From today (Monday) until Friday, Richard von Stevens VIII, creator of the brilliant DIESEL SWEETIES webcomic and newspaper strip, workaholic and 24/7 cryptoid-stabbing netizen who bleeds bacon when you cut him will be hanging out in this thread. His comics: he will show you them. Including e-books and stuff. And probably also talking about reptoids and Art Bell. He is here to take your questions and make you pay attention.

Say hello to R Stevens now.

-- W

I'm here and making coffee LIVE on the nubber-wub. Howdy!

***

Ted: It was primarily an accident. I had my first boring desk job and gave myself a month to design and start a comic strip while financially stable. (I'd been freelance before that) Robot love was the concept and I thought my inked art style was too typical and boring to get anyone to notice. A couple weeks into experimentation, I made some icons in Photoshop and the rest just happened.

With a complete script I can theoretically do all the production on a strip in an hour or so. I've gotten a little too into editing and re-editing as I work, so a typical comic is more in the 3-hour range. There's a lot of tiny kerning, coloring and facial adjustments that I can't stop myself from doing. It is becoming an illness.

 Ooh, exciting times!

Richard, thank you for colourful robottery you deliver daily. It does make my time on the internet a good deal more robotty. While you're here, I'd like to poke you a bit and say "More Torpor please!", because I miss that little guy.

With regards to other webcomics, we had a discussion a few months ago on my Ell-Jay about how ace Scary Go Round is and why you're not such a big Achewood fan. I still think Scary Go Round is the business, and will continue to love Achewood, too.

Also, I recently caught up on QC after taking a break for a few months. In about eighty strips, the action had moved forward I think 48 hours, so I'm figuring the odd burst of archive reading every few months is the best way for me to enjoy those adventures.

This makes me sad. Do you see a way to build some bridges?"

Do you mean that people tend to read only one comic-style or the other? I don't think it's quite as separate online as it is in the real world just due to cost, but it could be better. Strips seem to be more prevalent on the intertube simply because people like them with their morning coffee. Linkage seems to stay mostly on one side or the other, probably because the creators of one kind of strip enjoy that kind of strip.

I bet we could blur the lines nicely if some of the comic strip types wrote longform works using their name and/or characters.

One of the immediate attractions to Diesel Sweeties is the indelible mark of the video game systems that many of us grew up with. Heck, the main character for the Atari game 'Adventure' was just one pixel!

After I got into Diesel Sweeties though, I think that the comic really works well on facial expressions alone. Not to detract from the rest of the strip, mind you. I love the quotables, "Poorly chosen words are the most effective contraception known to man" for example. And then there's the easter eggs; Intricate, pixelated represenations of Chewbacca and other childhood friends...

So, here's to boosting your ego! I think I should order a T-shirt now....

Right on, sarge! I will claim to have skipped the PDF books because I didn't want them mistaken for April Fool's jokes.

I recently scared my editors and made geeks happy by uploading PDFs of my old comics, 200 pages at a time. The hope is to overcome "archive fear" and pick up new people who are scared to start a comic with a huge archive. (I'm at 1,983 comics in the web archive alone so far.) Website traffic is slightly up, which proves that ebooks don't hurt page views on large archives.

Three of the ten volumes are up now, the fourth should be out tomorrow:

Volume 1
Volume 2
Volume 3

Response has been wonderful- I have no idea how many have downloaded from the various torrents and mirrors, but it's definitely in the tens of thousands. Old readers are digging into and archiving material they haven't seen since before 9-11. New readers are coming in via the Creative Commons and Pirate Bay channels. The comic piracy networks are supposedly converting it to .CBR and adding to the weekly scanned batches. (weird to steal free work, but no complaints here)

I don't make a lot off books and these comics are in so many formats I could never fully archive them, so it's been a fabulous way to get the work back out there. It doesn't threaten my business and I hope to cherry pick the best comics and art for a big, shiny art book this summer. Everybody wins!

 @ Cavemonster
T-Shirts (and other apparel) are definitely a winner right now for online comics, for personal sites too (see ISO50 etc). I think about 50% of my tee purchases are from web comic sites, the other half from traditional t-shirt sites, designer or otherwise. The one thing that I think makes this possible is the quality over the last few years. As Mr Stevens points out a lot of web comics in the past used Cafe Press, which were quite frankly awful, and I don't just mean the fabric and printing quality, the design of those shirts was also horrible. Now everyone has different tastes but most people, myself included, won’t buy tees unless the design is well thought out, produced to a high standard and actually says something.
I think it's a testament to Richard that the t-shirts look great and use themes people want to wear, I know a fair few people who have got one of those elements wrong and haven't had great success.

@ Midweeker
I too read CTRL-ALT-DEL, it's one of the few sites I visit daily, very chuckle-worthy.
I also visit a few other games related comics, most regularly Little Gamers and VG Cats. I also used to read Girly, but I lost interest about a year ago.

Mr. Stevens, your existance in the webcomic community has been one of the reasons I've continued reading comics online and offline. It's heartening to know that someone who makes something that looks so simple at first can stick it out for so long in a community that seems to vaporise at a moment's notice. If you're still around, I have a question for you. What would you say were the most influential webcomics of the online boom? And what are/were their strengths?

Sorry to wait so long to post something non-bacon related, but you know. Work....n...stuff.

Ben- what would you consider the "online boom" for comics? I think we're in the midst of the real boom now.

The oldest strips are picking up mainstream audiences, new strips are popping out of nowhere and outgrowing the old ones (very much unlike how comic books work) and there's already an entire generation of adults who have never read comic strips on paper. I think thing are gonna get VERY interesting in about five years. We just need better wireless data access and higher-resolution handhelds.

I guess boom is kind of an inaccurate term. In my head comics online exploded around the same time that MEGATOKYO began to draw a more mainstream audience and Scott McCloud put out REINVENTING COMICS. But that could have just been my own little mind going pop. How about I just change my question to who was your biggest influence as a digital artist when you began making Diesel Sweeties?

Thanks for the response either way. ^_^

 Mr. Stevens.

Diesel Sweeties makes me laugh so hard and loud it disturbs people who work near me and share my living enviornment.

Thank you for this.

Less Cowbell is now a means of killing the quote-duels that spawn in my office and amonst friends. Shaming people by yelling "LESS COWBELL" is a powerful thing.

I also make use of a "CRUSH THE COOK!" apron while making many kinds of pork-based meals. Including, yes, bacon.

I offer you, the finest bacon product an 0.13 image search on google can yield as a little bit of a thank you.

In addition, speaking of the reptoids and the greys, I offer this story.

Back in the early 90's there was a Chicago Radio host named Bob Lassiter. He was famous for giving long, rambling monologues when people refused to call in an "behave" on the phones. One afternoon I listened, rapt with attention, while Bob outlined in exacting detail just how the reptoids and grey's controlled the media, the governments of earth and planned on using mankind as fodder in an intergalactic war. He did this with no commercial breaks, few pauses and a completely neutral tone of voice. He spoke, perhaps read, for nearly an hour and then changed subject and refused to address the conspiracy, dumping any callers who tried to bring it up.

I'm a rational human being, an adult with a college education and a good steady job. I have a loving girlfriend, a cat and pay my taxes and bills on time.

In the back go my head, I believe that reptilians and grey aliens run us like a toy train set and that Bob Lassiter was warning us all.

Thanks again for the fantastic comics, buttons, shirts, art, reptoids.
