Nothing I particulary want to! Quick run through Word, PP and Excel, to make sure we know how to use them. Access invloves basic development of tables, queries, forms and reports for two projects. A really simple database set up. Several people couldn't get their relationships set right, which screwed everything else up, hence the crying.

Paul's said more than once that these pages are, if you like, "beta" versions. Six pages of full art and colours a week is a punishing schedule for anyone, and Paul's always made it clear that there will be errors and that errors will get fixed.

Although I've been using that technique to do reflections the whole time. I normally just take more pains to knock it back so its less obvious, or tweak it so the perspective is correct. Art is an illusion, and the illusion breaks at different times for different people. When you see the illusion yourself, just smile and nod as you would at a magic trick you know, since there's little point drawing the magician's attention to how he does his own tricks other than spoiling it for everyone else.

Just optimization for web. All of the pages of course exist as hi-res files for printing, but with a detailed large image at screen resolution, jpegs are the best compromise between file size and image quality.

A couple of disturbing thoughts came to me concerning this week's installment.

If the rogue Freakangel organized this attack, then he might be well aware of the Freakangel defenses and how to counter them. Could this explain the boat that broke away?

Also, if KK is flying here, how far away is she from the place where Luke was attacked? Is she close enough to him to provide some reasonable semblance of aid? Or does this mean that I should start wondering whether poor Luke may be joining the choir eternal shortly?

The spiral of death is really pretty, and I've seen that kind of thing in anime gatling guns before, but, um, that's not how a gatling gun works. The barrels spin so that they can be loaded at one point of of the cycle, and fire on another, usually at the top, so it's easy to aim. That is, the mechanism that loads the barrel and the firing pins that trigger them are fixed, and the barrels spin past them. I guess you could make some sort of fixed barrels-rotating loading and firing mechanisms design, if you really wanted something that would shoot pretty spirals, and wanted to make things a few orders of magnitude more difficult to design, but in the last panel, the barrels are clearly spinning past the stationary point on the top right where the belt feeds into them, so, no, that doesn't make sense.

But yeah, it looks cool.

The gun loads from the back, in the manner of a revolver reloader. The gatling-style action is to put spin on the flechettes for flight stability.

As per jziegler, the spin wouldn't work because each barrel isn't spinning around its own axis. In firearms we use rifling to achieve this effect, but with darts or rockets et al one can just slightly tilt the fins to spin the projectile.

Unfortunately, having the multiple barrels spinning around the central axis means that the darts are going to be spun outwards in a cone, due to centrifugal force. Which /could/ be useful from a perspective of saturating the target zone, but isn't apparently intentional.

Dear physics geeks: yes, I know centrifugal force is not a true force, an illusion caused by inertia etc, but it works for the explanation.

got turned on to FreakAngels last week through EpicFu, read episodes 1-21 straight thru. this is the first episode I've had to wait for. now I'm up to speed with the rest of you wackos, eagerly anticipating each friday's installment.

I must say, I was expecting major bloody violence this week, my expectations completely ignoring the pitch-perfect pace of this story so far. now that I'm on the weekly schedule with the rest, I'll just have to get used to it. The Gun, though, sure set the tone for the level of violence to expect next week. I mean, last week, you see intruders coming and naturally expect to have them bleed within the next 6 pages. This week, The Gun has been fired and those huge fuckin' darts will hit something. (unless speculation is correct and this is the unlikely return of Mark, in which case, he might be able to intervene)

while we're on the subject of The Gun and it's schematic and ballistic properties, would you mind posting a 1200-1500 word essay describing in exact detail how the FreakAngel's powers work... you know... cause it's a comic book and all...

By remembering the basics from when I studied projectile physics? The reason why spin is useful in projectile launchers is because the projectile is stabilised by the fact that the axis of spin goes through the exact centre of it. If the axis of spin is even a little offcentre, the projectile will be destabilised - in this weapon, the axis doesn't go through the projectile at all and is indeed more than a foot away from the barrel. Which is, as I said, going to result in the darts being fired in a cone shape.

Look, I'm not trying to nitpick, do it as you want. This is still a great free comic and I'll still read it regardless of my opinions on the spinning gun of death. If you do feel that this minor inconsistency is a problem (which you needn't), you could quite easily just say "ok, it's an area-saturation weapon and it's not required to be highly accurate"- at least in the military, a mounted gun that size and with that kinda rate of fire is going to be either an antitank weapon or an area-saturation weapon, so that'd kinda fit.

Good episode. I wonder if Spiral's catch on the missing boat is a deliberate thing, or just an oversight - no, I'm not necessarily asking for clarification, just wondering. Of any issues, I might have with Paul's art, the stupid reflections in the water aren't one of them.

