Whiskey, generally. Beer tends to either make me sleepy or take my mind off writing (though if I've been drinking prior to writing and prop myself up with much coffee, it sometimes helps), but whiskey seems to get me in the right frame of mind, and is also efficient at getting me to the required level of drunkenness. I usually drink Jack Daniels, mainly by virtue of the fact that it's what I have around and I never get around to trying much other stuff. Never really tried wine and writing, as I usually only drink that at a meal or other such event.

 Martini.

Chill a glass with ice and water.

Take six parts gin (six measures normally, though a half dose works), Bombay Saphire's fine, recently got into Blackwoods (but really anything better than the gut rot that is Gordon's). 1 part dry Vermouth, Noilly Prat if you've got it but Martini extra dry works (less interesting but dryer). Pour both into a cocktail shaker, also full of ice, stir provokatively.

Chuck the ice and water from your now frosty glass and pour in the gin and vermouth. Serve with a twist of lemon if you're feeling fruity or, as I by far prefer, as many olives as I can fit in the glass (cocktail olives, pimento or chilli stuffed works too and make sure brine's involved, some bars actually wash the brine off the olive, which completely misses the point).

This is what I'll drink as I'm putting something to bed, last page or whatever, and I enjoy the ritual of making it as much as the salty, boozy nector itself.

I've just sank a couple while watching The Departed, I love everything.

I think I am with Spider on this one. Alcohol is not the least bit creative any more than huffing gas or glue. I don't really enjoy quality hallucinogens but feel sometimes they give you that change in perspective you need at certain times in your life. They should be treated with respect. Fasting for 24 hours and drinking lots of water is a good idea.

Now some good outdoor grown organic pot is great for helping ideas flow a bit better but the heavier indoor hydro can be to much of a good thing if you actually want to accomplish anything. I hate speed and coke but some people have had good results. I LOVE opiates but they absolutely KILLED my sex drive and are quite habit forming both physically and psychologically. Personally I don't understand why one harmful drug alcohol is good while other less harmful drugs like pot or even heroin are considered bad?
