As stated in the closed sdcc thread, less of a crowd. I met Ted Brandt and some of the avatar peeps. Spent way too much money and got a neck tattoo.

The Comedians of Comedy show was great except for Sarah Silverman who's performance felt phoned in compared to everybody else.

San Diego's public transportation kicks ass, by the way. TOO CROWDED. They are simply incapable of managing the insane volume of people that show up. The security company is a fucking mess, they don't know what the fuck is going on from one end of the hall to the other. They need to send all the starfuckers packing. I say cut the attendees back by at least 30%. I'd gladly pay more money to go to a show with less people.

I did see some awesome panels (The Goon with the Reno 911/State guys) and pick up some amazing artwork. I was there Wed-Sun, way too long. Next year Fri-Sat only.

I agree with the too many people and I'm all for even a 15% to 20% cutback.
In years past I've been able to get into panels in a reasonable amount of time.
This year I didn't even try, it just looked that bad.

Comic Con is odd for me, because I know and go w/ industry people, but I'm not actually in it.
The best time I had actually was dinner later w/ a bunch of good folks, but that's usually true.

I bought a book from Wil Wheaton, who is pretty damn nice and cool.
Met Phil & Kaja Foglio of Girl Genius fame, who are also great.
Got to talk to the good folks over at Kingdom of Loathing.
Saw the guys from Penny Arcade, xkcd and Bob the Angry Flower. Picked up Crecy from the Avatar booth.
Purchased some Cthulhu related stuff, some small art prints and a yoyo, which brought me great joy.

Twitter made the entire Con experience a little more surreal, especially when I was getting only 2/3 of the messages.
The only thing I missed that I'm bummed about is Kim Evey and the Gorgeous Tiny Chicken Machine Show peeps.
It's my favorite show on teh internets.

I was only there one day this year, and spent most of it on the floor.
Though a panel or two would have been nice, it was good to be able just get in and out.

My pics are here: Elmo Martin - Comic Con 2008 Pics

It didn't seem as crowded as in the past, altho it was difficult to get where I wanted to get to, with people stopping right in front of me or throngs of people crowding around skantily clad women. (since when did a bra and panties together with a cape represent a costume?)

The most awesome experience for me was sitting in a Ray Bradbury panel, (Yes he is still alive) He is a literary legend and a personal favortie of mine, being the first sci-fi author I read @ 13 years old.

I was hunbled in his presence.

I bought lots of comics, TPB's, and a very cool Freakangels T-shirt.

I think it was my best con.
:)

Had a crazy first SDCC... still processing through haze of drunkeness and exhaustion. Had two things announced (one for IDW, one for ew.com) and firmed up a few things that had been simmering for a bit.

My one cool story happened at the EW/Sci Fi party: amid the food, drink and folks I managed to grab some time with HEROES' Masi Oka who was kind enough to call my seven month pregnant wife (who was unable to attend SDCC) at 2AM NYC time to say hello and wish her a healthy pregnancy. Ten minutes later, after saying goodbye to him, my wife (exhausted, apparently) texted me to ask who the hell she had just spoken to. I called her in the morning to clarify and her response? "Really? DAMN IT. I would've said more to him!"

Ah, Comic-Con

Through the fog that is the past few days, I remember that the exhibition floor on Wednesday night was packed but there were other times throughout the weekend when it was surprisingly manageable. I think that many four day people got their shopping done early and then stayed away from the exhibition hall. There were people who were only there for the freebies and hung around the Warner Bros/studios/gaming areas and didn't linger in the comics areas. Many day pass people cleared out before the hall closed.

On Saturday at about 6pm, I decided that I would go to the Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Artschool http://www.myspace.com/drsketchysandiego and went to go buy a sketchbook and pencils in the exhibition hall. I couldn't remember where it was but was able to walk from Artist's Alley (totally not seeing the Blick's art supplies booth) down the back row all the way to the browncoats booth at almost full walking speed. It made me understand in a whole new way how vast the exhibition all really is.

Sunday morning seemed pretty quiet. I overheard one of the back issues dealers say that the collectors didn't seem to be there. Less people doesn't necessarily make it easier to walk around, though. I had to step around a couple of kids sitting on the floor in one of the rows eating pizza slices. People were stopping in the middle of rows to chat or answer their cell phones or just stop and try to get their bearings, all oblivious to the many people logjamming behind them.

The new checked luggage fees made me more hesitant than in past years to buy tons of stuff. I put together a care package for my 12 year old cousin who likes anime and mailed it on Saturday. In addition to all the anime-related freebies and some toys I bought for him, I tried to include other comics that he might capture his interest. At first, I was going to send him ALL the freebie comics I picked up but then I realized that not all of them had content that I would find appropriate for a kid and, just as important, that a lot of it wasn't all that good.

