think Beth Gibbons' eyes creeped me out for some reason. I had a similar experience when I actually decided to listen to ten by Pearl Jam in 2002, after nearly a decade of making fun of them, and finding that, "Evenflow" aside, they were really a pretty great rock band. Alas, the peril of being a snob.

This week, I'm homesick for America, and listening to records by my friends.

I thought word balloons on t-shirts would be fun too, but they just turned into self critical attacks("what are you looking at..!!!" is a popular one), bumper stickers, and advertisements. Like the race car jackets now, a few cousins of mine have them, their covered in patches of different brand names and logos, it's an odd kinda corporate camouflage, people dressing to match their enviornments. My mom got me a text shirt a few years ago that said "I have gone to find myself, if I get back before I return, keep me here.", she said it sounded like me, and she was kinda right, ive seen it a few times around, but ive never worn it in public.

What does it say about the state of low-fi punk when Dr. Frank is more famous for writing King Dork (recently picked up by Will Farrell's production company) than 20 years of making music as The Mr. T Experience.

Kind Dork is a good read. And I'm sure Frank is much better off financially as a singer than a song-smith.

I finally bought the download of Wax Mannequin's latest album, Orchard & Ire.
He's a small-label Canadian rocker with an odd sensibility. He writes startlingly earnest songs about love, robots, animals, and various other things.

From his bio page on last.fm:

Do you know the painting that you see on some greeting cards where all of the animals are sitting together, stoic and proud in the forest, and there in the background, rising in the sky, it's the earth? You have to ask “why aren't the animals trying to fight and eat each other? They are fucking enemies!” and “why is the earth rising into the sky? If the earth is in the sky, then where the fuck are we?” That shit is Wax Mannequin. Kind of lame... but so important and gripping.

I've finally converted all my old KLF vinyl to mp3 (which took about three months, between working and pretending to be a proper husband/father, after I promised myself I wouldn't start listening to any of it until I'd finished...).

Space has become my favourite commute album for the morning.

All KLF's weird off shoots too have finally made it from dusty cd to mp3, so I've been blaring 2Ks 'Fuck the Millenium' when the wife and baby are out.

Also managed to get a copy of the soundtrack to the Bill Drummond and Mark Manning/Zodiac Mindwarp book, 'Bad Wisdom.' All the fake Finnish bands and Drummond and Minwarp putting on weird Finnish accents have had me cracking up.

My friends and I have all challenged each other to actually make our definitive Top 20 songs of all time list. Mine is actually shaping up, but I've been having to dig out some old, old stuff to listen to, only to discard it... Need to finish it before end of January, or face some hideous forfeit.

(Last time I lost one of these, I hade to do Karaoke on acid... which was funnier than it should have been...)

I started my commute to the Loop with the new Cocorosie album, which was recommended to me by a friend who usually had impeccable musical taste. It was cute and fun at first, sort of like Bjork mixed with MIA with a little bit of Tom Waits' hell circus thrown in. The honeymoon was over by the fourth track and it merely became precious and really irritating. At work I played my usual soothing workplace soundtrack of Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, and the absolutely EXCELLENT (and Uncle Warren recommended) Burial. I went and saw the Chicago Greek mythology themed' metal band Lair of the Minotaur at Reggie's and now i'm listening to Cleansing by Prong on the way gone, a blast from the distant past of middle school. That is my Day of Noise.

There's a ton* of good Concrete Blonde. I guess Best Ofs and compilations are supposed to be embarassing, but if you want a good cross-section of their career "Recollection" is a good best-of. "Joey" is actually not one of their best songs. But I have to admit that a lot of the reason I like CB is that I'm a heavy smoker who likes to sing along with things, and Johnette Napolitano's voice is just about exactly my range. Complete with Camel Rasp.

Our customer base is pretty varied, and there's Judas Priest on the jukebox (which I actually pay money to play during Sunday brunch when the elderly churchies are in), but Suicide Commando doesn't go over very well with the Friday lunch crowd, which is a lot of "sensitive" artschool types. Who only seem to like songs about necrophilia if they're "ironic."

