    I'm a bit fuzzy on the difference, so maybe I do mean sociopath.

    The distinctions between the two have only recently been clarified. I'm paraphrasing here so somebody should check up--a psychopath is generally not as antisocial as a sociopath. Psychopaths are the people on Wall Street who'll slit someone's throat to get to the top. On the surface, they can seem pretty affable and even pleasant.

    Sociopaths have serious trouble interacting in a social setting. They just can't do it.

    A friend of mine recently graduated from John Jay and I remember having this conversation with him a few months ago. Though my memory might be off.

    @Thom_wong

    Is there a specialized definition for the sociopath that can't be antisocial in person, do you suppose?

    And query to all here;

    Isn't it sort of risky for such people to gather in one spot on the internet? Could someone hack their site and give out their personal info to people these guys have specifically insulted/harassed, for example...

    @AdamK: I seem to remember them being "Fuckwads," not Dickwads, but otherwise, pretty much true.

    As for the article itself--their reasoning for this, in making people stop caring what other people think or say, doesn't work with what the more extreme trolls are doing. I'll bet money that if someone drove their sons or daughters to suicide, or started calling them and taking pictures of their kid's graves, they would react the exact same way. They're just sociopaths with delusions of grandeur.

    Well, on top of the 4chan anonymity, these guys have also meticulously scrubbed all mention of their personal legal identities from every part of the net. So short of being a rogue Master-hacker that doesn't float in the same circles they float in, you're gonna have a pretty hard time of it...

    @Val - One would assume that the sort of people who do the really terrible things don't exactly advertise their age/location/SSN for just such a reason.

    How close to a psychopath do you have to be to imitate psychopathic behavior without becoming repulsed with yourself?
    Not very close at all. Think about the war crimes, atrocities etc that have been committed by completely normal people that wouldn't usually do what they did but wouldn't back down because they wanted to look hard in front of their friends.

    Could someone hack their site and give out their personal info to people these guys have specifically insulted/harassed, for example...
    Not a new tactic. Good luck with executing it successfully, though. Most of us are either open about our identity (RFJason, for example) or extremely secretive (eg Weev) and the difficulty isn't with getting dox, it's with knowing that they're the right ones. Personally, I have some quite convincing fake information that you could easily stumble across if you were looking for me.

    What, are YOU trying to get a rise out of us now?
    Does it look like it?

    I'll bet money that if someone drove their sons or daughters to suicide, or started calling them and taking pictures of their kid's graves, they would react the exact same way.
    Lol. It's not like we generally have sons or daughters, with a couple exceptions. But, taking myself as an example, if someone successfully traced one of my nicknames to my main handle, got my powerword (colloquialism meaning real-name) and came after myself or those close to me? I'd be irritated, I'd retaliate, and I probably have more experience. The nice thing about hanging in groups of like-minded individuals is that there's people all over the world and typically, you can get people irl ruined if you know who to ask. A guy who was ddosing Encyclopedia Dramatica with his shitty little metasploit botnet a couple of months ago had his house broken into and all his machines removed. Now, I don't know who did that - but I could probably guess pretty accurately.

    I was kinda surprised not to see mention of any of the trolls I've met over the years.

    How much of it is IMITATION of psychopathy and how much of it IS psychopathy? How close to a psychopath do you have to be to imitate psychopathic behavior without becoming repulsed with yourself?

    Fake it till you make it

    If you fully and truly dream of being a psychopath (or a sociopath) then spread those wings... it is only one flap at a time before you find yourself flyyyyyyyyyyyyyying

    (at least that is what i tell my students)

    Peeking in here I just had to share.

    This is the most elegant explanation of subhuman behavior online I've seen.
