A sad end for a great man... thanks for the Harry Lime link.

I recently dreamt that Citizen Kane was, if not strictly outlawed, then suppressed on a nearly global scale because it was the central metaphor of some Opposition Party. People were adding new scenes to it, or reediting it, and dozens of politicized variants could be seen if you knew where to look. In the dream I stowed away on a Transpacific Dirigible to catch a rare 16mm screening of the original, complete film - somewhere in a dockside minimall in South Korea. The projectionist looked like a young Welles.

I am looking at this thread with whisky in my brain and I am wondering: where are there people who don't love Orson Welles, and how best can I stab them?

those who do not love him are best dealt with by administering daily injections of pork.

now imagine that in the Welles voice. "Daily injections... of pork."

When the "first" Star Wars movie came out, I speculated that Orson Welles was the perfect actor to eventually portray the Emperor. Someone who could capture the pure scale (and I don't just mean because he was a large man) of a galactic empire. Obviously that didn't happen, but it would have been grand.

@roque - And he could have taught Lucas a few thousand things about filmmaking in the process. (And even if it was the last thing Welles did, it would have beaten the crap out of providing the voice for a Transformers character)
