From what I've read, English pop is in a state of shit. Bands like The Ting Tings are making hits when any other time they would be overlooked due to their mediocrity. Indie Rock has given way to bleepy bloopy half dance that most people seem to despise.
It's ok music, it has a beat and is quirky enough to pleasure my ear. Maybe I'm just an American cretin with no taste whatsoever, but I'm digging the new sound of mediocre.
I'm always happy to see another new wave resurgence.
joe.distort and I would probably get along just fine, based on previous music discussions, so he probably shouldn't read the rest of this post.
That said, I haven't been able to get enough of female-fronted English pop bands since Elastica, Sleeper, Republica, etc. There's probably something wrong with me.
Current guilty English pleasures:
Kate Nash The WombatsThese guys have to have the dumbest record contract ever. The only way to get their full length in the US is to have a CD mailed. They're on iTunes. It blows my mind. You'd think it was harder to move bits across the Atlantic than atoms.
I'm also OK with the Futureheads and went through a phase where I listened to Blur a lot. If I wanted to get really embarrassing, I'd talk about all the French pop I've been listening to and I don't even know French.
I am totally kinda completely obsessed with Los Campesinos at the moment. Possibly because I played the glockenspiel in grade school, I dunno. Kate Nash has her moments.
I liked Art Brut's first album, still swear by Emily Kane as being really really great, but the second album didn't leap out at me.
i actually pulled out an old elastica 10" for stutter because of this thread...
the tranzmitors are canadians, but they may pull off being from 1976 england enough to make you think of the buzzcocks. maybe i just drink too much, though!
Call me when they think of a second joke. Granted, they do kind of overplay the "faux-pretentious idiot lout" angle, but that doesn't mean they don't have good riffs and aren't fun to sing along to.
Oh, and they do have a second joke: Eddie Argos' sex life.
Heh, I just DLed iTunes' free weekly single...which was The Wombats. Spent most of the morning trying to remember where I'd heard the name; came here and realized the free single and that vid are the same song.
I know I'm getting old and dull, because I'm listening to all this new stuff coming out of my country and just hating it.
Especially the Foals. I hate the weak vocals, and the Teardrops Explode style horns. I'm in a Britpop circa '93-'97 phase due to Gillen's 'Phonogram' and loving every minute of pretending I'm 18 again.
I want to murder 'Scouting for Girls' and 'The Pigeon Detectives'.
I know this thread is trying show some good stuff, and Hotchip are pretty good, but I'm pretty bored with everything I'm hearing. Um, I'd better stop before I start getting out of line...