Great question: what would YOU buy a twelve year old to expand his comics horizon? From one of the half off graphic novel guys, I bought a Jim Lee Batman, a Groo...um...I forget what else...and then cheaped out and resolved to start sending him books from my own collection.

I didn't see a lot of panels this year. Sometimes, it was because the lines were too long. Other times, I just got distracted and skipped them. I saw the Spotlight on Al Jaffee aaand I think that (I'm choosing my words delicately) perhaps sometimes Mark Evanier isn't able to create a dynamic dialogue with the person he's interviewing.

I saw the "Repo! The Genetic Opera" preview with Paris Hilton and Ogre. Yes, I admit it. Highlight: Alexis Vega (Spykids) is really good at telling interesting anecdotes. She explained that her management company had wanted her to have nothing to do with the project and hadn't forwarded her the script but the director contacted her via myspace. He told her he was the director of the Saw movies but Vega's sister was in "Saw I" and didn't know who he was so Vega thought he was a creepy liar until she googled him and found out he worked on the sequels.

The director's best anecdote was that when Paris took an initial meeting with them, he was surprised at how different she was in real life and she used words that even he didn't know what they meant. He didn't elaborate what words they were.

Paris said something about being glad to be at Comic Con and added (without enthusiasm, I thought) that Comic Con was "hot". Her fans clapped wildly.

After the panel, the Paris fans rushed the stage and the rest of the audience rushed for the door but THEY WOULDN'T LET US LEAVE. I guess they wanted Paris to make a safe getaway first but she wasn't in any hurry to leave the stage. After a few endless minutes, the person in charge decided that people could exit from the right side of the room and the security guards finally stepped aside and let people escape. I used my precious freedom to see a few minutes of Lost Boys 2. Sometimes, people make bad choices. I don't know what else to say.

Best panel I saw was Larry Marder. It was delightful and nostalgic revisiting Tales of the Beanworld. He had interesting things to say about how Beanworld was influenced by Duchamp's Bride Stripped Bare. I've always liked the piece but I didn't understand it until he explained it.

I arrived home safely with some new good titles and a shopping list for the upcoming year. It was tiring and not the best time I've ever had but I'm damn glad I went.

Personal highlight: Torchwood's John Barrowman (Captain Jack) and Naoko Mori (Tosh) belting out an impromptu duet of "The Last Night of the World" from Miss Saigon that brought the lot of us to our feet in ecstatic spams of giddy joy. During the Torchwood panel John mentioned how he and Naoko had worked together years before in a stage presentation of Miss Saigon. This prompted one adoring fan to ask for an on-the-spot duet. And they DELIVERED. IN SPADES.

Didn't bother with WATCHMEN panel as one would have had to slumber on the concrete outside Hall H the night previous in order to have the remotest chance of attending it. And I suppose the ticket for the free t-shirt (which one had to redeem at the DC booth in the midst of the swirling human vortex) was intended as a reward for their unwavering dedication.

And just who in their right fucking mind takes their babies and toddlers to this madness? You people should be hauled away by Child Protective Services for abuse. Good God Almighty, for the love of Christ, don't EVER,EVER, EVER take the most precious persons in your life, tiny and defenseless as they are, to this clusterfuck. Leave them with responsible trusted caregivers or stay the fuck home.

San Diego's nice, but it's good to be back home in Texas.

 Working working working...

It was a mess--there were parts of the convention floor that were a 5-day train wreck; there were booths (or pavilions) that butchered walking spaces--and let's not get me started on the hellish piles of trash that lined the streets advertising tons and tons of garbage that no one was truly interested in.

I calculated the total amount of walking I did at about 29.5 miles (or 47.47 km for you folks who aren't ignorant Americans like myself).

As a fan--I'm no longer a fan of this con; as a journalist--it's a good payday for me. I doubled up on the money I spent coming out to visit. As a professional who is trying to "break-in" I think this convention must be the most impenetrable of the bunch...because everyone is either hung over, sick with Con flu, or hungover and sick and/or busy dodging the miscreants who aimlessly wander the con floor search for "con loot" which amounts to pieces of paper and little scraps of metal usually.

It was a blast!

Woo Hoo :P

Well, It had a couple of high points. Frank Miller being the key note speaker at the Eisners was inspiring--even though it seemed he was intoxicated.

And Newsarama won an Eisner--it's cool to be apart of a winning team.

Now--I don't want to see a comic book for a week...and I need a flu booster shot and a nap.

