    EDIT:

    UPDATED: IGN was contacted by Nu Image/Millennium Films who advised us that no deal is set yet for the rights or Miller, and that they are still mulling over director contenders.


    So I guess it's a wait-and-see sort of deal. Could be amusing.

    I rarely react that way, but the "self-referential meta lets make the movie a series of jokes about the old TV series" is a trend best left dead. Its satire based on weak nostalgia and a-historical memories of shows that worked in the context of time. Lets do this "straight" or rebuilt alla BSG please, if it is going to be done...

    Personally, I hate nostalgia. Look at Star Wars (not in the face, it burns) where you have legions of fans who loved it as kiddies and were all but murderous when the prequels failed to live up to those expectations. The reason they loved it as kids is because they were kids. You can't go back to being ten years old, though a good number of my generation dress like it, and accepting of any old crap that has shiny laserbeams.

    Remakes and refashions and respins are rehashes. Give us THE NEW.

    I'd appreciate one or two cheesiness in-jokes, but for the most part I'd want this to be Buck shooting things with lasers and generally being Han Solo.

    And killer robots. Menacing ones.

    Well, I think a line can be drawn between nostalgia and a retelling that reminds us of why ideas worked in the first place. In the spirit of where we are, for example, take the pulp foundations of Planetary or, better yet, the first Apparat comics. Both are based in the old but are quite far away from any sort of sickly colored nostalgia. Some genre ideas are classic - Sherlock Holmes, The Shadow, Superman and so on, and they can work again and again and still bring new visions and ideas each time.

    I think Buck Rodgers qualifies in such company, much like its fellows Flash Gordon and Dan Dare. The thing which seems awful here is this is going to be another one of those absurd "remember when the TV show did THIS!" joke movies. Maybe they can cast Ben Stiller.

    It'd be odd if that kind of movie came from Frank Miller though, usually his retellings and pointing out of what use to be of a comic book, gave us things like The Dark Knight Returns. Can we really say that a spoof, funny kind of story, like Starsky and Hutch, can be expected out of Frank Miller?

    I do not care much for Millers more recent work but...

    I actually think Miller could save this project from whatever doom the studio/producer folks have planned. Cause he would probably be one of the few people involved that realize this character existed 50 years before Gil Gerard and Erin Grey. He might inject a very badly needed retro pulp feel to it and erase the bad taste of 80's television and white jumpsuits.

    I have faith in you Frank, this time around.

    Frank Miller is not actually attached to the project. Most of the coverage is regurgitating an IGN piece which doesn't seem to be accurate.

    Well, had my doubts. Which leaves us with a Starksy and Hutch like pile of nonsense as the entire plan. Nothing more to say about that really.

    If true, and Miller does a straight-forward pulpy sci-fi thing, I'd probably see it in the theater.

    If Miller "Millerizes" it, and has Buck laughing like a crazy man in a trenchcoat screaming "EAT LAZERS, ROBOT PUNKS!" I would watch it several times, bringing friends and laugh our asses off.

    I'm not sure what that says about me.
