I was quite pleased with myself this morning. I woke up, checked all my other comics, and then checked Freakangels without prompting! Pavlov for the win!

The market and the protector/protect-ee relationship that Kirk and the other Freakangels have with the rest of the community makes me happy and squishy inside. Much like the rest of the brainchildren of Mister Ellis, I want this place to be real so I can live in it.

I'm curious, though, as to how an OD can mess up one's memory. Does that happen a lot and I never heard of it, or is it a problem that would solely affect the FreakAngels? It's probably a very commonplace answer and my brain needs more coffee to wake it up, but it needed to be asked.

I'm curious, though, as to how an OD can mess up one's memory.

Anything that causes unconsciousness can make a brain hypoxic (starved of oxygen) which can manifest itself as all kinds of brain damage. In addition there are drugs that will just 'break' your brain (e.g. Marijuana and schizophrenia or alcohol and no end of neurological deficits like seizures - alcohol being the most dangerous of these).

I've realised what it is that has been bugging me about the art (and this is no criticism), it's two things one almost definitely can be explained by the plot, the other probably can be explained.

1) The streets are really clean, unlike the real Whitechapel which is a huge shit-hole. But I'm guessing that the people living there are recycling *everything* and there are visual clues to this being the case.

2) The lack of ethnic minorities. Whitechapel has a huge number of Bangladeshi people living there, there are also other huge groups of immigrant, and 2nd/3rd generation immigrants. So much so I can go for days without picking up a 'White English' patient. I've not seen any evidence of this in the comic.

I know what it is, I'm too close to the area, so while it is set in Whitechapel, it's not set in the real Whitechapel, and that sets off little alarm bells in the reptile part of my brain. I'm loving the art and the story, but it's not *my* Whitechapel.

So its a problem with my brain, not the story or the art.

Which...erm... Isn't really news I suppose.

(Also it's never that sunny and the roads are much wider, the pavements aren't that flat and where is the homeless drunk on every corner and the trees aren't London Plane and the market is too small and the windows on the buildings aren't smashed and you are missing the specific graffiti on *that* building and.... )

Yeah, I got kind of a Delirium vibe from our new girl, too.

I love the leisurely pace the format allows for. Warren and Paul are really taking their time setting up the people and the environment, while still keeping things interesting. What's funny is, if, for instance, the last three episodes had been published as one 24 page comic selling for 2.99, I might have felt that not much really happened, besides characters talking (and, okay, knife to the throat). Yet here, I think it's great. It's fascinating how differently pacing works in this format.

Have we really been doing this for two months, now? Wow.

Man, I loved the pacing this week. The slow reveals really made it for me.

KK has holes in her socks. So much is revealed about her in that little detail.

Kirk looks so sad when he looks at Arkady in the last panel on page five.

And another vote for Delirium, which I absolutely adore. Especially the final panel.

This episode struck me as very sweet, and a little sad. Maybe I'm projecting onto it a little bit today, but that's what I got out of it. It, uh, touched me more personally than any of the previous episodes.

So far, Freakangels seems to be much more about the characters being presented than plot.

This is the first serial webcomic I've ever read. The few others I read are what you'd call comic strips. So this is format is odd to me. Not sure how I feel about it yet.

Dialog and art are both great so far.

Random notes on FA 0008:

Arkady is my new favorite character, I think. She is very, very cute and I love her to bits.

Love the Lambeth joke, especially since it came true. Nice callback.

Duffield is getting paid for this, yes? Lots and lots of money? Also much whiskey (or a drink of his choice)? Because it would be a shame if he wasn't, because this is some of the best art I've seen in comics. Any comics at all.

Love the slow burn pace of the series. It's a great example of a "hangout comic." Like, you stop by each week and just sorta hang out with the characters for a few pages, yet it doesn't feel aimless. Kinda Richard Linklater meets "The Midwich Cuckoos," but with more discipline than Linklater might bring to it. Nice, controlled four-panel grid pages. Would it be odd of me to say that this comic feels sunny? Yes? Fuck it, I will anyway.

This is my favorite Ellis since Fell. I love the slow pace, the large cast, and the sense of a world being built bit by bit. These characters live in a place that's alive, and where people matter beyond filling in the background. This makes me happy, and I can't wait to see more.

