Just a thread to heap abundant praise on the stores that welcome you in, take chances, and stand up for your right to read about robots killing zombies attacking amazons and whatnot.

In Vancouver I buy all my comics from RxComics on Main Street. I just happened to walk into this little store when I was starting to get into comics again (interestingly enough, I was looking for the trade of Planetary). The guys who run this store are exactly the way WE says comic store employees should be in Come In Alone. Suffice it to say I know next to nothing about comics, but they take the time to talk to me about what's new, try and hunt down what I want no matter how obscure, and generally treat me like their best customer.

When I simply can't wait to get back to the mainland I shop at Curious Comics. Big store, nice people.

The Comix Shoppe in Swansea (Wales) has always got my vote, as the owner's a sound guy, gives good advice and is friendly (and, as a female friend commented, treats her like a normal person - rather than the strange, alien creature some comic shop owners seem to see).

Unfortunately, there's a new shop assistant who has... not impressed me so much. More interested in reading his own comics than serving, he gives off a weird vibe, and I've taken to avoiding requesting my orders from him if possible (he clearly doesn't approve of my purchasing Castle Waiting, and I'd rather avoid the embarassment).

Um, this wasn't meant to be a negative post. The shop's still a good place to shop (not that there's much choice in Swansea, but I'd much rather shop here than in the Cardiff Forbidden Planet) - a little small, it houses a good selection of comics and the owner's always willing to dig for more obscure TP's/singles. Hopefully the new shop assistant will improve with age (or, y'know, change into somebody else...).

A brief plug for a store I'm geographically unable to frequent any longer, but if you live or work in Manhattan and are ever on or near the Upper East Side then do check out Gotham City Comics. If not for them I would not have much more than a vaguely passing interest in comics, and almost exclusively in Batman and Superman. They turned me on to Preacher, the Authority and so much more. Any time I'm able to head up to the city (once a year) I make a point of buying my week's stuff with them. Small shops need love and I can't rave enough about them. If you yourself know the shop, tell Johnny and Bernie that John "Travis Bickle" Smith said hello.

Here's their review from CitySearch which sums up exactly what I would say about them:

i have been buying comics since i was 8, going to comic specialty shops since i was fifteen and gotham is the only place where the staff asked my name and remembered from week to week. i went there initially because it was convenient and continued because of their subscription service and because i like i shop where the customers want to hang-out and discuss the randomness of their interests. despite the size, the selection is pretty good, and things can be ordered. the only real downside is the lack of comfortable seating for hanging out.

Pros: subscription service, helpful/goofy staff, beer sold nearby

Cons: the size

When I'm at college in Boston, my favorite shop is Comicopia. It's pretty much perfect in every way, and the manager is named Shannon Outlaw (f'real).

I'm spending this year in London, and since my pull list is being filled back home, I'm not really buying many comics while I'm over here (except 2000AD, which I usually just pick up at the WH Smith at the Tube station I take to get to campus). But I occasionally drop by some of the shops round Tottenham Court Road, namely Orbital and Gosh Comics, both of which are pretty great. Forbidden Planet I use more as a museum of Doctor Who merch, although I did once buy a hardcover From Hell because it was 5 quid off and I was meeting Alan Moore the next week.

In some ways we're a slightly backwards state, the only one of these ways that actually affects me is that for some reason our comic shop owners still think that the Aussie dollar is worth about half a US Dollar, so they double the US prices on all the stock in their store.

The Aussie dollar has actually been at around 87-92 US cents for a long while now, so generally it's cheaper for me to order a few books off Amazon and get them shipped out here.

But when I want to order single issues (that's right, I'm getting to the point here) I order from a store in Sydney, King's Comics. They've got a great range, their prices are reasonable, and the staff is friendly and helpful (that's from my experience with the person that runs the online side of the store, I've got no idea what the in-store staff are like because I live about 1000kms away...).

So yeah, until any of the comics stores in South East Queensland up their game I'm more than happy to shop at Kings.

In fact I've been buying comics from incarnations of them both since I was 12 years old and they had shops in Dinkytown. I'll be 30 next year.

There is also Big Brain in Downtown Mpls., which is great in a lot of ways, but what bugs me about them is they no longer have a "new this week" rack or even a list up, only "NEW" tabs amongst their collection, so I always miss something I would have bought otherwise.

