    A topic close to my heart, as I'm slowly trying to "learn me some game development stuffs". What's your favorite arcade game (of all time?)? :)

    Hmm, I'm not really much for the super-old-school arcade games, but I think my favourite arcade game would have to be Metal Slug. Doesn't matter which one, and the good thing is that most arcades have at least one of them.

    While arcade games grew up with me. I never felt coordinated or savvy at the old school games of my childhood. It was not until my late teen and college years that a video game grabbed me so totally that I would waste huge sums of money on it.

    That game was Mortal Kombat.

    The Simpsons Game was pretty awesome. I also liked anything that had one of those light gun things.

    I never played SmashTV back in the day, but having a bash at it on XBL Arcade was a whole lotta fun.

    I'm with Corey Waits, I love me some Metal Slug. It took me a long time to finally beat it.

    There is this other Japanese game that was truly awesome (which you can't find anymore) called Lucky & Wild. The cabinet had a seat for two, light guns, and a steering wheel. You play two cops going on awesome car chases. The design and humor is just as fun as Metal Slug. It has to be the best co-op ever.

    Because I have no sense of pride and flailing my limbs about whilst a tinny screeching voice bellows "Hey Mr Wonderful Oh You're So Incredible Hey Mr Wonderful Wonderful To ME!" is my idea of a Saturday afternoon in public well spent.

    Zombinoid - FUCK YEAH!

    I played that a couple of times with my dad way back in the day (when I was young enough to play games with my dad and not be embarrassed, so that must've been ages ago). That game was great. Glad you mentioned it, 'cause I wouldn't have remembered it without some prompting.

    Yie ar Kung Fu has to be my favorite. I remember getting so excited when I got past that nunchaku fucker for the first time.

    After that, the original Golden Axe or Bad Dudes would be second and third choices.

    Lode Runner, Lode Runner II, Lode Runner III, and (drumroll...) Lode Runner IV.
    Virtua Fighters are good time killers before a show. Really all the classic fighting stuff. Mortal Kombat yadda yadda.
    But I'm a pinball man at heart. And I love shooting shit. Especially something like the Terminator 2 game, Jurrasic Park 2, House of the Dead yadda yadda. In the Victoria Airport there's a game called 'Desert Storm' or something that's pretty fun if you're into shooting Arabs. I'm not even into shooting Arabs, and I have a blast (pun intended). It's graphic, too!
    For some reason I love playing the horrible 1989 Die Hard game. And I'd be insane not to mention Turtles IV: Turtles in Time.

    Anyone else remember Sunset Riders? That's my number 1 all time favorite. Ever.

    I'd say that, if you can play it on the original cabinet with spinner, Tempest is the best arcade game ever. The action is amazing, the control utterly perfect, and you just can't go wrong with vector graphics. If you expand the definition to include arcade-like games, then Llamasoft's Gridrunner++ takes the all-time greatest prize without breaking a sweat.

    This is really going to shake out the generational divides!

    My classic favorites are Mr. Do!, Mappy, Spy Hunter (especially if it's a sit-down one), Star Wars (especially if it's a sit-down one) and Robotron.

    Can we say pinball machines, too? Comet, Creature from the Black Lagoon and Twilight Zone.

    If you're into reminiscing about classic video games, you may enjoy a column I used to write for the AV Club called The Games of Our Lives where I reviewed and remembered some of the lesser known arcade and console classics.

    I know I've played a lot of pinball, but I never really paid attention to what. It was just pinball.

    There's no such thing as "just pinball", but that's a separate thread entirely. Persuading that bastard ball to do what you tell it is an art, and there's a tactile feedback you just can't get from video gaming. Especially when the table is freshly tuned and the flippers and bumpers have real snap to them.

    We don't have that much of an arcade culture here in Finland, but I do remember Missile Command and a pile of coins.
