I've read Transmetropolitan several times at other people's houses, but have never purchased them.

I want writers and artists to be able to make a living. @shawnclark That's chicken and egg right there. I don't feel comfortable selling 2 volumes of WILDC.A.T.S. So they never sell. and so DC never prints any more of them.

Hell, I've had customers who loved PREACHER, but wouldn't touch Ennis' run (or anyone else's) on HELLBLAZER because it wasn't fully collected in trade. If you make it simple for the customer--"Get these ten and you have basically everything"--then you'll have a book that has a market. Things like Shade may not have sold well when they were coming out, but if the work is good, they can continue to make money on it through the secondary market. How easy would it be to sell Hitman today? "You liked Garth's Punisher run? Get Hitman." That's a sale right there, guaranteed.

Yes, hardcovers just unnecessarily bump up the price. It's better to make sure the works stay affordable. An even better option would be to publish the series as 5 $20 yearbooks, each with 1 year's worth of the series, and a final smaller volume, containing the two one-shots, the 2 holiday stories, and a cover gallery, reprinting all 60 covers full-size (because what's the point of having Geof Darrow as the cover artist if you're going to reprint them trading-card sized) as well as the original paperback covers.

Some retailers might not like it, since it would mean making less off of the complete series, but it would be great for consumers wanting to buy the entire run. It'd probably sell even better in the long run too.

hardcovers just unnecessarily bump up the price. It's better to make sure the works stay affordable. An even better option would be to publish the series as 5 $20 yearbooks, and a final smaller volume

So, say $120 for the 6 volumes, as opposed to 2 "Absolute" editions at $57-$62 each from Amazon? I'm not sure Absolute editions are really that much more expensive. Of course, I could probably get the paperbacks cheaper from Amazon anyway, but they don't tend to have the massive markdowns that Absolute editions do.

The original Transmetropolitan: Back on the Street had a $7.99 cover price, the reprint has a $14.99 cover price. Even allowing for inflation over 10 years, that's a large mark-up. I notice that the original trade was 72 pages and the new one is 144, according to Amazon. Is there lots of bonus material?

 @Kradlum

Supposedly Back on the Street will include 4-6 now.

Amazon or any deep discount online retailer should be able to price DC paperbacks at least 30% off cover, so for general price comparisons best to just stick with the cover price. Otherwise, you start getting into all sorts of silliness about who can get what on ebay for 10 cents on the dollar, etc.

The only floppy of Transmet I do not own is #2. I need to buy the later trades. I also have the Vertigo specials, the one-shots and say the first four in trade. I cherish my Transmets like no other comic. 'Monstering' and 'Business' are two of my fave stories ever, full stop. Often, I yell "MISTER SWEENEY! SHOW US YOUR PENIS, MISTER SWEENEY!" as I ride my bike through town. Which is why kids throw rocks at me. Not to mention what their parents throw at me. I've also quoted the line "Children are very easy to break or assemble wrong." to any parent who will listen. Guess what? More rocks.

Diamond are a buncha bastards. It's there, it's not, it's on order, it's outta print. Next!

Transmet TRULY rewards repeated reading and considering the way things are going, is INCREDIBLY prescient.

Although 5 big $20 paperbacks would be better, this isn't too bad. Evens out the look of the series. Also, the book really took a leap forward after the first short storyline, so it's nice that new readers will get a taste of that.

Perhaps it also means full-sized covers in a couple of the earlier books.

http://comicsworthreading.com/2008/10/28/transmetropolitan-revamp-plan-changes/

The TRANSMETROPOLITAN VOL. 1: BACK ON THE STREET NEW EDITION TP now will include issues #1-6 of the original series, which were previously available in volumes 1 and 2 of the collected editions. It will be advance-solicited in the December Previews to arrive in stores in March.

Following that, the TRANSMETROPOLITAN VOL. 2: LUST FOR LIFE NEW EDITION TP now will include issue #7-12 of the original series; this title previously collected issues #4-12. It is scheduled to arrive in stores in May.

The TRANSMETROPOLITAN VOL. 3: YEAR OF THE BASTARD NEW EDITION TP now will include issues #13-18 of the series; this title previously collected these issues as well as a story from VERTIGO WINTER’S EDGE #2. It is scheduled to arrive in stores in August.

The TRANSMETROPOLITAN VOL. 4: THE NEW SCUM NEW EDITION TP now will include issues #19-24 of the series, as well as the story from VERTIGO WINTER’S EDGE #3 and the addition of the story from VERTIGO WINTER’S EDGE #2. In-store date for VOL. 4 will be announced later.

