Welcome! If you already know Mr Middleton's work, please say, because I'm becoming more and more perplexed by the number of people who shrug their shoulders in a sort of 'Idunno' manner when I talk about him!

His work was some of the first to break me into american comics, and he is probably the living avatar of the great pencilling god.

"Here's hoping I'll see him around more."
Hopefully! He's been on a DC exclusive for a good while now, and they've been doing nothing but throwing him covers and giving him slightly obscure heroes to draw. I think he's working on something big that he can't talk about though.
One day I'm sure he's going to go back to work on his original, Sky Between Branches, and then I'll be a happy man!

I really, really, really love his art. I can't tell you how many times I've come up with a concept that I can only imagine him illustrating. It seems a little unfair that he's being used primarily on shit DC work right now, though I'm sure he's enjoying the money and attention it garners (which he deserves). I'm still impatiently awaiting The Sky Between Branches.

I was blown away when I picked up the #0 of Sky Between Branches, and ever since then on pretty much everything he does. His 'falling out' or whatever at Marvel, and the fact that he didn't finish up NYX was just a tragedy. In my eyes he captures the feeling of there actually being objects moving through space on the page in a phenomenally graceful, gorgeous way.

I think it's not really that surprising that people don't know who he is though. He needs a good, complete run on a book before he'll really stick in people's heads. And that cover work is all very gorgeous, but I can't help but feel he's being wasted.

Ahh, it's so great to hear (see?) other people saying the same sorts of things! ^_^ His work really does just have an indefinable 'presence'.

"Goo! I must see more of this. Anyone have any recommendations as to what I should look for?"

Hmm... well, check out NYX (published by marvel), although bear in mind that the last few issues weren't drawn by him, but another artist attempting (and failing) to emulate his art style.
Hit ebay for a copy of Sky Between Branches #0 (the only issue ever made) too. Other than that he did Superman/Shazam: First Thunder! for DC, which is a laugh and well done, but doesn't really showcase his work properly.

he's the one of the first people to successfully meld eastern facets of anime and manga with western traditions of character illustration. so many others fail and seem too intentional to cop a specific style. his drawings look effortless. the elasticity in a lot of his work reminds me of Istvan Banyai whose books everyone should buy. some of the overtly sexual poses and framing in the xbooks and dc stuff bothers me, but is totally appropriate for "american virgin." i'll shut up about that though, it might have been the editors pushing him? or maybe that's another thread: which came first: artists drawing the gratuitous superheroine crotch shots or the editors requesting them?

I'd love to buy more of Middleton's work - it's great stuff, but he hasn't really done much work during his DC exclusivity that I find worth the money. Too bad DC doesn't do more with him other than covers and a forgettable-sounding Shazam story. (was anyone really clamoring for the "first" meeting between superman and captain marvel, anyway?) I've got some of his covers in the American Virgin collections, but otherwise I think that's about it. I'd love to Vertigo tell him to just go crazy and see what he can come up with.
