and no-one else I know seems at all interested

Same boat here - mine pretty much has internet peeps attached to it at this point.

I got a few people I know using it for a while but now I am just tweeting away to no-one.

If it wasn't embedded into my blog and facebook page I wouldn't bother with it.

I use Twitter as an addition to my web site, for stuff I'm working on that isn't yet news-worthy. Until people started following that feed directly, I wasn't even really aware of that possibility. I still couldn't bring myself to follow others myself, though. It's just so much information!

i wish twitter would add photo and video, because i can't get anyone on board with me on zannel.com. i find it so much more useful than twitter, but nobody uses it. it's exactly the same, but you can send photo and video from your phone, and it shows up as a thumbnail in your feed.

    bah!

I think photo/video payloads on Twitter kind of defeats the point. It's supposed to be low-impact, low-bandwidth, almost ambient.

If friends of mine started using Zannel, I'd have to pare back the number of people I followed to the bare minumum just so's I'd be able to use my phone...!

yeah, good point. i'm going to try using twitter for text only, and zannel for photos, see how it goes.

i'm coming from a different perspective, since i only update from my phone. my phone and dataplan aren't robust enough to handle constant updates from twitter or email.

i forgot that other people have better phones than me.

twitter is handy for my facebook status.

Yeah, this seems to be the main part for my Twittering lately, too.

for Twitter i have three levels of Intimacy for those i follow:

SMS = my RL friends +a few (nothing like suddenly getting a review from Shavrio or some wisdom from "Jenny Holzer") + DMs + 'follow m1k3y' (so i get any/all replies)
RSS Feeds = SMS + online friends
Twitter apps = well, all i'm following obviously

-- RSS Feeds i actually mostly 'cause Twitter's been such an unreliable creature lately.. updates mightn't show up on the Timeline, been the user-feed's seem reliable

Twitter is excellent for FB status. FB DOES have a mobile option, but only in the US. Twitter however doesn't matter what country you live in. You can send that twitter from any mobile. With that app which automatically updates your status as well, it's pretty handy.

I didn't really "get" Twitter until I realized its potential as a mass txtmsg platform and that the 140 char. limit would force me to reduce situations essentially to their prime factors, which I think is a great exercise. There are moments that just click in my mind as they happen and Twitter is a fun way to record them, especially while away from a computer.

    Hyper-contemporary nano-nonfiction, or something.

I have noticed people that just happen to also follow Mr. Ellis following me as of late; I am guessing this site may have been the starting point.

I have decided to be less exclusive in who I follow as of late. It is interesting as the great void to see why people have added you and, even if they are spammers, to see how and what they are spamming. Anyone that may have added me from this site at least has one thing in common with me...

BTW, I love Twitter, but it is damned hard to be witty about your status all of the time, and difficult to get into the habit of being honest and consistent about what you are doing. Plus, most o fth time I could just say I am raping the proletariat, and how interesting is that statement?

@Spiral - are you saying Twitter's crossing over to "the mainstream"?

meanwhile, i too have 'SXSW envy'.. 90% of those I stalk are there and the other 10% are wishing they were.. /sigh

Have been wanting to use twitter properly for ages, but on the old phone was pointless. The new phone I have begun to integrate it into day to day.

Genuinely sounds great, but I'd be hesitant to get an account. Am I the only one who can't keep up with 20-odd different ways of getting in contact with other people? Does Twitter actually make getting hold of people easier, or does it require them to also have a Twitter account and use it all the time?
Next time I hear "what, don't you have an *insert social networking site here* account? I messaged everyone about it there!", I'm going to ram a pencil with my phone number on up said persons arse (which is bound to make them want to phone me, obviously). I'm all for the multi-media joys of the internet, but landline (which can now text), mobile, texting, email (at least 4 different accounts), skype, forums, facebook, deviantart, at least 3 different types of IM, and more that I've forgotten along the way is already far too much for me to reasonably keep tabs on. it really becomes an addiction (I had a housemate who would actually spend his every waking hour carrying his laptop around with msn on... it meant that he was always half-there and half-not... very odd).

    @Paul

I don't really see Twitter as a method to get a hold of people (it can of course, but its a secondary feature for me). I see it as a tool for eliminating distance.

You talk at your friends (or the public forum) as a group, and they talk at you. You can also follow people who are not your friends (I very much doubt Barack Obama's Twitter staffer cares what I have to say) if you desire.
On some level Twitter is getting all those people in the room with you, so they can say what is on their mind - what they are thinking or doing. Only, well, its a really big room that is everywhere at once. Some will want to make plans, others will talk about their day, and others will share random thoughts. That is whats so appealing about it, its a fairly intimate act of social connection across many miles with many different people.

If you look up thread, Ariana hit the many uses for it, but for me its about carrying your community with you.

Now, as a technical issue, you do need an account, but it runs through an existing IM or your Cell for notifications.

Ah, that sounds pretty cool :) Forgive my cynicism, but I waste so much time looking through all the networking sites that I'm a part of, I have to be very thoroughly convinced before joining another and becoming consumed by it.

Yep. Or at least headed in the that direction shortly. And sorry I'm not headed up to SXSW this year, to give you a more first person experience.

I use twitter as a snapshot of everyone's activities on my list, without having to go to ALL of my social points on the interwub. I'm more likely to check my twitter if that's all I have the time for.

i just signed up -- to twitter and just about every bloody networking site in existence -- a mad day of intent

am on twitter as musehick and am already following and being followed by a few people on here

quick question -- is there any particular etiquette on there? if you are following someone and they are following you is it rude to jump in on a conversation if you have something to add. and can you reply to someone who isn't following you?
