I never liked Superman because I always felt he was a one-dimensional hero:

You want to take over the world? You better have Kryptonite or your F'ed.

This comic brought a lot of diffenrent perspectives to the idea of a Super Man and made me really wonder whether to cheer for the good guys or the bad guys...and really wonder which was which!

Anyone else pick this baby up?
I'd love your opinions on it.

I loved Wanted and have the poster as my avatar on a number of sites. The fact the premise was a nasty joke played on him by his older brother was perfect.
Most of the emo vegetarians could do with spending a couple shifts in a slaughterhouse to give them a bit of perspective. I really liked Red Son as well.
I am a huge fan of the soviet artwork and giant 60 foot tall statues of the common worker. We are just now getting enough perspective on the cold war to realize that the Soviets were more scared of us than we were of them. The great premise was let down a bit by the story though.

Is there really anything more boring than a hero who can beat anyone without even trying?

I just realized that Wanted and the Boys are very similar and if you like one you will probably like the other.

I thought some of you might like to see some real soviet realism. Here is Stalin as an organizer.
<img src="http://<a href=" target="_blank" >>

I bought it as an Xmas present for a Supes fan who hadn't read it, and he claimed that he missed out on saying goodbye to his extended family who were staying because he couldn't put it down.

I couldn't honestly say that Mark Millar is a truly great writer, but I've enjoyed the hell out of plenty of his work like Wanted, Chosen and The Ultimates. MagicSword!: That's interesting! Also explains why the idea comes out of left-field in the ending (I didn't like the ending of Red Son). I'd imagine Morrison would do it better.

Honestly though, and I know everyone's saying it, but give All-Star Superman a chance. At first, I hated The Punisher, but Ennis has made him the most fascinating character Marvel publishes these days (MAX version, of course). It can happen. It all depends on approach. Morrison's method of making the entire run come off as The Trials of Superman or the like while mixing up ideas from Golden to modern age really does pay-off. Approach it as if it was a science-fiction story, and you'll see just how entertaining it can be when the Man of Steel realises he's so powerful he can afford to be the calmest cherub on the face of the Earth. And that makes all the difference.

Only this:

Robbie 'Cracker' Coltrane saying, "Good night, sweet prince," when absinthe poseur boy kicks the bucket. Oh, Robbie, no amount of money is worth ALL your dignity. The only other ending to a film that comes even marginally close to being as pathetic is Brad Pitt's bear wrestle in Legends Of The Fall, though at least the bear scene has the added benefit of being perhaps the most brilliant bit of comedy in any film made in the past half century.

Am I the only person alive who wants to see Johnny Depp surgically conjoined to Nicholas Cage and fired into space?

Between them they comprise the two greatest efforts to explore the very nature and character of Superman by putting him in a situation totally outside of, and apart from, his usual fare of megalomaniacal aliens and super-scientists.

Both Red Son and Secret Identity use the change in scenario almost exclusively to explore some aspect of Superman, bringing otherwise unused (and potentially more interesting) parts of his character to the fore. In Red Son, it was his desire to give humankind a completely pain-free existence, at the cost of all else; in Secret Identity, Busiek toyed with the notion of the psychological isolation you would inevitably feel as a result of being a god made flesh.

Both are highly recommended.
