    whats up chumps?
    listening fodder over the last 3-4 days:
    CODE 13/DS13- worldwide hardcore pride split 7" ( MN crust thrash vs swedish skate hardcore)
    TEAR IT UP/DOWN IN FLAMES split 7" (NJs finest bands of the last decade kill it, and cover one of each others songs)
    HUMMINGBIRD OF DEATH- goatmeal 5" (seriously ridiculous, like 4 second powerviolence songs)
    DON KNOTTS- we're fuckin don knotts 7" ( blatant CHARLES BRONSON rip- off, with the song title of the week "if you dont have a boyfirend, ill take you to long john silvers")
    HOT CROSS/ LIGHT THE FUSE AND RUN split 7" ( indie rock-hardcore masters of rock-itude)
    FYP- my man grumpy cd ( pop punk, fast and sloppy- emphasis on the punk. )
    SUICIDE MACHINES- battle hymns (ska punk, turning back the clock to 1998. still great and catchy!)
    various INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH and BLOODY FIST songs streamed from the intrawebzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz (hardcore techno face beatings)
    VITAMIN X- see through the lies 12" ( Dutch sXe, im very excited to play with them in the fall so i pulled this one out)
    AFI- decemberunderground 12" (this record sounds like last fall to me now. its strange how things become attached to feelings, times, and events so quickly)

    Hey, it's always nice to see Light The Fuse and Run showing up somewhere. I played in other bands with 4/5 of that band, and the fifth member is one of my best friends and shared a PO Box with me for a decade.

    I'm finally starting to get out of the rut I've been in over the last two weeks where I only wanted to hear three or four things during any given four-day period. I was starting to get on my own nerves with that shit.

    I used to think I was pretty out there listening to Ministry and Fantomas but I am overwhelmed by the volume and profusion of bands you list. None of whom I have heard of which makes me feel very old and straight. Help me rediscover my youthful anger and energy. Recommend one hardcore band to get me started. Yes, one. You can do it.

    mark: SCHOLASTIC DETH. self proclaimed bookstore core! they arent very out there, its basic fastcore but i love them profusely. they have a discography cd called FINAL EXAMINER with everything they did on it- if you are of the inliclination to look for things in physical format- the booklet alone is worth it.

    got NIN live- And All That Could Have Been in the car. Yeah, I know...23 years old and I love Trent's high school lyrics. Anyway, I love this album and Trent sounds so damn liberated on it. It makes me feel that way too when I turn it up.

    THe coolest CD yet by the band that inspired SKINNY PUPPY"s initial approach to making noise
    PORTION CONTROL's "SLUG" has just been released. Just try listening to trk 5 "HEAVYWEIGHT" and see if that don't just tickle yer BRASS ones in a way that's MIGHTY FINE.
    Meanwhile, GARY NUMAN's "JAGGED EDGE" 2CD set of remixes from his latest CD "JAGGED" was officially released yesterday according to his website. And judging from the sample mixes he posted, I'll be rockin away in a dark room to this one for the next INFINITY...
    BAD SECTOR's new mini-CD "CMASA" is a gloriously beautiful mindblower of a textural piece.
    I've also just remastered 2 of my favorite LPs for my personal listening pleasure and now I'm in love with them all over again! THese are 2 artists that surfaced for only 1 LP and am ep or 2 in 1987.
    the 1st: PRINCESS TINYMEAT's "Herstory" LP (formerly of the VIRGIN PRUNES) is a collection of 9 songs with a range of expression that is virtually unheard of today. So Much DARKNESS yielding up so much LIGHT and giddy MADNESS and megalomania. Those who know of this release have all carved out a special cobwebbed cubby-hole in their dark little hearts for this one, just like I did....
    The 2nd is a little known band from DETROIT called the GARGOYLE SOX. They released an amazing full length LP ("THe Headless Horsemen") and maxi-ep ("As the Master Sleeps") with some of the most playful and demented GOTHIC WESTERN Influenced music I've ever heard. I love the sound of good and dark gothic western music and I'm ALWAYS searching for more.

    @joe.distort--I sang for Tri State Killing Spree. We released an LP on Six Weeks in 2002. Both of Light The Fuse's guitarists, as well as the drummer, all played guitar in Tri State Killing Spree at one point or another (Light The Fuse was the only band that drummer ever played drums in--he also played guitar and sang in Force Fed Glass, if that name means anything to you). The bassist played with me in a band called Soma--he played guitar, I played bass--but all that band ever released was a demo.

    whoa! thats neat, i have that tristatekillingspree 12", and i had no idea there was a relation to LTFAR. i also had that forcefedglass split pic 7" with the swarm, but i couldnt find it recently. i think ive drunkenly traded it to someone, which infinitely sucks. nice to (internet) meet you, that record smokes.

    My wife recently picked up the new Alanis Morrisette album. Its electronica/big guitar parts make it sound like it was new and innovative a decade ago...in a way that's not entirely bad. Considering how much I loathed the overplaying of her singles back in 96, it's nice to transmutate that into anything else.

    I'll have to listen to this Portion Control you speak of, @yerathrall. Princess Tinymeat sounds interesting, too.

    Queens of the Stone Age, self-titled; QOTSA are brilliant anti-pop. Catchy songs that edge on brain-candy
    Slayer, Diabolus En Musica; A weird record for Slayer that nicely breaks from the 'freight-train' appeal of previous works
    Faith No More, Album of the Year; A good record and I'm trying to figure out why it's not as memorable as Angel Dust or King for a Day. It is FNM, after all, and they always were one of my favorites.

    And anything Tom Waits



    I saw him in El Paso last weekend and he's a bloody genius. I learned he's a fantastic conductor, as I watched with a musician's eyes...

    This is a weekly thread? Clearly I do not lurk enough.

    @Chris: If it makes you feel any better, I'm 20 and AATCHB is still one of my favorite NIN albums. I think that there's a certain honest quality about live albums from tortured artists (provided that they're actually ARTISTS and not typical radio fodder), and there's nothing wrong with indulging in a little angst.

    In any case, this week I've been playing:
    QOTSA: Lullabies to Paralyze
    TOM WAITS: ...everything
    THE BIRTHDAY PARTY: Hee-Haw
    BOB DYLAN: Desire
    and scattered songs on the computer. I can't remember how many times I've sung Be Prepared from The Lion King. And I will not apologize for my affinity for Jeremy Irons.

    Not a digital table. I just hooked the headphone jack on the stereo to the line in on the mac and used Golden Records to rip it. It mostly splits the tracks itself providing the break is long enough, but if not I use AudioSlicer to make the edits. There's programs to clean up the pops and crackles, but why would you want to do that?
