well, since the live show thread was probably about to take a turn towards this, i figured i would head it off. as some of you know by now, i am a music nerd/snob (figured i would be honest...) and i tend to dislike the whole"finding random bands on the internet" thing. i would rather hear some word of mouth info from you guys. lets share some local bands (please please please try to keep it that way) that you feel are meritorious. include as much info as you can, with either embedded mp3s or links to band pages. i will compile a solid phoenix one shortly, feel free to go nuts on this thread. information!!! is!!!! free!!!

oh, you speak my language so fluently...
bands mostly arranged in order of how well i know them:

look what i did- post-whatever-the-fuck-you-kids-call-it-hardcore with major pop overtones. if anyone likes, my boyfriend is their "official historian", which means if you ask him nicely, he is authorized to send you any and all of their back catalog. his aim screenname is feildmouse (spelled just like that).

born empty- superhappyfun power-pop, with bongos. also, they have lots of hair.

paper rival- formerly known as keating. went from a very emo band to a very... indie band. don't know how else to describe them.

spoken nerd- secular-christian whiteboy hip-hop. if i have my story straight, he grew up on tennessee's resident hippie commune.

darla farmer- i've only seen them once, but they were awesome. they have a horn section.

...and because i am a supportive girlfriend, allofher twitch. he lets me mix his songs.

Look, I will start off with this. I am from Louisville, Kentucky (USA). I go out in this sleepy lil hamlet often. I know lots of local artists. Different vibes, and good for that. Old school faves here are Bodeco, which my friend Southside is the newest guitarist. Also, he is doing background guit for spoken word with Ron Whitehead (Nobel nominated poet, local University prof, red wine drunk and all around kook), a collaborator with Lee Ranaldo, Sigur Ros and Hunter Thompson. Fuckin' great live. Also check out J.Glenn (one man band and Hasil Adkins fanatic), Slow Break (as close and as far away to Sonic Youth in the 00's you're gonna find), Wax Fang, My Morning Jacket, Ultra Pulverize (wow dunno howta classify), Adventure, The Glasspack ohh fuckit any of these local cats probably have myspace vanity projects and their friends will lead you in the way of the city's finest. My keyboard's been drinking and I need to buy it another round.

Many Machines on Nine - MM9 have gone through a few stylistic changes since they formed, and the changes keep coming. They started off sounding a little bit nu-metal, but then dropped their turn-tablist and for a good while were hardcore/metal with a strong electro undercurrent. Now they're going even more electro, and you could almost call them Dance Hardcore/Metal. Talented, funny and humble guys. Even though I live about 1,000 Kms away from their homebase, I consider these guys local 'cause I've travelled down to Sydney a few times to see them.
Also, MM9's frontman Daniel Sutherland has (had?) another project called Switchkicker. It's on the backburner for now, maybe for good, but it was awesome while it lasted.

The Red Paintings - These guys have actually done a bit of touring in the states with Dresden Dolls (don't hold that against them), so you might have heard of them? They're sort of arty rock, they dress up in kimono's, have statues of aliens and the virgin mary on stage, have people painting at their live shows (both paid artists and people out of the crowd) and play a slightly-progressive, slightly-experimental brand of rock.
These guys are from Brisbane, so they are actually 'local' for me.

I know loads of good local bands, dude. That's something the area I live doesn't have a lack of ... here we go:

JAPANISCHE KAMPFHÖRSPIELE
Progressive Grindcore or something like that. Maybe allready internationally known, but they're from my area and I watched their development from an early state on ...
http://www.myspace.com/jaka

ANDORRA ATKINS
Post-Hardcore?/Mid90ies-Screamo?/whatever. Had to change their name from "Kill.Kim.Novak" when the actress heard of 'em. Great band. They're pretty intense, live.
http://www.myspace.com/andorraatkins

GODS WILL BE DONE
Thrash Metal. Their guitar player and main songwriter's a Brit by the way. They're very good!
http://www.myspace.com/gwbd

STEVE AUSTIN
Band named after that bionic dude played by Lee Majors. It's more of a fun-thing, allthough the music's pretty good and like a Grind/Metal/Hardcoce-mixture. Together with the sometimes really silly german lyrics they're something like our local A.C. or S.O.D. ... even if not that provocative ...
http://www.myspace.com/stefanosten

WOOF
Hardcore-Band some of the Austin-guys play in as well.
http://www.myspace.com/woofhc

THE VERY END
Just a good melodic, slightly progressive Metal-Band combining modern and tradtional aspects of the genre.
http://www.myspace.com/theveryend

THE RULES
The TVE Singer's 2nd Band, playing Rock'n'Roll.
http://www.myspace.com/royalruhrpottrock.

TONY GORILLA
Talkin' about Rock'n'Roll - these guys are doin' something like Motörhead with Danzig-Vocals ...
http://www.myspace.com/tonygorilla

HATEDRIVE
Stupid name, but great songs. Modern Kick Ass-Metal or whatever you would like to call it.
http://www.myspace.com/hatedrive

and for those who felt of this as too much noise and testosterone-driven "heads against the wall" kind of crap, I give you ...