At Land by 3epkano. They're a Dublin post rock band who started off doing live soundtracks to silent films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. as such the album is less like the usual Mogwai or Sigur Ros rip off's that plauge the genre, it's more like Angelo Badalamenti with the violin work.

I think he's fantastic live and I've seen every live show I could get to since he was on tour promoting Skittish alone in a rented car. If you ever listened to Soul Coughing you'll recognize the same bizarre but skillfull lyricist who wrote "Circles", "St. Louise is Listening" and "True Dreams of Witchita" but the muscial style is far more minimal as he is often touring alone or with only a few band members.

If you want a better idea of what his new work sounds like live, he has a pretty liberal recording policy for his shows and several of them from the current tour can be found online at places like The Archive.

I have to listen to music by the album. If it doesn't come in a logical order, I don't know what to feel.

Agreed on the album listening. I gave up shuffle play in 1995, so the wee iPuds are especially confounding to me. I love technology, just not the dumbing down of things artistic.

Although the real reason I quoted your post is because our copy of said VNV Nation album went missing some months ago, and neither the woman nor myself have had the heart to open every other CD case in hopes of finding it. Yet.

I downloaded the Stolen Babies album There Be Squabbles Ahead the other day to check it out. The new drummer for Dillinger Escape Plan is in SB, so I wanted to have a listen to it, and god damn is it good.

It has a bit of a Fantomas-y vibe to it, but it's less crazy, more structured than that. It's loud and heavy (but not too heavy), interesting and just a little bit crazy.

Now I'm going to have to try and track the album down at a local CD store when I actually have some time away from work that doesn't involve drinking and sleeping.

While on a trip to beautiful Reno, NV with some friends, this starting playing on my buddy's ipod, and I was immediately captivated. It's a collection of 60's French pop. I love it, and I'm not entirely sure why. It's probably because I don't know what they're saying, and to me it amounts to all catchy poppy goodness with no cheese or fromage or whatever.

Oddly enough it's put out by a night club in Munich called The Atomic Cafe.

Venetian Snares is a 'him' and yeah, easily the best glitch/breakcore/whatever else it's called, out there.
You should check out his latest release Pink + Green, it's only an EP, so it's short, but it's the epitome of the breakcore genre.

For some reason I always go to these threads on a forum first.

Right now I'm listening to lots of The Longcut, Sunchase and Burial's new album.

On the subject of Untrue, I didn't really like it at first - it wasn't really what I was expecting, I guess. But today, I was walking back from the station and the broken "kissing you... tell me how you know, tell me how you know.." vocals over the apocalyptic drone of 'Archangel' came into my head and I haven't been able to stop listening to the album since.

Sunchase is a good complement, I've found. He's a drum & bass man, but the general sound of most of his releases is just an up-tempo version of that of Untrue: that sort of end-of-the-world sadness and doom coasting under a wave of short, sharp drumbeats.

And The Longcut, well. They just happen to be one of my favourite bands. I don't see nearly enough people listening to them, so here's a nice video:

cock rock disco is very good, with lots of free stuff to sample. drumcorps is an ex new england metalcore guy (alias for aaron spectre who spins a lot of ragacore and less evil stuff) who moved to berlin and chopped up slayer and snapcase with digital hacksaws. and it's the home of duran duran duran.

daly city records is another. a little more twee, but great. start with Mochipet. he also did some great remixes of spank rock. lots more free samples.

The mp3 tags on those files are incorrect. The first file is adjust+in broken key, the 2nd is cutups then everything is right until the doormouse file. Doormouse's set is only the first 30 min or so and after that fishhead starts djing and halfway into the file labeled as fishhead xanopticon starts his set.

Yeah doormouse is gabba-kick stuff and has transitioned into more of a cut up woo party style as of late.

P.S. Xanopticon is pretty much the hardest breakcore there is IMHO. Nano-samurai beats cutting carbon chains for sure.

