    I'm keen to get a hold of Crooked Little Vein, but I'm not sure if I should get it via audible so I can listen to it at work, or if I should wait until I knock out a few more things from my pile o' books and get the printed version.

    Thoughts?

    I'm personally a huge fan of audiobooks, but something like this would have to have a very particular kind of reader. Somebody with a gravelly voice who preferably smoke(d)s a lot of cigarettes.

    The main advantage to audiobooks is you can read while doing something else - driving, drawing, house repair, mowing the lawn, you name it. So yeah, I'd say the audiobook is a definite option to consider.

    I tend to think audio books work best when what only matters is the story, and maybe the occasional turn of a phrase. Warren's prose strikes me as meant to be read, to appreciate the words in place and something might be lost to the ear.

    Go for the book. The story is very engaging. You'll end up finishing it in a day or two.

    I'd want to hear some whiskey being consumed and perhaps a little ad lib profanity, that could work.

    The closest thing I have to a book on tape is some Kerouac as read by Kerouac himself, and it is quite amazing. If Warren was doing the reading, I would get a copy. Otherwise I'd just stick with the book, it can be finished in a couple of hours anyway.

    I like physical books much better than audiobooks. Something to read while lunching at work. Make sure not to read while drinking something, though. There's plenty of liquid-sprayed-out-nose opportunities there. Heheheh.....

    Looks like it'll be the bound version then. Thanks all. Unfortunately, that means I have to wait a while until I finish my pile, and still need to figure out what to listen to after I finish Cormac McCarthy's The Road (which is some pretty badass post-apocalyptic stuff, btw).

    My substance - addled memory sometimes has a good side. Forgot I'd even asked my sister for this for christmas, and did a little jig when I unwrapped it and remembered that I had. Quality stuff, and it's a quick enough read that one shouldn't let the perceived convenience of the audio version enter into things. Plus, there are a couple of 'wtf' moments that you're going to want to read more than once, so even if you go for the audio version chances are you'll find yourself wandering back to your stereo/computer/whatever and hitting rewind.

    Hmmm. I don't think I would enjoy a audiobook for CLV... but then I don't really like audiobooks in general. Maybe something about the narrators's voice never sounding as good as the one in my head when I read... But if someone interesting enough was reading it I may be persuaded... I will have to admit that I did enjoy America: The Audiobook But that is something completely different. CLV is badass, however. I ended up buying it for myself, burned through it in a day, then gave it away as a gift to someone that I thought would enjoy it as much as I did. It seemed like a great idea at the time, spreading the wealth and all that, but now I wish I had kept it for myself. Guess that's another trip to the book dealer...