ELEKTROKILL
..another act with a stupid name but great music. This is more of an experimental (surprise:) electronic Act. Can't tell you an exact genre definition for what he's doin'.
http://www.myspace.com/elektrokill

and if you like stuff like that, you should check out
DAGHOTI
as well. Some dork from cologne I know (Hello Hofee ("lc"), If you're still googleing all day, where in the web people talk about your crap, go eat my shorts or something!) making music with his computer and actual instruments....
http://www.myspace.com/daghoti

I think this is enough. For now.

i was going to just go nuts and get on every good local phx band, but i decided to just keep it concise, with the best of the best. oh yeah!
george moshington! circle pits and sing alongs, fast punk fun. their shows can get pretty out of hand, ive been: shot with fireworks, mobbed by naked dudes, pasted with flour, water, and birdseed, hit with large sandwiches and oversized cupcakes, etc... oh yeah and my friends ass being lit on fire with rubbing alcohol. im proud to have sang for these guys as a fill-in when needed.
red queen! metallic grind/violence. they have only played one show, but these four guys have about 9 bands, four records and about five tours under their belts between them so they are pretty tight right out of the gate. very gorlock influenced, especially the drums.
netzeah are some of the aforementioned dues, but this is more of their indie rock with loud parts band. definitely not punk or metal, but very mid 90s east coast emocore influenced.
landmine marathonare on the verge of something big- they are metal, but coming from a grind/diy background so they are still good. i believe they recently referred to their sound as "battle shred", lots of bolt thrower and suffocation influence with brutal female vocals. also tour a lot, keep an eye out if you live on the west coast-they tend to hit you guys about twice a year.
run with the huntedsound straight edge, but i dont think they are 100%- nice guys who play melodic boston type hardcore with massive MASSIVE sing alongs. they hit up socal a lot as well, so keep yr eyes out for that. also:movie nerds.
warfairare blown out crust noise grind. brutal as fuck, too bad they draw a crowd of mostly retard crusty kids. with dogs. and ass flaps. (they dont like me).
and lastly (for now, hahahaha i have a huuuge list) subvacuum of nothing are a straaaange two man prog/hardcore/violence beast. they are fucking monstrous live, and their recordings sound like a whole nother band. both are very good ways to experience them. they are very happy to be gplaying their first "big" show in a week and a half with dillinger escape plan, and i am very happy for them.

now keep em coming!

I just got home to Portland, Oregon, and I don't really know where to start.

So I'll start with Run On Sentence, whose album blew me away last week. It's a mix of old genres, swing and folk and blues and lots of styles I have trouble putting my finger on. As far as the MySpace songs go, "Carrie Pt. II" is upbeat and something the Asylum Street Spankers or even Squirrel Nut Zippers could cover, "Afterlife Pt. 1" is just awesome, and "Stonewall" is really a sad portrait of the sort of dudes we all used to hang out with before they hit a critical mass of fucking up.

Day of Lions just put out their first album with an actual band backing Gena Gastaldi, but her gorgeous voice still carries it. It's kind of bittersweet folk-pop.

Speaking of bittersweet, Per Se is a great mix of it and bubblegummy-yet-very-clever pop songs. It's one girl with her guitar, looping pedal, and a set of home-made wings she wears, and she will do stuff like write a song where the first phrase of each line is the last phrase of the line before it. "Adeline sits and eats her fries and shake/ But she can't shake the thought that astronauts are watching her with eyes of blue./ Blue as ice that will encase the next Ice Age/ And ages later tapes and microfiche are all that's left of me and you."

The Builders and the Butchers are the golden child of the current dark rootsy movement that Run On Sentence are part of. Militantly acoustic music that's like rock and roll invented by kids in the South during the Great Depression. And it's all about death, and graves, and lakes, and how all true love will leave you on your knees in the rain. Probably my favorite Portland band.

Though Loch Lomond is right up there. Epic chamber folk, with a lead singer whose voice can be hugely towering or incredibly fragile.

Fist of Dishonor is a ninja rock band. Their shows alternate between battles with Mexican wrestlers and kung fu badasses, and really catchy, fun songs about being a ninja. "My baby's a ninja, I expect him to be untrue/ I know it's just the way of the clan when he/ Uses the last of my shampoo." And speaking of Portland's big persona band movement, there's The Metal Shakespeare Company (formerly Dagger of the Mind), who sing soliloquies from Shakespeare while playing power metal. And they've got authentic Elizabethan stage banter (when the drum set brakes: "Fetch us your hammer and tongs!").

Fuck. I'm going to have to come back to this thread. THERE'S TOO MUCH AWESOME.

