I dig Mono, but they still reside in the one-CD-is-enough-for-me category, even though I quite enjoy it. Likely on my next post-rock binge I'll get some more, and I still need to pick up some Mogwai.

This week I'm trying out a bunch of folk type stuff, getting recommendations on another board for stuff like Empyrium, early Ulver, Tenhi, Nest, and October Falls. Right now I'm listening to Forest, some half-psychedelic folk from the 60s.

Also Electric Wizard, Neurosis, and Agalloch are likely to be filling me ears when I need more loud for this season. And of course some Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

I've been listening to a lot of "holiday" music in an attempt to make some kind of CD to play in public (at my bookstore job) that will not make my ears bleed (like Bing Crosby singing about the Devil or "Piano Jazz Christmas" ::shudder::). Not enough punks or goths make good seasonal music :-). And I'm using Rhapsody as my main resource and, well, it seems to lack a lot. A LOT.

So, mostly finding baroque stuff, some Irish tunes, and some odds and ends. Also hunting for Chanukah and Yule/Solstice-inspired music too. I am not a Christmas fan, but my Jewish wife has been fascinated with it since the first year we went to my Mom's for the holiday, so we sorta celebrate most of the seasonal holidays (in our own whacked fashion), mostly through ongoing gift exchange. It's a good excuse to buy each other CDs, DVDs, games, trinkets, clothes we would not buy ourselves, and weird stuff.

After that, listened to a bit of Garmarna, Midnight Oil, Flogging Molly, Broadside Electric, Boiled in Lead, and Maddy Prior & the Carnival Band to get squacky carols out of my head. . . .

Eh, just my Pandora stations; lately it's been the one that I fed Depeche Mode and the Cure and some My Chemical Romance and Marilyn Manson and I don't remember what all. I've been in a mood, haven't I.

What's interesting, sort of, is that Pandora has apparently decreed this station must, WITHOUT FAIL, play "Living Dead Girl" by Rob Zombie no less than once a day. No other song has had that honor. I can nearly set my watch by it.

Don't get me wrong, I actually like the song a lot. It's just odd that it does that, and with that specific song. Apparently it has decided it is the perfect song for me to listen to. Fair enough, I guess.

I was going to share the channel here, but hell if I can figure out how. I'm R. Francis Smith, the station's called goth, do whatever.

I just fired it up and it played "Love My Way" by Psychedelic Furs at me. Takes me back.

The Builders and the Butchers, who sound like rock and roll invented in the South during the Great Depression. Funeral folk and burial blues. Had them on loop while I did the write-up of their debut for the Best Portland Albums 2007 in a paper there. Such a fucking awesome band, even when you can't watch as they yell into bullhorns, throw toy instruments into the audience and walk out of the venue as they play their closing song. (Listen to "When It Rains" and "Bottom of the Lake.")

Bottom of the Lake

Jason Webley, that mad half-drowned accordion-playing fool from Seattle.

The upcoming debut from Portland's Per Se. Quirky, charming, lovely little pop songs. "Adelaide" features lines that start with the final word of the previous line. "Adelaide sits and eats her fries and shake/ But she can't shake the thought that astronauts are watching her with eyes of blue./ Blue as ice that will encase the next Ice Age/ And ages later tapes and microfiche are all that's left of me and you."

Loch Lomond. Gorgeous, towering chamber folk. (The MySpace tracks are my least favorite, but here's a radio show they did that includes most of my favorites.)

Stripe II
