Highly refined discourse I see.

Unless "Manic Street Preachers" is the welsh spelling of "Nickelback", I'm afraid you are completely wrong.

Drive-By Truckers are/is he best band ever-- complete metaphysical certitude. They are nothing like the jam. Two different styles for a start. Jam=mod's, Manics=rockers.

He didn't carve his name into his arm, he wrote "4REAL" after the bands credibility was questioned. I don't think Richies actions reflected the entire band anyway.

I relate to them coz they arent afraid to speak thier minds. They will often be the first to question themselves then go through a reinvention. They write songs and music for themselves and the fans not for critics, otherbands and record labels.

The Holy Bible is a greatest reinvention after a weak 2nd album. It showcases thought provoking lyrics, puts out thier political opinion and is packed with excellent guitar riffs and banging drums.

Looks like you need some moral support here. So I'll go for "best and most important British band of the 90s."

Evidence for the prosecution:

Motorcycle Emptiness - a glorious pop classic that raises teenage angst to an art form and always leaves me dizzy.

The Holy Bible - a truly terrifying record, a deep pit of nihilism and loathing that showed an ambition way beyond any of their peers. Played it hundreds of times and it smacks me in the head every time.

What more do you want from a band? Angry, pretty, insanely opininated, fiercely intelligent, never afraid to make fall flat on their faces, a towering ambition, a dreadful hunger.

they were good to a point - once they started playing nothing but Arena gigs it all got a bit silly...
I saw them a good few times in the early to mid 90's and they were a decent bunch of blokes, very open to meeting the fans and general banter etc but things change and life moves on...
First 3 albums were a bit of a rollercoaster, after that it all began to get a bit flat - all mid-tones and not much light and shade.

Getting hammered with JDB at a secret Therapy? gig in Manc in '95 was interesting, though! So I read Phonogram, bought Generation Terrorists, put it on an actual walkman the way God intended...

And I couldn't understand a word the singer was saying. @ wellsy - what muse hick said..... they're a typical example of a band that conforms! One thing that Richey certainly did provide was their angst drive...

looking back, though - if i'd listened to certain bands back in the early 90's that I got into much later (like the Pixies, for example) then I really don't think the Manics would've had as much of an influence on me... all the Manics did was make me more blinkered, to be honest.....

 ok.
seems a lot of brits are hating on MSP.that's fine and understandable. a few of the brit musicians i know have cited enjoying bands from the us that i think are abject garbage.

as far as the manics go,they never had any play in the states at all...at least not where i lived.

i listened to "Holy Bible" for the first time about 8 years ago and i thought it was a fantastic album. I'm not going to tear apart at the seams about them or anything, but i think it's certainly a terrific album that deserved more media attention. i know you brits probably had this shit crammed down your curry-holes for way too long, but as an outsider looking in, i truly think it's worthwhile. i don't listen to it all the time, nor did i when i first heard it but..jeez. good stuff. (i'm not a fan of any of their other albums, btw)

seriously though..whoever said drive by truckers is the best band ever has serious fucking problems. listen to early bruce springsteen and you'll get the same sort of blue collar redneck shit only with good lyrics...at least he wrote white trash songs that had some sort of substance.

whoever said they sound like the jam....the jam is one of my fave bands ever. i really don't hear the likeness at all. compare some songs, perhaps?

i guess what i mean to say is...
holy bible is pretty awesome and i enjoyed it. everything after and before was just so-so and if you don't like my opinion, i guess you could go listen to your own shitty music and continue arguing over albums the rest of us (except wellsy) got over years ago :D

Whilst I appreciate that Wellsy has slightly opened himself up for ridicule here, moreso with his third post that his first (lovely grammar there, sir), I'm not sure that he quite deserves the ire that he's received...
Can we please all remember that music is entirely subjective, and hey, at least the Manics had something to say, even if they were incredibly ham-fisted about it at times?
Personally I'll forgive them anything, after getting into a drunken conversation with James Bradfield and Andy Cairns (from Therapy?) at the Reading festival some ten years ago, which turned into one of the most hilarious nights of my life. I would tell more, but I was very, very dunk...

Hey, if everything is subjective, then hello sir i am speaking to you from my underskirt seven-dimensional toaster and anyway that basically gives us equally as much license to berate people for their musical taste as it does for them to get protectionist and elitist about it. That and it's a poor way to determine musical quality. I mean shit, you're contradicting yourself right there by making a value judgement about the band.

Point is, I love the early Manics, I really do.

Close it if you want but isn't music, forums, hell all culture there to divide and bring out everyones opinion. This isn't the 1st forum I've opened a
Manics thread on and as usual the responeses have split the memebers. Some people like early stuff, some people like current and some don't like them what so ever.

To DJ Dead Billy, So The Holy Bible was made in the 90s, so the band have grown up and so have I but thats no reason to stop liking them and thier music as you possibly suggested when you said I should 'Move on.'

One thing I hate is people who say they love a band buy the first album and buy the end of the week say the same band is shit.Isn't music something worth getting passionate about?

I loved the Manic's because of the track Faster. But by This is My Truth... all the intensity seemed to have evaporated. Everything Must Go played a huge part in my life at the time it came out... It seemed to soundtrack my every action, so I was pretty disappointed by This is My Truth... and to be honest nothing they've done since has really grabbed me, but Your Love Alone... was pretty good.

Its just another band that was relevant now just plugging away. They obvioulsy enjoy what they do, but I don't think they'll ever top Holy Bible.

Because of this thread I'm bouncing around my bedroom to Faster (I've already split red wine all over myself...)

@ Midweeker - sounds like we've had similar encounters with JDB and the bearded monster that is Andy Cairns!!

Personally, I think if they try a faux return to a "Holy Bible Style" then they'll get laughed back to Blackwood! It was "of the fecking moment!" They're now content, well off, middle aged gents - how the heck will that drive the angst of an album like "Holy Bible"?

But...

@ Scribe - they are talented... well, JDB and Sean are musically talented. When he gets going James is an amazing guitarist (marred over the past few years by arthritis, though, apparently). Richey was a good lyricist but i'm not too sure about Nicky, nowadays, especially after hearing their latest stuff...
