Inspired by our host, Sr Ellis's very own Doktor Sleepless.

I suppose you could also call this the Where In The Sweet South Bronx F*ck Is My Flying Car And Robot Servant Named Rosie post.

What future did you want by now? What future do you want in the coming times?

This is not the clairvoyance post.

We do not need your predictions.

    It is a desire+imagination post.

What do you want the future to look like?

Is it a post-ethnic kumbaya nano-topia that more resembles Second Life?

Anarchic sweatlands where you roam the countryside with nought but your trusty machete, slaying mad, mutant koalas for sustenance and delightfully sweet brain juices?

Is it a vast lush sexgarden where South Dakota used to be, watching brainless fuckbeasts swagger about in bovine submission?

More like our host's title, Transmetropolitan?

More like M Night Shyamalan's The Village?

Tell us what future you want most.

As long as I have a house, food, transport, and enough tech and chem trickling in to keep me from rebelling, I'm cool.

By now I was expecting an indescribably change. This is partly a lie: most of my formative teenage years were spent in the run-up to Millenium, so I guess most of my expectations for NOW were that all would be done...and maybe I wouldn't have to do my damn A Levels after all. And yet I worked my ass off in a mind-control factory to mak sure I passed and pleased my mother nonetheless. When the Apocalypse didn't happen, I actually felt let down.

Post-Non-Apocalyptic fantasies of now involved some CHANGE. I don't know what exactly, but a profound change where things seemed alright. Or maybe just crazy, as after wasting my childhood drumming into my brain just enough math and english to get by, I have decided to have my childhood now.

My hopes for the future? How I would like to see it?

In my wild fantasies, people will be allowed to self-modify using genetic and cybernetic methods, essentially differentiating the populace into castes of those genetically enhanced to be practically supersoldiers of post-post-modern life, or cybernetically enhanced to drench themselves in information and exist everywhere, simultaneously in the NOW and the THEN. Much of me would like these drastic changes by, or after, 2012.

The old Armageddon craver in me hopes 2012 means cataclysm.

Can you tell I just finished The Invisibles again today? (Actually, fair point, that would be a cool future too)

The future I want involves small, highly versatile gadgets. Like the little foldaway computer Yelena uses in Transmet after Spider's downed in the bar during the ruinstorm.

Juast as long as it's not Max Brooks' future from World War Z I'm cool.

I want a future where everyone's home is on the powergrid, using a combination of solar, wind, fuelcell and the like.

I want a future where public transportation kicks ass, where there's plenty of paths for walking and biking and cars are given a serious backseat to importance.

I want a future where people realize that acting locally really does make a big difference.

Those probably would be the biggest things.

That would be the kind of drastic change I would like to see. Something as much in the publics psyche as in physical realities.

I'd like human nature and intelligence to develop a little faster since technology's picking up so much speed. I'd like us to be worthy of our world.

This is something I was bitching about today in relation to flying. How come it still takes me half a day to a day to get to the other side of the world, often on cramped, explosive death-traps with barely breathable air?

Also, why are my cities still crowded with shitty, polluting, overly expensive buses? Why am I still getting on trains from the 70s that run through broken points on poorly kept track?

Surely there's a huge economic and structural imperative to developing and improving how a population moves about?

My thoughts exactly. I'm truly tired of the 'lowest price' being the thing that's most important in this society...

A greener, sustainable future would be very nice. Not crunchy "Try the soy veal, it's just as good as the meat that died of loneliness" nonsense. I want cleaner technologies, alternatives to fossil fuels that don't explode or cost as much as a small home. I want houses built in tune with environment. Again, no crystals and shakras here. Use local stone and timber where possible. Use systems like the Hydronic Radiant system to heat and cool. HR uses the heat of the earth, moved through liquid in pipes to warm the floor and walls. Heat rises, you use less fuel to warm your space. I want green roofs on every building. A green roof can lower heating costs and reduce urban temperatures by a number of degrees come summer. I want solar panels on EVERYTHING. I want more efficient solar batteries so we're getting every fucking drop of juice that star is kicking out. I want deserts and desolation turned into solar and wind farms. I want gymnasiums to tap into the pedal power of exercise freaks as an energy source. I wonder how much energy a "spin" class is putting out on those little bike-things?

I want a future where there is NY-Style Mass Transit in Southern California.
I want a future where people actually give a glass of shit about their health.
I want a future where the nightly news isn't competing for ratings.
I want a future where medical cures are sought over treatments.

Basically, I'd rather humanity get it's priorities straightened out before we start dabbling with jetpacks, blended reality or civilian space travel. I love technology. Just not when it's in the hands of idiots.

I want simple clean Japanese style Mass Transit Transportation here in SoCal done better. I want the Mach 5 Disneyland Monorails as elevated trains to go everywhere in the city. I want speedy MagLev Bullet Trains for city to city trips.

I want to see eco-friendly city planning. I want artificial islands that serve as free range tuna ranches to reduce pressures upon endangered sealife. I want to see kelp farms. Artificial reefs that serve fish and surfer both.

I want a house for my daughter like the one I grew up in.

Ahhh, the Monorail. Every time i drive up the 5 Freeway, I envision two of them riding along the shoulders with myself waving back from one of the windows.

And I've always found it ironic how Tomorrowland smells like burning shit thanks to the Chevron sponsored "Autotopia" with their out dated lawn mowers posing as cars.

Crap, I seem like a selfish twit now. I want the ability to teleport anywhere I want, and the ability to download information into my brain. Mostly languages. I'm tired of having friends on the other side of the planet and not being able to visit them in person. I'm tired of missing places and being tied down to one location. Completely selfish, but there it is.

Yeah, the good transportation, good fuel, etc, would be awesome as well.

i want a smart house that keeps bastards off my phone and away from my door and that has an auxiliary persona installed in the car so it can drive me home when i've had too much beer.

    and that's to begin with.

One where we stop competing in order to succeed and start working together in order to truly thrive

I want people to realise that religion is a crock of shit.
I want people to realise that the next tribe over is just as human as themselves.
I want people to realise that you have one life and that once it's gone it's gone.
I want people to realise that human life is precious and that the person you keep down might be the one to cure you of that horrible disease you die of in the future.

Yeah, I'm off to smoke a clove cigarette now, then dance naked under a full moon.

(Seriously though, the 'next big thing' should be an alteration in how people think, technology can only do so much, its only by reworking the way that we think that real progress will be made).

    I want the goddamned Replicator.

I want people to stop thinking in terms of the TV rating model.
I want people to let love, compassion and kindness guide their actions before fear, anger and hate.
I want people to want to be happy, and actively seek it out,
I want to be able to get around in something like a car with less pollution. I thought Hydrogen Fuel Cell tech was market ready in 2002?
I want people to think about how every one of their actions (EVERY ONE) is shaping the future itself, and understand that no one's going to do it for them.