The art, of course, is almost literally stunning. I keep staring at the panels and forgetting to read. I guess "mesmerizing" is the proper word, then.

Does anyone else think that the boy from Lambeth Road isn't just a recurring joke but the introduction of a Major Plot Point? (See: he's one of the first things we're introduced to; KK discusses him with a bunch of other people; Arkady predicted him before he happened.)

Also, my impression of the FreakAngels previously had been that since they were all raised together, they related to each other as siblings. Did anyone else think that Arkady and Kirk . . . don't?

I am so glad I found this comic near the beginning. I love the art, and the characters are all so identifiable and individual. Also, as much as the pace feels kinda slow and easy, we've been introduced to a lot already -- we have some seven major characters and an overarching mythology and a major villain and a minion-who-might-turn-ally. I will be checking this comic every Friday after I wake up.

Anyhoo, back to the current episode. Beautiful work, again. The tidbits stuck between the lines make this series very enjoyable. What's really caught my attention this morning (which could be because I'm tired, cranky and my favorite dose of trimethylxanthine is NOT working) is the fact that everyone seems to like them all, despite the fact they caused the end of the world. Since it's only running 6 pages a week, is it safe to say we will see those characters that DON'T like them? Or have they been run out of Whitechapel?

I don't think Kirk and Bob were necessarily flirting as much as Kirk is just embarrassed to ask for handouts (even if he knows they'll be gladly offered). I have been in that situation before. My friend's girlfriend was a manager at a burger joint that my cow-orkers and I frequented. I didn't really know her all that well (just by association), but she told me to flag her down whenever I was there and she'd comp my lunch. I never quite got the hang of that though, and I went through a little "song and dance every time."

Or you could be right. Kirk does seem a bit effeminate and sensitive.

It's true that I don't use inks. I have 4 stages to the production.
First is the thumbnail, which are tiny little concepts scribbled next to the dialogue on the script itself.
Second are the roughs, which are done in 0.7 or 0.9 mechanical pencil at actual size (about 1.7 times bigger than print size).
Third are the neats, which are traced carefully over the rough onto new paper using a lightbox and a 0.5 mechanical pencil.
Finally I scan the neats into photoshop and darken the lines a little (no further drawing is done at this stage unless I'm correcting mistakes, I use multiplied duplicates of the original scanned layer and the curves tool to do this), composite the page and colour it.

Well, if my suspicions are correct, you can take the "12 strange children were born in England at exactly the same moment" quite literally. I don't think Warren Ellis is the kind of sadist who makes a woman give birth to two children at excactly the same moment. I mean, the man has a wife and mother to answer to.

I like Kirk more and more every time I read over his appearances.

Just in the way that he reacts to how the people in Whitechapel treat him, giving him food and what not, he feels like the most relatable character so far.

For me at least.

I love how Arkady's head seems to be connected to her neck like a birds instead of a human's. And Kirk's awkwardness around people is endearing. Clearly the boy doesn't get to talk to people much (Makes the fact that he has a teddy bear both super sweet and lonely).

What do you think of Issuu? I used it for my book and it's kind of neat - might be good for FA since the panels are quite big...so you don't need to zoom in like for Virtex.

Issuu (and all flash readers/book previewers) are great -- once the book is finished and done. What you can't do with a flash reader is push new pages to a RSS feed as you post them. There are, literally, thousands of people that subscribe to Freakangels via RSS. RSS also runs fun little gadgets like the RSS window, which, unlike an Issuu embeded viewer, auto-updates each time a new page goes live.

And, haha, jpgs make it a bit easier to make user icons of your favorite characters, you know...

Hi Ariana,

Good point on the updating...maybe you can combine each month of story into 1 book? 6 pages a week x 4 makes a nice 24 page book? Maybe its not supposed to be broken up like that - but just a thought - the constant refreshing of HTML is really quite a pain...I'm sure its a preference and ease of updating for you guys.

I'd promote FA by embedding the issue into my blog and postings I make online...good way to promote it...maybe.

Of course with that said the CBR people will complain too...good for another post topic methinks

Paul's right. The pages/month count on this project is identical to the familiar US monthly format. So those who prefer it that way miss nothing, while the rest of us get new pages more often.
