does anyone remember famous examples of comics creators and comics fans doing battle on the Internet, or other situations where communication broke down between folks in each group?

The one that immediately comes to mind (although it might not be all that big - I don't visit many message boards) was the war between JMS and some of the denezins of r.a.c. (rec.arts.comics) back when Sins Past was coming out. The fans position was "this is complete and utter bullshit." JMS's position was basically "you haven't seen the entire thing, wait until it finishes."

This was, of course, before it was revealed that Gwen Stacy had sex with Norman Osborn.

Quote by JMS that sticks out vividly: "there's an upcoming scene [where Peter desecrates Gwen grave in order to get a tissue sample] that was the hardest thing I've ever had to write"

With all respect, I can't see this thread going anywhere well or doing anything but inciting flames. I don't see a good reason to bring up fights between people that have since ended (or even current ones), and even less so fights that may have involved friends of members of this board.

But don't you know the Internet is for porn and flame wars?

There are so few "hardcore" comics readers here, compared to Millarworld/Bendis Board/Panel & Pixel, that I don't think you're going to get much here. You're hitting the other sites with this, I presume?

because of the creators work or other reasons? Dave Sim seemed to alienate most of his audience "for other reasons".

It wasn't my intent to start or re-start any flamewars or whatever they're called these days -- I'm just interested in how a new technology had an effect on a specific aspect of an arts culture, and I'd never thought about it in those terms until a friend of mine asked after it.

Warren's right in that I was probably addled to ask here given this board is skewed away from hardcore comics culture. I blame alcohol, senility and a general withdrawal from message boards. Sorry, Warren!

    Thanks for the JMS example!
