@shad0903

I checked Marvel and Dark Tower #2 is scheduled for this week. I picked up the original miniseries in floppie form, and am buying up this series, too, but have yet to read any of them. The simple reason for that is that I have yet to read Book 7 of The Dark Tower novels, even though I bought it day of release. One of these days I'll get to it, and I do know that the first miniseries was basically an adaptation of Wizard and Glass (so I've heard), but I'm still holding off until I read the final novel (I'm odd that way).

 @dnwilliams

I wouldn't consider Casanova #13 a good jumping on point, only because it's issue six of a seven-issue arc. I'm guessing you'd be pretty lost, because a fair amount of stuff has happened in the previous five issues, though Matt does a good job on getting new readers up to speed in the intro to each book. That said, Fraction's backmatter is an awesome incentive to purchasing the (no-so-monthly) floppies, as opposed to waiting for the trades. Tough call, but if you can find the back issues starting at #8, you should go that route.

 @Keats

Have you seen the previews for Secret Invasion #1? Yu's pencils look so much cleaner. My main concern with Secret Invasion is that it may end like all of the other Marvel crossovers in recent years (anticlimatic, at least that's how I've felt about them). I don't feel like spending $4+ on eight issues of this miniseries, to find out in the end it was a whole lot of smoke-blowing. I'm trying to cut down on my mainstream Marvel books, anyways, and I think the only books that SI might affect will be Fantastic Four (I'm a Millar bitch) and Uncanny/Astonishing X-Men.

 @JTraub

Yeah, Nick Fury is the strongest pull Secret Invasion has on me. I'm hoping that the IRON MAN: DIRECTOR OF SHIELD book will be repositioned as a Nick Fury book, since it is quite unanimous that the Iron Man character can not support the sales of two ongoing series (at least once the movie's heat dies down). If Marvel doesn't pull another "Incredible Hercules" and move Nick Fury into the ongoing Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. "spy" book, they'll miss a golden opportunity at big, SI fallout sales.

 @warren

It was an exaggeration, and one based solely on Newarama message board comments. Yet, with that said, the Beat claims that February's Iron Man #26 sold 36,607 copies. Surely the numbers will go up with Secret Invasion and the movie around the corner, but we will also have a super-awesome, Fraction-penned Iron Man-in-superhero-mode ongoing series on the racks, too. I don't think I'll be the only shopper that will only purchase the new Incredible Iron Man book. Now, if Marvel were to give Nick Fury the Director of SHIELD book (if he isn't back on duty as director, they can name is something else), I would, more likely than not (maybe, possibly depending on the writer(s)/artist team), buy this newly-christened Nick Fury book. Because I love men with eye patches.

So, as you can see, my usage of the word "unanimous" was wholly warranted.

I like super spies. I even hear a guy formally over at DC have some more free time. It will be about before the first Warren issue, be a good read and look good. I can wait.

 @Mojo

Just having an impatient fan moment then.

With the bad week (month, year, ever) the fanboys are having this is the time for the WC geek-sh crowd, myself and yourself included, to be doubly careful to not be like them.
Enjoy the work, if the work is not ready yet, enjoy some other thing instead, and so on.

Looking at my DCBS order I seem to have some X stuff on the week too. Trying the first issue of Young X-men to see if I enjoy it as much as I did the New X-men trades despite the change from Kyle/Yost to Marc Guggenheim. For some reason I always feel compelled to support a lawyer who has become a comic writer (and yes I am aware of the controversy surrounding him and I don't think its relevant here).

it is quite unanimous that the Iron Man character can not support the sales of two ongoing series

It was an exaggeration, and one based solely on Newarama message board comments...

...so, as you can see, my usage of the word "unanimous" was wholly warranted.

One of these things is not like the other.

If The Beat says an issue of IRON MAN is doing 36.6K, you can assume it's actually doing at least 40. It's spiked as high as 85K in the last 12 months, and with the movie and the next Marvel uberplot machinations, it is in fact safer to assume that there will be further sales spikes on the book over the next twelve months. More sales spikes, in fact, than were found on PUNISHER when that became a two-book property -- both of which seem to survive handily.

Nick Fury, on the other hand, has never sustained remarkable sales or an ongoing series for any notable length of time since Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos. (SHIELD ran forty-odd issues from 89-92 approx, but forty-odd issue runs weren't notable back then. Fucking SLEEPWALKER ran 33 issues...) One reason why people felt they could get away with outright killing the character in the mid/late 90s.

 @ JTraub

Controversy? I wasn't aware of any? I just haven't liked the look of his choice of team, in particular that Blindfol has been made standard superheoine hottie fare now.

As for trying to not be like the rabid fanboys...I think with X-Men and the X-related books on a whole, I think I get a little over-protective. They were the first comics I really got into (which was around the same time as Warren's run on Excalibur btw, still some of my favourite comics of all time (and I know have an urge to pull them out of storage and read again lol)) and they were there for me during a difficult time. An odd phrase to be sure, as how can a comic 'be there for you'?

But as a young gay man coming out, I saw the parallels between the situation of the mutants, and my own. And the stories meant a lot and were comforting to me as a result. It's why now I get overly protective over certain characters and hate when someone just doesn't get the X-Men.

This all sounds gloriously geeky and painfully embarassing, but I dunno, made that personal connection at a young age and its the one book I get rabidly fanboyish over. Which is why I'm glad they have great writers on the books atm or coming up.

Though I would love to write them myself, and I thankfully have friends who tell me when my scripts become too fanboyish lol.

Anyway, I am once again deviating a thread, so I'll finish by saying I'll also be picking up Action Comics #863 as Geoff Johns is the only person who can make me give a crap about Superman (okay, Morrison too, when he releases something) and hunting for The Killing Joke Deluxe Edition, as it looks stunning. And wondering why DC haven't been releasing many books I'm interested in lately.

When I look back at that time, I realise that some of my favourite writers and artists were working on the comic books at the time. Picked up a number of things, but Transhuman is the only one I've been able to read yet (damn you, two full time jobs). Thus far the art is substantial without being distracting, and the dialouge is intelligent without being TLDR. It also brings up an interesting debate between the genetic and cybernetic branches of Transhumanism which I'll start a discussion on in Mad Science.

dnwilliams

i'll pick up the trade (an amazing £8!) but is #13 a decent jumping on point, anyone know?

NO! DO NOT JUMP ON AT #13! I think madmatt was being a little subtle, so I'm being very unsubtle. Issue #12 was possibly the biggest issue of the series thus far, and missing out on the kick-in-the-nuts that was #12 would be a big mistake.
You really want to try and collect all the floppies if you can.

 yeah, i have to second that. casanova is amazing issue to issue, but after #8, there isnt really a concise jump on. its best to go back to that one in order to get the full value out of the story.

 I need to talk to the guys at my local (well, nearest) comics store about Avatar comics. They get the trades, but not single issues. And it's not because they only carry superhero comics, they've got Vertigo, Wildstorm and Dark Horse aplenty, and a healthy, if somewhat more limited, helping of IDW and Image. But no Avatar. The people running the store are pretty cool folks, though, so I'm hoping I can convince them to start getting it.

 Anyone who is thinking about getting Punisher War Journal: do it. It's a brilliant book that manages to celebrate the seriousness and ridiculousness of having a character like The Punisher in the Marvel universe, without resorting to the grim (if brilliantly written) bloodbath that is the Garth Ennis punisher.

Plus, it gave us a gun that shoots swords. For that alone it is a work of high art.
