Then there was the Clash-like politics of Oyster Band, and the country-dance-dub of Edward II & The Red Hot Polkas. But it's been 20 years since any British "folk" stopped me in my tracks. I've relied on Scandinavian and Hungarian flavors to fullfill my "dark and strange" folk tastes.

Currently listening to Scars on Broadway, and pleasantly surprised by how melodic it is. Like If You're Feeling Sinister by Belle & Sebastian, which is also on heavy rotation right now for no particular reason. Beautiful album, that. Like Dylan In The Movies just kills me.

I picked up a few slightly older CDs in the Zavvi sale at the weekend, a Wu Tang singles comp, a new Cut La Roc album that I didn't even know had come out, and the Blood Arm album, which I downloaded ...

I've gotta say though, the music scene at the moment, particularly the rock side of things, is incredibly dull at the moment.
There are some nice melodic albums, Fleet Foxes, Dodos & the like, but there's nothing much on the heavier side, and hasn't really been all year.
The single & album charts are full of mediocre, middle of the road crap (okay, nothing new there, but there are usually one or two gems), and the only great albums (imho) have been the Gutter Twins and Pendulum (I wasn't impressed by either NIN album).
All that seemed to come out of SXSW this year have been poppy indie bands, ala Black Kids & MGMT, or the aforementioned melodic bands.