Midway Books in Saint Paul is all right too, but again its not easy to find what you're looking for.

RIP Shinders, but they were never the best anyway.
Million Year Picnic. Best service, friendliest staff.

I must respectfully disagree with that. I've had some pretty negative experiences with the staff there. Nothing blatant, just given some unfriendly looks, spoken to in annoyed tones. The first time I thought it was my imagination, the second time I began to wonder about it, if they just thought I was a n00b or because I'm female. But then the third time it was a Scott McCloud signing, so they couldn't have thought I was n00b. And then my boyfriend told me he'd had similar experiences, so it couldn't have because I'm female. Although (and this might explain things) my boyfriend said that it was always the same guy with him. I never really noticed who it was, but it might have been the same guy with me. And to be fair, I've had just as many neutral-to-good experiences there, but it happened often enough that I stopped going there whenever I meander around Harvard Square. It just really frustrates me, because everyone else besides my boyfriend seems to love it as much as you do, and I really want to know why I haven't been so lucky :(

 @ Flabyo:

I was down in Guildford last month and was going to visit that odd shed-like comic shop but it was closed. Might try again when I'm there in a week or so. Maybe they'll be open this time...

If I end up moving down there it could be my local one, so I want a good poke around in there. To be honest I'm tempted to just go 'mail order' with Page 45 if I move down there, as it stands I have to buy a £6.30 train ticket to get my comics so £5 postage wouldn't be an issue. Or maybe I'll use Gosh in London.

Moving comic shops might be the most traumatic thing about the move down south if I make it...

Another Twin Cities dweller here, Big Brain is my preferred stop, though Dreamhaven is a close second.

In the 4+ years I've lived in the Cities, I've been to the Source exactly once... for gaming. Doesn't seem like a bad place, and everyone else seems to love it, but to me it felt more like a shop that has comics in it than a comics shop. I suppose I could give it another shot as my new apartment makes things a bit more reasonable for getting there, but then Midway Comics says "Hey, look at me, I'm right on the way!"

Meanwhile, Big Brain is nothing but comics(and comics paraphenalia) catering to all my needs. I don't mind digging the racks for the new stuff either, as I'm never a fast shopper anyhow, and it gives me time to listen to their great indie/punk background music(and with winter here, thaw).

And Dreamhaven? Dreamhaven is sort of what my dream library would look like, except that I have to pay for what I want out of it. A decent amount of comics space for both capes and indie, but both dwarfed by a massive selection of sci-fi/fantasy/pulp literature and goodies. They'll typically get the nod for the week's run if I've got a book or two that I'm looking for as well, which usually ends up being every 3rd or 4th week.

It's a shame Shinders imploded(hooray for meth! :|), even though I'd been bypassing it for Big Brain/Dreamhaven for a while(due to poorer selection), it was still nice to be able to walk a few blocks to get a comics fix.

One week I knew a new issue of Fell was out, but couldn't find it in the store. I asked one of the guys about it, and he found it behind the counter. I frequent several shops, depending on what kind of comics I want to buy. Since there is no comic shop in my city, I have to go a certain distance for them, though.

For German-language comics and mangas: Kult Comics in Wuppertal [DE] (~15km). I go there often, since I also work in that city. Friendly staff and good manga selection, but they're not really doing US-imports.

For English-language comic imports: Nic's Comics in Düsseldorf [DE] (~30km). They have my pull-box and preorders and get bi-weekly shipments. They're not the cheapest shop around but they're reliable and close.

For Previews catalogue: Alcatraz Comics in Cologne [DE] (~40km). They usually get Previews faster and cheaper.

For French-language comics (BDs) and mangas: several shops in Liège [BE] (~160km), Brussels [BE] (~250km) or Lille [FR] (~350km), like BDScope, Bulle d'Or, Brüsel, Dragon Toys, Le Depot, BD Liège, Marque Jaune, BD Fugue, Folle Image etc. Shopping trips once every 2-3 months.

English-language mangas and TPBs with ISBN I only order online (it's much cheaper).
Japanese-language mangas I also buy online (or used at an Asian Supermarket in Düsseldorf).

I'm glad there's lots of love for Page45. It's the best comic shop I've ever been in, and living in Derby I don't have far to go to get to it.

I went in yesterday and brought a huge pile o'books.