And I loved the last panel. I can't find it now, because I don't really want to look for it, but I just saw a video on youtube with an electronic gun of some sort that fires exactly how I envision the gun that Paul drew firing. It looks like a gatling, but it continuously fires from all barrels in a spiral. So, that was what I immediately thought of.

Karl may not be able to 'hear' the psychic warnings, but he surely had to have heard the siren? I mean - KK heard it, and she was half-way to Jack, sitting on a (presumably) noisy helicopter.
Karl claimed to have killed Mark, but somehow didn't.
Karl now wears that tin foil hat, which seems to stop others hearing his thoughts just as effectively as it prevents him hearing theirs.
Oh - and he mentioned to Kirk that when he killed Mark, his 'brain was shielded'. Yet he 'heard' Mark's brain die. Yes - there could be an explanation for this, but on the face of it, something doesn't quite add up...

So right now, I'm kind of suspicious of Karl.

I concur, but…

The readers are holding FA accountable to the reality that it creates. While purple eyed telepaths are totally reasonable in the context of the story, physics has apparently not gone completely out the door. Unless, as noted earlier, the gun is controlled by one of the FA kids, the physics of the big ass awesome gun are completely fubar. (But it obviously can't be physically controlled since Warren has clearly explained the operation of the weapon through the "scaled pig" post (something that made me LOL in the office and receive even more odd looks than the day I showed up without any pants.))

Now, there will be no conclusion to the pointing out of this “inaccuracy of physics” unless it is changed for the final print version. And even then the online incident will go down in history as a bit of trivia in the Warren Ellis cannon. Perhaps if FA is ever made into a movie for the masses, the error of physics can be maintained and then it can be included in the IMDb “goofs” or “trivia” category. Point is, these kind of errors happen all the time, the only reason we are so hard on Warren et al is that we expect PERFECTION from genius, (Yes, Warren and crew that was another compliment from a fawning fan) and we are given this great comic in small installments so we have a whole week to pour over the minutia.

More important to the plot and truly worthy of discussion is the aforementioned sixth boat that seems to have broken away from the assaulting group between panel 1 and panel 4, and straycat264’s comments about Kay…

Arkady gets protected all special like. That's more interesting to me than guns. Not that a shoot out isn't fun and all but I feel so dirty afterwards.

She's so powerful, but so vulnerable. Look forward to finding out why. The ongoing ethic they seem to have about not using mental power to fight is another intriguing bit I look forward to seeing unfold. Well, they use them to communicate how to fight but not the way Arkady did with Luke that disabled him. That seems forbidden.

Bwahaha! I'm working gradually on omniscience (my consciousness has expanded as far as the door to my office so far!), so in a few years I won't even need to ride a bus. Are you saying that you believe steam powered whirlygigs are a physical impossibility? They're not! In fact, there are 'steam' engines that exist today which are suitable for small-profile aviation. Both commercially available 'advanced steam designs' like IAV's Steam Cell Turbine and even more esoteric devices like the Sterling engines I've seen first-hand at MIT (carbon-fibre/ceramic, can be picked up by a single adult, run off pretty much anything that'll burn, and have power-to-weight ratios superior to military helicopter engines.) I won't be suprised to see 'steam' power showing up in small-capacity aviation products within the decade.

The FA gatling gun, otoh, is neat looking but simply not behaving as a projectile-thrower subject to the physical laws of this world. I understand some of the reluctance to give in on the point - the image is so fucking cool and probably took a lot of hard work/love to create. If the gun was a 'magical' or 'psychic-driven' piece of fantasy gear, probably no one would quibble with it behaving in a non-Newtonian fashion - ie, magic gets to act like magic. But afaikt, the gun seems to be intended as a straight-up physical mechanism, however unusual its conception and construction. Therefore it intuitively looks like a mistake to some readers when it doesn't behave like a machine, bound by physical laws.

It sucks that the above makes it sound like I don't absolutely love this amazing yarn - I do! FA is one of the things I most look forward to each week - every episode is like a small dystopic steam-powered present exploding on my computer screen.

Had read the first few installments, then stopped, and have now caught up. It's quite fun. I like that it seems rough, and that you're forthright about its roughness. I also like the power-play foundations of the story, and though the blood and missiles are entertaining, I'm waiting for the sociological shitstorm when the cover comes off the Angels part in the recent semi-apocalypse. The dynamic has certain thematic matchups to Nick Sagan's trilogy (starts with Idlewild)--small pantheon of New versus all the strange leftovers of Old, and all of them versus something Bigger. I liked them there, and I like them here. I'm along for the ride.
