    regarding the great WE's recent blog post:


    I would love to see what Mr Ellis could do with Cloak & Dagger. Marvel has had them appear here and there recently (mostly as an excuse to teleport people around via Cloak). I have always loved those characters and they are long deserving of some real attention.

    Hilarious! Still, I always thought that Ellis could do something funny with the old Hulk villain The Leader, and to my surprise he did that in Ultimate Human. Other than that, Angar the Screamer maybe? Or Rom Spaceknight? Or perhaps just let him loose on a New Nick fury mini.

    Yeah, I know. They tried to feature him in an issue of Paradise X (the futuristic Jim Krueger/Alex Ross maxiseries) back in 2003, but since they couldn't depict the actual character, they showed a naked man with a weapon very like the one that Rom used. And then Captain America shouted: "The greatest of the spaceknights!" (I think.. been a few years since I read this.) Anyway, it wasn't really the same.

    As for why so many people love him? Who knows? I've only read one issue, but managed to pick up the entire run for 14 dollars on ebay recently. Hope it's worth it...

    Monarch Starstalker had good ideas. And it was throwaway. Howard certainly wasn't going to give them his Cody Starbuck™ property. It isn't as if Willie Lumpkin hasn't been lampooned by Fred Hembeck enough. Devil Dinosaur and Forbush Man in NextWave, Agents of H.A.T.E. were all kinds of silly wonderfulness. There has to be better stuff than the "Elf with a gun" in the Marvel Archives. Howard bestowed his standard gift of immortality on Nick to explain why he was an active octogenarian. I think there are even older properties in the Steranko run that got revitalized then worth playing now with that have some appeal.

    @GlennMoane The Leader?

    Perhaps? More engaging than the Thinker or Paste Pot Pete. Did the Red Ghost ever amount to anything?

    I think ROM: Spaceknight has a lot of fond memories attached to it because it was a title that was willing to blow everything up about it. The first 49 issues were pretty status quo and standard stuff, good but mysterious alien among us hunting down bad aliens, but tragically misunderstood.

    But at issue 50, I think it was Asst Editor Month, they killed off the entire supporting cast of a town, traumatized the sidekick and took their war out of the shadows.

    Nowadays, that sort happens all the time, but at the time, it probably warped all of our brains into thinking Rom was the coolest thing evah.

    Plus, it had Rick Jones, Marvel everyboy. How could it go wrong?

    Haven't they tried to relaunch the SpaceKnight franchise a couple times, without ROM, because the toy images were licensed, but with other characters?

    Jesus, as much as I loved the Hulk comics as a kid, I really thought the Leader looked silly. The Peter David/McFarlane redesign from the 80's is much better I think, and that was what Ellis and Nord were going for in the recent mini. But I think Bruce Jones changed his apperance once again in his final Hulk arc, where he was just some blob in a glass tube or something. Try make a miniseries out of that!

    It seems Marvel is using alot of thier super C-listers and below as filler for The Initiative...I mean Annex showed up...Annex. I was amzed i actually even remembered who that was or when he showed up.

    When they are pulling in Annex to fill a title's roster they have got to be getting down to slim pickings for Characters that arent being used at the moment.

    That can't make your mad scientist duties any easier, Warren.

    Guardians of the Galaxy.

    Not the new series, from what I've seen that's just taken the name and slapped it on modern characters. I'm talking about the future marvel universe group. I bought the Jim Valentino series (50 issues that he did) wholesale at a flea market when i was a teenager.

    Man, that is some crazy shit.

    Set a 1000 years in the future, All the planets in the solar system have been colonized by, what are essentially, post-humans. Crystal people for the cold of Pluto, squat strong men for Jupiter, fire people for mercury. There's a guy who got stuck in a sleeper ship for a 1000 year journey that turned out to be pointless as humans figured out the whole FTL thing while he snored away. Iron man's armor was found by an alien race who worship him as a cargo cult god and turn themselves into cyborgs. Alien religions, the remnants of superheroes and their legacy and Valentino riffing the whole thing as space opera.

    I'd buy an update of that.

    I had a pretty good idea for Angar once, but then the Epic pitch thing ended, so it just became a throwaway headline in INVISIBLE, INC. Man, that was a bizarre character.

    How about doing something with War Machine's old Eidolon Warwear? This is almost certainly nostalgia talking, but I think there's a lot that could be done with ancient alien robot suits that sing glorious battle anthems.

    at first I thought this thread title read: "On miming Marvel"...which I was strangely disappointed to find out that wasn't the case.

    @warren- couldn't it be argued that there could be some artistic freedom with taking over established 3rd or 4th string characters and making them good though?

    Quick! Snag the Marvel 2099 characters while you still can! What do you mean there isn't good material in Ravage?

    Maybe they'll have to start tracking which characters have been dormant for long enough to revive them, rationing them out to the writers. A perfect clockwork cycle of "renewal", forever.
    Haha, what am I saying, we all know Ultimate Speedball will be the best comic ever.