I am listening to the fantastic audio recording of Philip Pullman's the Subtle Knife it a full cast unabriged adaptation easily the most 3 dimentional audio I have ever listen to its the sequel to the Golden Compass I loved book the but thought the movie sucked it was was over sanitised and rushed seen that deserved twenty minutes were chopped down to only 5 and left the end of the book . I'm glad it's did not doing what was expected if it flops it will be because it treated the souce materiel with disrespect not because it is thought to be anti Christian

Gnarls Barkley - "St Elsewhere" Needs little introduction. Fairly decent pop record.

Fall Out Boy - "From Under the Cork Tree" Yes, Wentz, the acronym is "FUCT," very droll. Stump, more pop-rock excellence, well done, boy. Have a house point.

I'm not entirely sure where the distinction lies - would I be close in thinking that early Napalm Death is hardcore grind whereas early Carcass is metal grind?

More to do with lyrical content than significant musical distinction, IMO. TBH, the lines between these things are far too blurry. LDOH are indeed a goregrind band, but so were Carcass in the "Reek..." era, based on the medical-textbook-lyrics and pitchshifted vocals. I think that owning a pitchshifter is a silly thing to put a band in one genre rather than another, personally. Early Napalm - pre-Scott Burns - I would just call plain old grindcore.

fall of troy is ok recorded, but live they just played fooooreeeeeverrrrrrrr the time i saw them. ironic, since immediately after them AN ALBATROSS played like 20 minutes of crazed emoviolence.

and yeah, the lines of grind kinda fall under personal opinion. i would say some of the differences would be diy touring, lyrics that arent gore/porno related, and screamed/shouted vocals rather than cookie monster growls are my main factors for determining the more punk side of grind. but i'm also a snob. thats not even getting into the money oriented corporate grind of HEWHOCORRUPTS, INC (who are amazing, and not seriously corporate at all. tongue in cheek songs about maximizing profits and such. youtube their video for "master of profits" and you will crack the hell up)

uh, with grind ALONE there's about ten or so subgenres. it is kind of dumb, but it becomes necessary when there are splinters of a genre that are so very different. example: if you hate cookie monster vocals and songs about stabbing, goregrind isnt for you (in this case, me). with electronica, the same thing is true with the exception of some subgenres that seem to have two or three names for the same thing.

Just got HypnoSkull's "Panik Mekanik," so it's been crackhead-speed breakbeats for the last couple of days. I love them because they're silly, and also because I get a kick out of people who try to see how fast you can set a drum machine before it just blurs into a farting noise. They fill the same gap in my spazzy little musical soul as Melt Banana, I think. And I'm pretty sure if you listened to it long enough, you'd get a bitchin' case of tachycardia.

As far as micro-micro-anal-subgenre-izing goes, it's been around for years, but Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music is totally amusing. I can get lost in it for hours. It's a flash-driven ungodly huge flow chart of pretty much every kind of subgenre of electronic music, ever*. With samples. Everything from the Ghetto Boys to Gabbercore to freakin' Enya-type new age crap. The blurbs are hilarious**. "There are no drugs that would ever make you want to dance this fast."

Listening to A Hawk And A Hacksaw's album The Way The Wind Blows.

Fun gypsy music with some klezmer influences.
I solidly enjoyed them when they were playing live and I was deeply drunk, so I've grabbed the album off emusic to see how I like them now.
The main people are Jeremy Barnes (drummer from Neutral Milk Hotel) and Heather Trost (violinist who used to play for foma) but they seem to hook up with lots of other people.

The album I grabbed (and that I'm liking so far) has them in Romania playing with Fanfare Ciocarlia and is definitely reminiscent of what I heard live.
Sets my shoulders to auto-shimmy and before I know it my whole body gets involved. If nothing else at all, it is definitely the sort of music to trick me into shaking it when I'm up far too early in the morning.
We'll see what I think when I'm all the way through the album I guess.
But live! With drinking! I completely and totally recommend without any reservation at all!
