I love the idea, but the $20.00 price for one is just too high. The beauty about mix tapes was that you could make as many as you want (for lover(s), a bunch for friends etc.). If they were the actual price of cassette tapes, I would buy them in a flash.

I bet you still wash your clothes in a stream, too.

i dont own clothes. they are not how nature intended.

but seriously, i am not against things moving forward except when they come to music formats. new stuff is cool, i just love the aesthetics and care that goes into older stuff.
i know im a bit of a curmudgeonly grumpy young man when it comes to this, and i am ok with that.

But wait, Joe -- what if you had to stick a piece of tape over a hole in the USB key to get it to record...?

hahaha, that would equalize the whole thing.....good call.

edit: this would have been cool to know a few weeks back, as i just got a new usb drive and this is way cooler than just a plain normal one.

I'm all for music tech advances, but this really isn't one. I mean, I can drop 5% of that kind of cash on a blank CD, get another 10 minutes on there, and give the person the ability to listen to it in their car. The packaging is really cute, but I'd be considerably more impressed if they could just hook up a flash drive or memory card to fit in and play through the tape. Actually, somebody here should make money off of that idea.

Edit, I fail at checking Ariana's links.

    1Gb 2Gb 5Gb Go!

Naww. Doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

    Bow Wow Wow

However this gives me the idea of one person putting one MP3 on it, and mailing it physically to someone else, who then copies the MP3 and adds an MP3 before sending it to the next person.

I'm lazy, anyone heard of such a thing?

Ariana's tape MP3 player is the best thing I've seen all week. Of course, having missed that entirely (and denounced mp3 players as a "fad") I now feel impossibly old.

I believe the main intention of this device is as a gift, somewhat justifying its price tag for the kitsch of the packaging.

It's 64mb too, which is just about right for the length of a tape.

The bit I like is the concept of the mixtape as object in and of itself. The hand-written track listings, on those impossible and tiny fucking lines. It's a thing worth having as a thing.