Have a good one.

My husband and I only went on Friday this year, and the crowds on the floor were disheartening. Still, we got to see panels with lots of '70s guys, Lynda Barry, and Grant Morrison. On the floor we got to visit Eddie Campbell, Bernie Wrightson, Lynda Barry, and a reasonable number of small press folk. We also almost got crushed when I decided to try for a Battlestar Gallactica bag. If life is ever lost on the convention floor it will be in that crazy Hollywood middle section and it will be over a free bag or a pin.

The bad part of it all is that since we were only there for the day and were overwhelmed by the crowds we never managed to find artist's alley, or very many indie comics people. I think the Con could be fixed if they cap enrollment and, since this is a non-profit comics event after all, set aside and subsidize a Large area of the floor for small press and artists. If Hollywood wants to come they should pay through the nose for a limited amount of space, and that money should be funneled into making everything else happen. I think Hollywood has overwhelmed the convention. For instance, I love Judd Apatow, but what exactly does Pineapple Express have to do with anything? Fine if they want to come, but if they come stick them in Hall H and on one end of the floor and charge them more for everything. Wouldn't that solve it?

I was one of those persons who took a stroller and 8 month old to the Con, and I'd just like to say --- that stroller and child is no bigger than half the fans on the show floor. Most of the people I ran into were rude people trying to jump over the stroller and grab a sticker or postcard. And I protect my child, thank you very much. I mostly stayed to the lesser traveled areas unless there was a specific reason to go to the more crowded areas. And I paid more than enough to go wherever the hell I pleased however the hell I pleased with whomever the hell I pleased. My daughter's safety and happiness was paramount, and I missed most of the signings and panels I wanted to see because I was catering to her and my wife. And I had absolutely no problem with that. Anyone complaining about the kids at the Con either have no children or have forgotten what it is like to be one. In other words, shut up. BTW, I didn't get run over by one single stroller, even my own when the wife was driving. Maybe paying attention to my surroundings and not being rude helped a bit. I've been going to this event for 9 years, and I've rarely been run over by anything but a rabid fan looking for freebies. Maybe we should ban THEM.

The main problem with the Con this year was the programming schedule. The panels were fine once you got into one, but getting in was really tough. Last year the panel schedule was perfect. I was able to get into every panel I wanted, including the Hall H and Ballroom 20 panels. This year I could not get into the single panel I wished to attend because I didn't go stand in line 4 hours prior to the panel. They put historically popular panels in the smallest rooms and didn't make adjustments when the room hit capacity 4 hours before the panel even started. Every single person I spoke with was unhappy with the schedule, and those who attended last year felt that was much better.

Hmmm. An LVCC is an intriguing thought. Lots of hotels, Gi-farging-enormous convention venues. They could use the hotel showrooms for previews.

I used to help run booths at the big old COMDEX and CES shows. I remember hearing that the city didn't like these shows much because computer industry people weren't as much into gambling and booze as, say, the mens' clothing shows. I had a blast meeting so many of you and personally and immediately took every one of your very kind, overwhelmingly-positive comments on GRAVEL and STREETS OF GLORY to heart. Thanks so much for caring so damn much! I was also very pleased to absorb by osmosis the sheer, smiling joy that was expressed whenever anyone mentioned WOLFSKIN. Those who dig it REALLY dig it.

As with last year's con, it's easy to boil down 5 days into one singular, stand-out moment that simply says, "Comic Con". Last year was the overheard comment, "Dude... Did you just step on my lightsabre?" I think this year's quote tops that one:

A very large gentlemen stood in front of the Avatar booth, looking puzzled, confused and intensely interested. He looked at the books in his hands... He looked up to examine our display posters... He looked down at the comics for sale... Wiped the sweat from his brow... He looked at the books in his hands again... Back to the display posters. I had to know what it was that was going through this guy's head. "Can I help you with something?"

And then he asked, with all sincerity, the most baffling, mind-numbing query I've ever heard.

"Who created zombies?" he said.

We all looked at each other. Wow. Uh...

My answer was immediate and authoritative. "Jesus," I told him.

It doesn't strike me as an operation that can make changes, including room changes, on the fly, but perhaps they could expand nighttime programming or open up a few more accordion walls to make bigger rooms. People keep mentioning that the con could be expanded to nearby hotels. Perhaps the meeting rooms should be the first to make the jump and then those rooms would be available for panels?

I'd have to look back at the schedule but there seemed to be fewer panels at any given time on Sunday. Better use of Sunday would be a good move. They could have pushed some kid-friendly popular stuff to Ballroom 20 on Sunday and shifted "Harold and Kumar" and "Hamlet 2" to late night time slots earlier in the weekend.

