    The original proposal for a cheap computer for third world schools has been a bit of a bust - 600,000 units sold is nothing to sneer at but the target by now was 100 million.

    But the next version looks really interesting.

    First off, they're shooting for a price of $75 per unit - but then the current XO model's price blew out from $100 to $175.

    Anyway, the new machine reduces power consumption even further, replaces the key pad with touch screens and can be used in various innovative ways - as an e-book reader or with the dual touch screens being used by children to play games against each other.

    Originally there was talk of selling the XO in the developed world to offset some of the cost, I don;t know if that ever eventuated but I'd be tempted to pick up one of the new machines.
