do you wonder why we couple? not like the mating thing, but the whole dating-moving-in-together-marriage-kid etc etc... do you?
well i did, and until recently, i believed the reason was romance, and of course, it's greatest distributer, (i am a bit fucked in the head) Hollywood. Hollywood, and it's kitchy catchy romentic\comedy movies that pop every other day. Hollywood, that try so hard to make us find some interest in it's denizens so-called love life. if you can believe, and you can, some poeple actually think that their love life should look like the star's, on the screen or on the tabloids. This of course leads to trouble, becouse you can't live real life like it was a movie, and if you try... Hollywood is no place for real poeple.

i was so depressed by the fact that my reaction to a girl on a date is based on some cliche an asshole in a toxido said to some paper character of a girl in some stupid movie, that i decided that my goal in life was to destroy every aspect of the concept romance as we know it.

but, recently, some good things started to happend (no, you twads, i didn't get a love life) and i see that we are, inch by inch, escaping hollywood clutches.
i hear men and women all over are expiriencing true, genuine, down-to-earth and so damn hard to find love. and really, that gives me hope.

not all is good, and we still have a lot of work in front of us, so meanwhile, keep killing your local celebs, i know i will.
romance is dead, long live realty.

Don't want to sound like an arsehole here, but I hardly think that Hollywood is responsible for the love issues people experience.

I just assume love is just a chemical/hormonal state induced for the furthering and reproduction of the species... which is why it comes and goes. Divorce, adultery, lust, all that. It's just chemically-induced. I'm not saying it's bad, but it's a lot less complex than most people give it credit.

And I think familial love is similar, but for community survival rather than reproduction.

Based in science? Not entirely. But it wouldn't surprise me.

I think what Adam is trying to get at - and apologies if I'm putting words in your mouth Adam - is that Hollywood has filled the heads of a lot of people with 'romance' and 'one true love' and all that guff, so that the reality of love is ultimately disappointing.

That some people expect fireworks when the best they can hope for is comfort can lead to feelings of inadequacy.

Me - I haven't the foggiest, I've never experienced a 'romantic love' emotion.

Why am I reminded of the "5 Wise Blind Men and the Elephant?" Romantic love is best if it includes hot sweaty sex. And babies rock.

People said the same thing about books and all that back in the day, that's all I'm saying. Saying it's Hollywood's fault we're unhappy is like saying it's TV's or teh intarwebs'.

i'm not blaming the fucking american movies industry in the entire emotional state of the western colture. hollywood is, of course, a manifestation of our previous coltural flaws. but right now, it is the enemy, and it's one fucking big target.

and reynolds, yes, you know how to put it in words. you are here by declared my P.R. guy
    for eternity......

Reynolds, youve said it better than i could

and okay so hollywood does put some ideas into peoples heads, like games do with violence.
but lets be honest, if anyones dumb enough to be influenced by two actors falling for each other faster than a tonne of bricks in circumstances that make harry potter look realstic, surely they deserve a loveless life of dissappointment?

to be fair, romance makes me uncomfortable, give me practicle, steady love any day

    cold man, cold...
doesn't dumb poeple deserve the right to be loved as well????

"romance" is a joke, but romance in a real world way is fucking awesome. cooking for my lady? check. paying attention to her because i do actually love her, and care about things that affect her? check. buying toys that are really for me, but given to her because she gets just as excited about them as i do? check. i could go on and on and on. fake romantic shit that people do because "thats what youre supposed to do" is stupid. but i dont care because i am in fantastic nerd love. thats the best kind. plus shes got red hair and im bald so i feel like king mob, a fiction suit that has left the page and come to life. now what medium is to blame for influencing my brain, sucka?

This post reminds me of the one time where I almost let Becky Turner, the girl I had a crush on since 3rd grade get on a plane with Chip Blonsky, all-star quarterback and head off to Seattle to live their life together. I had a moment of doubt, but overcame it after hearing some wise words from a man, much like myself, but older. It hit me deep. And I knew I had to get her back.

So I drove as fast as I could to the airport. Peter Gabriel was playing on the radio, which was odd because it's normally broken.

I muscled and argued my way past security and made it to the departure gate just in time to pass on those same wise words to Becky and convince her I was the one. I also punched out Chip.

Today? I live in a 2-story suburban home with Becky and our 4 kids.
