So I'm in the midst of re-watching the first two seasons in order to finally start the third (we do not pay for cable and as such we see everything later than many... just finished watching Sopranos start to finish. Between Sara's work schedule and my own that took a while.. fucking brilliant though). Hip deep in it I am so enthralled with the characters, especially Swearengen. Unfortunately I just read something on line that the movie HBO promised to tie up the loose ends after cancelling it a season early is now KA-PUT. Fuck!!! Why do I always fall in love with shows that end early (starting with Twin Peaks which I swear cursed me for al time). This is probably old news (correction: definitely old news) but are there any other fans out there that know any more about the status?

Anyone have any thoughts, comments or general blither-blather about this epic show?

The show's not coming back any time soon. David Milch promised a couple of movies but when HBO commissioned his nonsensical Surfing Jesus show, John From Cincinnati, he appeared to lose interest. That show got cancelled after one season, and next he's doing some cop show or other. I can't be bothered to find out the name of that, because it isn't fucking Deadwood, so who cares? At least it won't feature Rebecca DeMornay screaming all her lines like in JFC. I hope.

Granted, it's hard to get the Deadwood cast back, what with Timothy Olyphant making mega-blockbuster super-successes like the Hitman movie, and the rest of the townsfolk spread to the Four Winds like so much talented chaff, but it would be so sweet if HBO made the effort.

I agree it was fantastic, though season 3 started to falter a lot with not much really happening, none of those "fuck yes" moments at the end of episodes, but it definitely felt like it was going somewhere. Shame it'll never reach.

At the very least, I hope it's propelling Ian McShane into more film and television because he is just... just goddamn great.

I think DEADWOOD, on the whole, is possibly the best tv series yet produced in America. I'd rate it over THE SOPRANOS.

It stumbles in the third season -- you can pretty much spot the point where a fourth season was yanked away from them, and there's a lot of vamping to cover the damage that did to the structure -- but there are still some transcendent moments in there.

It's my understanding that Milch is simply no longer interested in creating the planned two telefilms. The cancellation of JOHN FROM CINCINATTI (the Magic Retard is Jesus' son and all surfers are knobends -- there, no need to watch it now) seems to have shaken Milch, and he's made some odd proclamations about DEADWOOD since, such as asserting that the show would still be on the air if he'd been able to get Ed O'Neil to play Al Swearengen.

The sixth episode features a scene with Surfing Jesus delivering his new Sermon in a parking lot while the rest of the cast stands around. It made no sense. NO SENSE! None whatsoever. But it was riveting. I thought the show had turned a corner, going from pointlessly alienating to alienating but potentially fascinating, and looked forward to the next four episodes. And yet I ended up not watching them, because one more second of DeMornay's screeching and Brian Van Holt's inability to swear with any conviction (difficult to get around when every other word out of his fat head was "motherfucker") would have broken my brain. Here's the awesome/dreadful/insired/pretentious scene in question.

In a Salon talkback, Jim Beaver discussed the cancellation of Deadwood:

"Deadwood," they told me, cost six million an episode, not one million -- far beyond the typical cost of a series episode as I understand it. And David Milch, however the decision came to be made, was to my eyes both devastated and livid that HBO chose not to continue "Deadwood." Certainly it's quite common for a producer to create a new show while he has a hit running. It happens all the time. And the first script for what became "John From Cincinnati" was written in 2002, before "Deadwood's" first episode had even been filmed.

Scroll down for information about the telefilms (quick recap: don't hold your breath).

There was even a whore named trixie. Swe Gen cashed out from deadwood very well off
lost all his money gambling ,drinking etc and died penniless hopping a train. Bullok became very powerful ,was a great friend to president Teddy
and I think he was senator or governor or something. Calamity Jane died of a disease (I think) and was definitly buried in the Deadwood cemetery.
If you want to find out about specific people their is a wikipedia site that has them all.

I hoped this was helpful.

It makes sense that the characters were so good because they acted like real people.

The filthy awful mayor (My other brother Dave) was actually well liked and respected.

Hi, I'm a noob, this is my first post.

Anyways, I'm fully on board with Deadwood. For me, it's easily the best piece of work I've seen on television. Milch is a genius, and has a compassion for character that's very, very rare. I agree the third season's maybe a little off, but I thought Hearst was incredibly fascinating. Clearly, somewhat of an homage to Milton's Lucifer, but how oddly driven toward commerce, to the point of killing those around him, and yet how conflicted he was about "crushing his own kind," is just so incredibly fascinating. "Agreeing upon its value, we organize to seek the color." It's like he sees gold as this great equalizer of men, and longs for it, and can't tolerate those who don't seem to understand, what to him, is the one Truth about gold: that it in some sense it can set men free.

