    I've been trawling forums for two days now - can someone either tell me (in a fairly non-techhead way):
    a) How to split a 36.4Gb harddrive into 16.8Gb and 19.6Gb partitions using Windows Disk Management.
    or
    b) How to do the same thing during the 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) Ubuntu installation process.

    Thank you very very much to anyone who can tell me how to do this.

    Basically, I want a small section of my harddrive left as it is to play games on, since most of my games aren't technically supported by WINE. Hence the 16.8 section - that's how full it is now, sans all non-essentials. I want the other partition to use for Ubuntu-stuff, since having tested it with the LiveCD launch, its programs are much more suited to my needs.

    only way Windows Disk Management will be able to split the drive into 2 partitions is if you run Vista

    otherwise, as long as you have around 20Gb of free space on the existing drive, use GParted. it's an open source equivalent of Partition Magic in the form of a bootable linux ISO. just download, burn and boot from disk; plus its graphical interface looks the same as Windows Disk Management anyway so it's pretty straight forward

    Windows can't resize partitions unless you're running Vista as aaron suggests or unless you're in the middle of reinstalling it afresh. The windows install CD will let you define any partitions you want at that point. I've not used GParted but you might also look at 'The Ultimate Windows Boot CD'. I think I'm right in saying that that has some repartitioning magic on it a la Partition Magic as well.

    GParted should be on the Ubuntu LiveCD, and it's really straight forward to use.

    Cheers guys. I was convinced I could partition in XP, since the help said I could, but I couldn't work out how to do it.

    I'll try GParted instead.

    I've been using Acronis at work for partitioning and redundant HD backups - great for hard drive upgrading (cloning to a secondary drive)....

    I would also recommend gparted. It's very easy to use, and I've never run into any problems with it. I've had some fun with fdisk, it is indeed very manly, but gparted is way easier and I don't have any particular desire to use fdisk in the future so long as I have other options.
