    Amy Winehouse has emphysema.

    Mitch Winehouse said the incurable illness, which leaves sufferers struggling for breath, was diagnosed when his daughter had series of health checks in hospital.

    "The doctors have told her if she goes back to smoking drugs it won't just ruin her voice, it will kill her," he was quoted as saying in the Sunday Mirror. "The doctors have said that if she had continued the way she was going she could have ended up an invalid -- she wouldn't have been able to breathe."

    He added: "She's got emphysema. It's in its early stages, but had it gone on for another month they painted a very vivid picture of her sitting there like an old person with a mask on her face struggling to breathe.

    "With smoking the crack cocaine and the cigarettes, her lungs are all gunked up. There are nodules around the chest and dark marks. She's got 70 percent lung capacity."


    How's that for depressing?

    My favorite part of that story?

    He called on drug dealers to help her recovery by refusing to supply her with crack cocaine.


    Because crack dealers are sure to hold off on selling illegal drugs out of concern for the welfare of their clients.

    Very, very sad. Winehouse was so amazing before she completely fried her brain. I was so hoping that we might one day get a Winehouse album free from the detestable remixes the record companies tossed on.

    I believe Mr. Ellis once called her a poor Sade impersonator.

    I don't believe we need Miss Winehouse to provide a cautionary tale about drug abuse. She is hardly the first, nor will she be the last, musician with this particular vice.

    It's almost as if famous rock and pop musicians haven't been dropping dead from drug use for years or something...

    What's really depressing is that she's 24 years old but looks like she's in her mid-thirties. That's a real warning for our generation.

    Define "our generation"? 'Cause I know there are posters here in their late teens if not younger, and I know there are posters over forty, which implies roughly two generations right there, and I wouldn't be surprised if the spread of ages on here is wider than that.

    Didn't Warren once post a link to a site with a dead pool on when Amy Winehouse would die?

    I think it's pretty depressing the way Amy Winehouse totally wrecked her life, but it's not like I have any real sympathy. She did it to herself.

    Zero sympathy here too. It's not a secret, the effects her lifestyle would have on her health. I hope she enjoyed those years of stupidity, because they're over now one way or another.

    All I know about Amy Winehouse is the album and her being a semi-regular on Never Mind The Buzzcocks last year (before it was hosted by the annoying curly-headed dude). She seems like a nice enough person, but everyone's piling on like she's Naomi Campbell or Madonna. Her dad tells the press that her lungs are fucked but makes a point of saying she can still play Glastonbury and a benefit later. Her lungs probably won't survive it, but at least it'll bring the money in a little longer. You can always spare a bit of sympathy for the harmless and/or doomed and save the moral indignation for the stage dad and the record company execs who stood by and let it all happen (like with Michael Jackson) as long as the money kept rolling in.

    The woman needs a long holiday away from London, from her dad and from all the amateur moral policemen.

    What? No... she hasn't even got emphysema -- she's just got a case of crack-lung like every other junkie that inhales too deeply. It's basically just pneumonia and it goes away if you, oh I don't know, put the crack-pipe down.

    However, he has since modified that statement. According to MTV News, Mitch Winehouse told BBC 1 Radio on Monday that his daughter fainted at her home on June 16 and has been diagnosed with what he called "a small amount of emphysema." The soul singer's lungs do show a small amount of scarring, but her illness has not progressed "too far," her father said.

    "It's not irreparable. Really, she can't even smoke anymore, let alone that other thing. With patience, her lungs will recover completely. She's responding very well to treatment, she's flourishing," he said.

    The singer's U.S. publicist, Tracey Miller, agreed, saying on Monday that Winehouse is "showing early signs of what could lead to emphysema but is reacting well to treatment."

    Did whitechapel just blend my two least favorite things ever? Reitterating the painfully obvious point that smoking drugs is bad for you and celebrity gossip?

    Sure she's talented, who gives a fuck? Everyone's got god damn talent. She happens to be on crack, leave her alone.

    She seems like a nice enough person


    Apart from headbutting someone for not letting her jump the line at the pool table, and punching another guy in the face for hailing a cab for her (both in the same night) and generally being a junky skank. She wasted our time here (I work in a London hospital) not that long ago when she over did it on the crack and E and had a panic attack. There were police armed with sub-machine guns here yesterday and someone joked they were to keep Amy Winehouse away.
