    hey kids. a bunch of you have been asking about burial/dubsteb. i've been arguing that burial really has nothing to do w/ dubstep at all and isn't very indicative of the style.


    one of my closest friend, aaron shinn, does a really sick mix/podcast - his latest one is dedicated to the current crop of dubstep. i think ya'll might really dig it.

    excellent, essential summer listening. perfect for the hot humid nights here in new york city. even better for driving.

    "Dubstep is insane right now. Many of the old talents who brought the sound to global prominence (Skream, Distance, DMZ, Loefah, Hatcha, and Kode 9) have been very quiet this year. Fortunately, the power vacuum has been good for dubstep.

    Until very recently, it was looking like Dubstep might follow the same path as Drum N Bass. Since the late nineties, DnB has been an endless competition between producers to express the same formula in harder, heavier executions.

    The present climate in Dubstep resembles the earlier days of Drum N Bass ā€“ Iā€™m thinking 1994 here ā€“ when nobody really knew what the formula was. Newer producers are working to put their own signature on the sound, and new talent is emerging constantly.

    This mix, titled Mavericks, captures some of the madness of the moment. Please enjoy it loud."

    i found a huge amount of dubstep things on some russian website a while back - took days to wade through to find the gems. I agree about Benga. Skream have their moments, Peverlist is rather nice, TRG's 'horny' is fantastic, 6Blocc's re-editing of Kraftwerk's 'Numbers' (and 'Clear' by Cybotron) is fantastic however, Burial, I see as more of a throwback to the UK garage thing from 2001ish only executed properly and with imagination. A lot of dubstep seems to have more in common with Mr Oizo than anything else with their wonky noises and use of 8t within a 4/4 beat. It's like a hybrid of Garage, Drum and Bass with a healthy dose of Warp's 'Artificial Intelligence' series thrown in to keep it from veering into blandness.

    Is dubstep like what On U Sound were doing in the 80's? Heavy dub meets Eat Static?

    adrian sherwood's on-u sound is less definable - from straight dub to all-out mentalist but not dubstep which is a hybrid of garage, drum and bass, techno with very low bass. There are some straight dub variations in dubstep from what I've heard, which is more like the stuff youth put out on his wau mr modo label years ago ie. dub at dj friendly tempos

    Adrian Sherwood did a couple of sets on Wednesday night at Meltdown. He was more dance friendly and less heavy, heavy dub than I remember he used to be. Mark Stewart and the Maffia played, and they sounded more garagy in some parts, so maybe that influenced what he was playing. We were just about to leave when Adrian Sherwood put some d&b on, which caused us to stay to the end (and got me into to trouble with my wife for getting home at 2am stinking of beer).

    cool, i'm glad you kids dig it. aaron really knows what he's doing. you should check out his other mixes. he has a brilliant basic channel/chain reaction one that he did a long long time ago, i'm gonna see if i can't get him to make it available.

    Grabbing it now. I spent ten days in the Alps being driven by mountain roads by an insane animator with a penchant for dubstep. So I'm really only starting to just get into it.

    Nice. Very cool.

    I bought Dubstep Allstars Vol. 3 just yesterday and it's a way flatter mix. Not bad, just flatter, a surface mix... representative of less of the scope of the form. Form/genre? Whichever.
    Anyway...
    Dubstep Allstars 3 is good though. It's a mix by Kode9 feat. the SpaceApe and it's more like an essay than the above, to be honest.

    Checking the mix out now.

    My favourite dubstep at the moment is the almost trance-y, 4-4 stuff with nasty Nintendo noises... Zomby, Joker, TRG, Rustie et al. I think there's a big risk of dubstep becoming over-exposed and played out... but it's a much more diverse genre than drum and bass. Because the beats are as much about what's left out as what's put in, there's more room for a producer to create their own style within the form.

    Burial therefore is dusbtep IMHO... just very different to the likes of Benga and Skream (you're right Warren - these guys make shiny pop).

    Also, I've heard Burial pitched up to plus 16 and mixed into techno - it sounds amazing.... It's unique music that he makes, and kind of transcends both it's dancefloor potential and it's coffee-table acclaim.. it's just Great Art.

    Furthermore... dubstep has just hit outside London in the last few years... The London lot are all going to be officially 'over' it at some point, but just because they say it's dead, doesn't mean it has to die. I know dubstep producers in Poland, Canada, New Zealand and the USA, all of whom are releasing or working on tracks. There's going to be a massive wave of the stuff pretty soon. I for one can't wait. Just as in d&b, many of the key figures in the later history of the scene were not from London (Teebee, Craze etc), I think dubstep's second wave will prove to be a really diverse bunch of weirdness. Bring it on.

    Dubstep also has its roots in very old music (dub and reggae, people like On-U Sound and Pole, early techno), rather than d&b which was all about the rave, the jungle and the jazz. D&B never improved on the jungle template... jungle had room to brathe, whereas most d&b from after 1995 or so was massively overproduced - the dance music equivalent of hair metal (Noisia, I'm looking at you), or just parping trumpets and breakbeats inna cheesy style (EZ Rollers, Shy FX) as beloved by Guy Ritchie. Dubstep's darker. It's got atmosphere.
