On one hand I have volunteered in a prison, and traditional prisons are dank, dirty, smelly and horrible...

But on the other side this place is really nice, like a rich person's day spa.

The prisoners I talked to always focused on the control of their lives as the real punishment, the physical conditions were terrible, and they knew that but it was being locked in and totally controlled that really bothered them.

Anyhow at the very least it is really intriguing. Just because someone's homeless doesn't mean they have no ethics. Plus, many of them are too mentally unstable to come up with a plan that far reaching. It is still a prison. They start out with all those rec facilities but they soon quit using them. I bet there were some really nice slave ships as well but I doubt people were clubbing old ladys to ...

I spent a little time in the Surrey(BC Canada) remand centre which is a very modern prison with PODs and these surreal tunnels that they send you down with no guards. They even had piped in radio music from the intercoms and TV and even a Nintendo but after my first night they did not let us out of our cells until after noon and they came and checked my(and I am assuming everyones) knuckles to try and figure out who beat the snot out of the child molester who was brought in the same day as me.

Rather than spend the money and effort on beautiful architecture they should do more to ensure that the people who can be helped don't come back and the people who are dangerous write offs stay locked up.