@sgzax:
It's a pity that you missed artist's alley and the the indie comics guys. If they don't make any radical changes for next year, here's what you do:

There's actually a back entrance to the exhibition hall that drops you into a clear path to both. I can't remember how you get there from the 2nd floor but you take the stairway near where the SCA people have their booths and do their sword battle demos.

Alternately, enter through door B and head straight back through the Gold and Silver age of comics section and you'll end up among the super-small indie folks. Bear left and you'll end up among the smaller companies. Straight back and take a left at the very last row and you'll reach artist's alley (which I hope they move next year into the sails pavilion which I think has plenty of potential to be better used.).

The day players who are only there for the movie previews and ginormous freebie bags tend not to haunt the areas that are freebie-less and strictly comics-oriented. I used this to my advantage when maneuvering the hall.

 "Who created zombies?"

It's well documented that both Whammo and Parker Brothers came up with the process for creating zombies in the early Sixties, which lead to a precedent-setting Supreme Court decision that the process was, in fact, public domain. The news of this was driven to the back pages of all the major newspapers in the country by powerful lobbyists, and the whole subject was stricken from the corporate records of both companies, but the prevailing articles in various Pittsburgh journals did not go unnoticed by a young George Romero....

My first and likely last Comic Con.
Woke up the day I was set to leave sick. Spent packing and the flight out in a daze. Feeling vaguely guilty I was going to make someone sick and vowing to shake no hands.
My traveling companions discovered free crap and relentlessly hunted for more the entire convention. I kept saying things like: "Are you really going to use a Wonder Woman bag anywhere, but here?" "So you found that awesome poster on the floor, did you?" "So you noticed when you wear your blouse open you get more stuff? That's great."
Did enjoy some panels, but the very large ones I was watching the whole thing on a giant screen. I might as well have watched it at home on TV where I can smoke.
The floor was so crowded I mainly avoided it, thus more time at panels. Some of which I attended just to sit down for awhile.
Did get to meet some creators who generally seemed to think I had never heard of them and were either completely disinterested everything or very interested in the girl standing next to me.
On the other hand I really like San Diego. Hit the beach afterward had some great seafood.

I worked at the Mile High Comics booth all 4 days, one 4-hour shift each day. Having the Exhibitor badge was a godsend, I was able to get in early and do some of my browsing and purchasing before the show even opened. Having said that, this show definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm in agreement with the 30% reduction, as well as the stroller sentiment. Acme Industries seriously mishandled the Matt Groening signing (I understand when the guy says he can only sign 15 people's stuff, but when you give out NUMBERED tickets, tickets 1-15 should be the ones to get signed, not first-come, first-serve). And NECA's handling of the Watchman lithograph giveaway was disgraceful.

At the booth, we sold 300 copies of the Watchman trade paperback in about 3 hours on Friday. And Sunday was simply a madhouse, no one could move it was so packed in there (the booth).

Highlights: Picking up the original art page 13 from Frank Ironwine, signed by Carla Speed McNeil and Warren (Warren, the CBLDF guys were saying how nice it was of you to sign that in Chicago, even though your hand was a pulp); getting Howard Chaykin to sign American Flagg #1, telling Jimmy Palmiotti that Jonah Hex #28 was a seriously fucked up story, chatting with Steven Seagle, seeing all the folks at Avatar again (showing Mike Wolfer the leather cover Gravel books was cool), talking to Ed Brubaker, found a really cool book called Helen Killer...

I'll be there again next year, probably just getting sketches and whatnot. It wouldn't bother me at all if the movie/toy/gaming part of SDCC went to Vegas or wherever, and leave the comics in San Diego.

"Amen. This is comparable to the parents that bring their infant into a 9pm showing of WANTED. It has little to nothing that is appropriate entertainment for the kid and is guaranteed to negatively impact the experience for many other attendees."

Really? Taking a baby to a pop culture show where MANY of the exhibits are for kids of ALL AGES and is comfortably loud (in acceptable decibel ranges for a child, about the same as a sleep sheep) is comparable to taking a baby to a VERY LOUD, violent, not-intended-for-children movie about assasins where adults have an expectation of silence except for what is on the screen? Really?

First of all, no one should even be seeing Wanted, so your argument is immediately flawed. And I can't tell you how many of those "adults" peek at their cell phones and talk during the film. I'd rather have a child next to who is actually watching the movie, inappropriate or not, than these rude assholes. Also, Comic Con is for adults, yes, but it is also for kids, and if a baby who is attached to the chest of a mother or father walking the show floor negatively impacts an attendee more than the smelly, obese, rude fan-boys climbing over each other for a free postcard, you must be one of those fan boys.

