some highlights include a character who comes to disbelieve in the narrator/author, becoming an in-comic atheist, truly alien psychologies (an earthworm with human sentience, a golem scarecrow without any biological imperatives), and a frankly creepy underlying fact that past a certain point, the entire comic is based on the slowly composting corpse of a character from another webcomic.

But I had Joey Manley pull the comic from Graphic Smash a while back with the intent of retooling the concept a bit and re-running it on my own site. (Before I discovered that the comic only exists in un-colored/ un-corrected/ far-from-web-ready .psd format, and that's a lot of work I'm not up for right now.)

Jane Irwin's CLOCKWORK GAME is activated again, and is now into all new page posts. This amazingly well researched and loving story of the "life" of the Turk, the chess playing automaton, is told from the views of its various owners. More than clockwork geekery, Jane's story delves into the relationship and lives of the people who created the legend of this machine, and had to live with its fame and infamy. Her story is full of details on the circumstances of the automaton's life, but also telling how its mere presence impacted all manner of scientist, thinker and common person.

For those of you who know Jane's work through her VOGELEIN books, you'll be very surprised to see the quantum leap up on the art and writing on this one. Amazing line work and cross-hatching will bowl you over. And Jane's attention to details is where this story really excels, on the art AND contextual storytelling levels. Now for the shameless plug, I've been putting together a webcomic experiment, it is actually more of a storybook than webcomic, or web storybook.
