So I went over and started poking at the ficlets site. It seems a good place to blow off steam at 1000 characters at a time, and I figured this was a place full of people who had steam to blow off in a literary sense.
I have done my duty. Better yet, I think I should do this every day. Artists warm up with sketch books. Writers should probably warm up, too. I did this by obsessing, by making the story exactly 1024 characters long.
Wil pointed me at Ficlets a few months ago and I've been sort of hooked ever since. I write one every Friday and think of it as something like going to the batting cages. Still, I worry that I'm bleeding off perfectly good writing energy when I do this. I get the feeling of having written something, which is the high I count on to keep me writing. Ficlets don't pay the bills, though, you know? The Ficleteer's Dilemma, I guess.