For instance, my wife and child and I hung out at the Nickelodeon booth for most of the day on Saturday. During that time, they were handing out slap bracelets with various Nickelodeon cartoon characters on it. The booth staffers were just slapping them on pretty much anyone that walked by, and that was fine, but then you had those 40 year old idiots who shove their way to the booth through a bunch of kids, knocking them over, for a fucking orange cloth covered piece of bent metal who complain about the KIDS ruining the show!

Please. If a child can ruin the show for you, you are there for the wrong reasons. Get over it.

My first ever San Diego. I loved it. 5 days of Awesome. The closest big con to this one I've been to was HobbyStar Toronto FanExpo. I found this con to be slightly less crowded (closest it came was Preview night at the corporate area with people wanting their free swag), with higher comics to other stuff ratio, more comics stuff overall due to the sheer size and a greater diversity of comic material. And San Diego weather was beautiful. Being right on the Mexican boarder I thought it would hot as hell, I was surprised that it was cooler there than it is in Canada now. Every single day too. I now see why San Diego is so popular.

I took Pictures and recorded a bunch of panels, including the Eisner Awards.

What I was pleasantly surprised and flattered by was virtually everybody I talked to recognized my name. Some remembered where from, others did not but asked me what I did.

My only disappointment was not seeing/meeting everybody I wanted to meet.

One of the keys for me to enjoying the con was staying away from all the BIG NAME celebrity stuff that I knew would have massive line ups.

I'm sorry, but no one has the right to crash into my legs repeatedly because they're not watching where they push their giant stroller, or take up half an aisle while placing their EMPTY stroller out across it, no matter how much they pay. Fact is, in a place where it's difficult to walk because of the volume of people without them, strollers really have no place. At best, they're an annoyance. At worst, a hazard. That has NOTHING to do with unladen pedestrians not watching where they're going, it has everything to do with the crowded situation.
And you know what? Yes, the super douchey speculator fanboys DO go a long way toward making things unpleasant, but deciding that everyone who doesn't agree with you MUST be one of those immediately invalidates everything else you may have said, valid points or not.

 * AdamK
"I'm sorry, but no one has the right to crash into my legs repeatedly because they're not watching where they push their giant stroller, or take up half an aisle while placing their EMPTY stroller out across it, no matter how much they pay. Fact is, in a place where it's difficult to walk because of the volume of people without them, strollers really have no place. At best, they're an annoyance. At worst, a hazard. That has NOTHING to do with unladen pedestrians not watching where they're going, it has everything to do with the crowded situation."

No, that has to do with rude people, not people with strollers. Fact is, those people would find a way to make your life difficult whether they had a stroller or not. The people who crash into you with a stroller apropos of nothing are the exact same people who jump over the stroller for swag or who walk one ... foot ... an ... hour ... across ... the ... floor ... . Those people are going to annoy you regardless of what accouterments they are adorned with - it is just easier to pick on strollers so there you go.

"And you know what? Yes, the super douchey speculator fanboys DO go a long way toward making things unpleasant, but deciding that everyone who doesn't agree with you MUST be one of those immediately invalidates everything else you may have said, valid points or not. "

EDIT: There is a huge difference between "All people with strollers/children under an age I've decided upon should not go to the show." and "People who complain about kids and strollers have forgotten what the show is about." The first read through was incorrect - I was rushing to get out of the door. In truth, there are certain people/types of strollers that should not be allowed - the extra wide kind. I notice you aren't complaining about people on their motorized trikes. Many of those people can probably walk, they just don't want to. Double wide strollers I will agree should not be allowed - they make ones that are thin and long and those I see no problem with. I see your point, I just think it is the same point as the grumpy old man telling those kids to "Get off his lawn".

Frenchbloke, thank you. That was my point exactly.

The only person I saw on a motorized trike was Ray Bradbury, and I'm not about to bitch that guy out for anything.
And believe me, I get equally pissed at the people who do the slow walk in the middle of the aisles who aren't even looking at anything. I have NO problem with children at the con, either. One of my favorite things is a little kid dressed as their favorite character having a great time. Perhaps I wouldn't be as bothered if more people followed the Frenchbloke plan, in which they warn others of their presence. Unfortunately, I did not encounter ANY of those, just the demolition derby types and it soured me on strollers in general. I like the idea you brought up, with the smaller children in those papoose/harness things, although I understand those could get uncomfortable. I do feel they're way safer than strollers in that environment, though.
