Apparat started as a series of four comic 'singles', set in a sort of alternate reality where the superhero genre never took over comics. Each comic was a self-contained story with different pulp influences, an educated guess of how, for instance, the Doc Savage or Shadow type stories would look today, had they been given the chance to evolve, instead of being replaced and incorporated in superhero stories. They were collected in a single volume titled 'Apparat: The Singles Collection Volume One'.

And now Warren is using the Apparat label to do graphic novellettes, starting with Crécy.

Awaiting with a sense of pleasant anticipation, as I would a good dinner.

(Crecy was a good project in a good format--something I was glad to pick up and read--but it's not really my favored food in terms of subject matter and historical period. This, on the other hand, looks as though it were specifically designed to cater to my whims and exploit my fascinations. Er. Thanks, Warren.)

I really like the one-shot, non-locked-in format for publishing comics stories--moving toward the same sort of flexibility and range that prose publishing offers, for both small and large stories. Fun Home was a great example of that sort of publishing and marketing working for a larger book (albeit one put out by a mainstream publisher and with nonfiction subject matter), and other indie and semi-autobio comics have done very well at it (Same Difference springs to mind, though it has "extras"--other stories included). I hope to see more of the smaller, weirder stuff, too.