Maybe this is irritating, but I could talk about this show for probably a year straight.

I watched John. I was okay with John... I mean... I've never seen Ed O'neil give a performance that ridiculously good. I can't exactly say how I feel about the show as a whole.

And, lastly, I like the Wire. I watch the Wire. But does anybody else ever get the feeling that sometimes it's just a bit heavy-handed. I get the sense the show's a little too impressed with itself, and occasionally crosses the line. And I miss Bodie. But I love Snoop.

Deadwood is the most brilliant TV show ever. No question. Far and away above any other show including all that Soprano's, Lost, Six Feet Under stuff.
The scripts are so incredibly rich. The language is almost shakespearean; How beautiful it is. "Pointin' yer finger at me in that tone'll git you tol' ta' fuck yerself."
The only other thing I can even closely compare it to is the work of William Shakespeare. The television medium has been officially conquered by David Milch.

Deadwood for me was the best show ever made. Not a single character that wasn't a blast to watch. The 1st episode of the second season and the penultimate episode of the third season were on par with 95% of any film made. When McShane got philosophizing it was poetry.

The only show that matched it was Rome. By the second season, particularly when James Purefoy got going, it was remarkable. The way they played Caesar's was hilarious and jaw droppingly amazing all at once.

As for John From Cincinnati, 2 1/2 episodes in I agree it was shit. On the other hand it is a show that really took patience. I gave up on it about 1 1/2 in. But I had a friend who brought me back to it, and I have rarely been so glad to be wrong. Given time and another season or two, it could have been one of the best shows ever. Definitely worthy of the HBO echelon.

There were a lot of reasons I cant stop watching Deadwood but mostly it was the flat, unpretentious brutality of the violence. Every beating stands out clear in my memory. Clearly the work of someone who has made a study of violence. I could watch Bullock lay into Farnham once a day for the rest of my life and never get bored. Watching that scene actually improves my mood.

I also loved how suddenly and strangely the show could be funny, not something I would normally expect.

My only real criticism of the show was that it started to fall apart at the end, mostly I think because of the way Hearst neutralized all the players until they just got tired of it. I love the beating Swearingen lays on the Pinkerton but I was disappointed by his sudden concern for Garette and Sophia. He stopped being Swearingen, the man who threatened to choke Trixie to death for defending herself, and became "crazy uncle Swearingen" who went off to the war and came back a bit funny.

It's funny, I finished the series shortly after starting this thread and was left in awe. I definitely see how some have said it wavered a bit in season 3 (but only in comparison to season 2), but really, there was enough that was GOOD to make it carry its own weight.

Now, weeks afterward the show still circles around in my head. We watched 3:10 to Yuma the other night and since I have had this feeling that all other modern westerns are going to seem like Western-lite compared to Deadwood, and I find myself wanting to re-watch it again already, even though there is so much else I want to get on with.

As for the ending of the series, which many people I know warned me left the viewer hanging painfully, I didn't think so. There was definitely room to continue (and damn I wish they did, although better to leave em' wanting more than to give em' too much) but I felt that it had more closure than say, Carnivale, which seems complete only if You pull a Twin Peaks fan rationale (which I am and I do) and more or less convince yourself that all the pieces for closure are there, they're just subtle and/or out of order.

All in all, Deadwood is amazing and something I recommend to everybody.

I love the little nod to Deadwood in season four of The Wire when Cutty is in the hospital and the guy in the bed next to him is watching the show and says, "Ha ha, he said cocksucker." That killed me.

So my friend just told he that the actor who plays Ellsworth is a friend of her father's. I don't doubt it because her father seems to know a lot of people. I've seen him sitting down at NYCC chatting it up with Brian Brian Bolland who also recognized my friend on sight.

That is just awesome.

I think that the problem with the final season of Deadwood is that it's all building up to a final, epic showdown that never happens. Though the final line (I won't spoil it for people who haven't finished the show yet) is fantastic.

I don't understand why Milch wouldn't want to complete the story through the movies. It may not be his fault, and it could be a complicated situation, but still.

It does remind me of Twin Peaks, but the thing about Lynch is that he completed that story in other stories(if that makes sense).