Joe -- How do you define a 'local band'? If it's just a band from around where I live I could list bands like Nazareth, Micheal Buble, Nickleback, Gob, Dave Mathews Band, Bif Naked, Spirit of the West... at least, I'm pretty sure they're all from around my parts... if you're looking for little heard of local bands why do they need to be local? I have a lot of nearly unheard of bands that I love to listen to but none of them are from anywhere near me... Oh, one other question to help me narrow this down a little for you... What kind of music do you listen to? (examples as well as genres would be really helpful. Thank you).

savant- you know when you go to a show, and there are 2-3 (or 5-6, grrrr) locals opening? thats what i mean. bands that you actually see on a regular basis. i listen to a fuckton of lesser/unknown bands from all over (check my record crates...), so i dont want that-im interested because people that see a lot of live music tend to be more involved in their local scene, and i trust their opinions much, much more. also, i realized while reading through these that, for the most part, im not even looking for new bands for ME, but i am interested in people spreading the word on their localized scenes. i do like to get a look at what all of us are getting up to musically, as i am giant nerd for this stuff. its like small peeks into other cities/towns when done right. as far as my tastes, well: punk, hardcore, grind, powerviolence, emoviolence, acoustic, pop, keyboard driven synth weirdness, aggressive electronics, shit, last week i saw a polka band. i am very into the music scene, so my tastes almost dont matter.

and we continue!!!!!NOW!!!!!!!!!

Avoiding the obvious (65daysofstatic are technically a good local band, but they don't seem such close neighbours when they're globetrotting with The Cure...), there's plenty to be found in Leeds and Sheffield:

Corleone - Tense, brooding vocals mixed with a potent dose of sinister instrumental rock.

Slow Club - As appreciated by Mr. Ellis, if I'm not mistaken. Upbeat, albeit occasionally acerbic, witty acoustic pop duo. Boy-girl lyrical harmonies, idiosyncratic percussion and lovely people. Much fun. They're doing a residency at Enterprise in Camden at the moment, so Londoners should seize the opportunity to see them.

Nat Johnson - Monkey Swallows the Universe called it a day last winter, but Nat Johnson's peddling a similar vein of folk-pop on her own now.

I'd second the Rolo Tomassi recommendation - Trencher were mentioned earlier in the thread; Rolo Tomassi are in many respects similar to Trencher, except in that I actually find them listenable. Glitch-punk fronted by a petite teen girl making the kind of noises one more normally associates with enraged bears.

These Monsters - On record, lovely, nigh-ambient, jazz-influenced post-rock. Somehow this translates in live performances to a frenetic, pacy and altogether darker experience, but an equally enticing one.

Plenty more, but those will do for starters.

if youre from near casutic christ, there a TON of good bands that are still together or just recently broke up.

Yeah, they're from like 20 miles outside the Burgh here if I understand correctly. I saw them play once at a place down here called "The Roboto Project". It's just a little hole in the wall that literally only holds. like, 60 ppl that we occasionally get bands to play in for like $7 a pop. Usually it's just local acts, but sometimes we get some "names" down there. I saw None More Black play there two years ago. Great times.

 @ pete martin:

I'm right there with you about the singer/songwriters. I grew up on Jim Croce and similar things. I enjoy local punkrock, when they dont suck, but I also enjoy gettin out to see other varieties. I don't think I've seen a good singer/songwriter bit around where I live though(Portland, OR) Its mostly indie/punk/metal. Though my room mate who is in a band (http://www.theseditionists.com/) and was at a wednesday punk show, and for some reason they had a hippie-ish duet go on stage. They felt all embarrased and out of place at first but once they got to playin all the punks went in and started dancing according to the music style. Gotta tell you it was pretty funny to see about 12 blue mohawks and 20 studded jackets swaying to the rythym.
A classic rock style band that I saw at a bar around here (forgive the myspace address >.>) Royal Houser at http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=14827205 Who are phenomenal.

I kept meaning to add a post to this thread, but every time I tried, it fucked up somehow, probably due to my clumsiness.

White Ghost Shivers - Vaudeville classics and new jazzy goodness performed by former punk rockers and metalheads. Complete with slide-whistles, and a giant, 6'8" gent with a tiny banjo and/or ukelele. They sing songs about cocaine, ghosts, hookers, and love in the time of syphilis. They occasionally put on a punk show, doing all their songs with speedy drums, crunchy guitars, and plenty of screaming.

Shotgun Party - Three piece outfit that plays country jazz, and a kickin' happy hour every Wednesday in Austin. Highly recommended.

Buttercup - San Antonio-based pop group that has a cult following, and puts on some of the most interesting shows I've seen in a while. One show, they weren't even set up in the venue, and people were confused. They then let one person into the back room at a time, and played one song for each person. Cool stuff.

Goodnight Goddess - Formerly known as Slider. Fist-pumping arena rock, and a damn fine live show.

Skyblue 72 - Awesome rock outfit, with the hottest female drummer, who also happens to be the lead singer. That, and they're just some damn fine people.