The TRANSMETROPOLITAN VOL. 10: ONE MORE TIME NEW EDITION TP now will include issues #55-60 of the series, as well as the Specials TRANSMETROPOLITAN: I HATE IT HERE and TRANSMETROPOLITAN: FILTH OF THE CITY. The specials were previously available in TRANSMETROPOLITAN VOL. 0: TALES OF HUMAN WASTE; This volume will no longer be available once current stock is gone. In-store date for VOL. 10 will be announced later.

These volumes are being reconfigured due to retailer requests for a more consistent page count in the series’ early volumes. Martin -- Purely speculation. All of the trades so far have been 6 issues with the exception of volume 4 which had 6 issues plus a few pages from both #2 and #3 of "Vertigo: Winter's Edge". (The two stories from the Winter's Edge's added 16 pages, making volume 4 160 pages instead of the 144 that the others are.) The other two one-shots are "I Hate it Here" and "Filth of the City" which are 48 pages each which seems like a lot to add into 2 of the 3 remaining trades.

Originally it had been stated that there would be 10 trades and that the extra stuff (Winter's Edge's and the 2 one-shots) would be inserted into the story where they belong. That has not happened and therefore I'm guessing that the one-shots will be in an 11th trade.

But hey, I could be wrong.

It seems clear there wont be a volume 11 anymore.

I just hope the last frame on the last issue is still as it is meant to be, and that someone who cares is organising them.

If thats the real Warren who moderates this, which has only just clicked in my brain as being a possibilty, I trust you'll make sure everything is how it should be when I come to the conclusion. Even if you arent the publisher I know you can make shit happen.

I'm going to collect the reprints instead of getting the originals. Both are still easy enough to come by but I do kinda dig not having to worry about where to fit the volume 0 read into the experience.

I've read all of Transmet before and after working a summer job for two months I thought I'd treat myself to buying the full collection. This whole reprint business is proving to be quite problematic though. I already have Volume 0 (the one that won't be reprinted but will be included in V10) and the first volume, which is, as it turns out, the reprinted edition. I'm hoping to get all the volumes off Amazon (UK) since that is usually the cheapest option when it comes to buying comics for me.

After a bit of searching it seems that getting the entire collection won't be that easy. For most volumes but not all, Amazon now sells the reprinted edition. One exception is Volume 4 where the reprint (with the extra Winter's Edge stories) is unavailable and they sell the original instead. If I got that though, that would mean missing out on one of those extra stories, since the first is part of the original V3, which is not available on Amazon.

As for the later volumes, the new V8 is apparently set to release in november and the original is no longer available. The old editions for volume 9 and 10 are still available however.

Trying to wrap my head around all this has given me quite a headache, I might just have to resort to getting all or some of the volumes from my local (and terribly overpriced) comics store.

Incidentally, I rather dislike the covers for the new edition, the giant sideways logo detracts from the otherwise amazing cover art.

In this very thread (page 3), Warren gives this answer to other guy:

- "I've heard it will never happen, but I would gladly pay $150-$200 dollars for a Giant,Coffee-Table Destroying Absolute Edition of Transmetropolitan."

Ellis: "You're telling the wrong person. I'm not the publisher."

I interpret this as a clear indication that if DC decided to do this kind of book, he wouldn't oppose: "Hey, ask DC, not me"

Besides, we're not talking about superseding the trades with any deluxe editions, not by a long shot. We're just asking for a definitive high-end reprint for the audience interested in owning such item, but always keeping the affordable tpbs in print.

That's what DC does. If you check out Diamond's backlist:
http://www.alcatraz-comics.de/orderforms/2011/star_nov.txt
all the deluxe editions of PREACHER, SANDMAN or SWAMP THING have NOT superseded the trade paperback editions. Both versions co-exist, available for the customer to choose between the hardcover and softcover presentations, and there's no reason to believe INVISIBLES will be any different. The 1500 page monster will not mean the end of the 7 INVISIBLES tpbs, just the same as PLANETARY remains available in 4 tpbs, despite ABSOLUTE PLANETARY being published and already out of print.

He and Darick own the characters and the story and the film rights, but dictating in what format the series is collected seems a bit much). Whenever people broach the subject of an Absolute Transmetropolitan to him he always responds with 'Talk to the publisher' and 'I doubt they'll ever do it, because they don't think there's enough money to be made with it.'

I, for one, would absolutely buy an Absolute Transmet, or a Transmet Omnibus. @Tony - when I mentioned the deluxe treatment, I wasn't going for those Deluxe formats that Fables, Preacher and other titles have. It was a broad (but poor) term for luxury format or whatever you want to call it.
@David - Now that you mentioned it, I'm not sure where it was but I definitely have an idea of Warren wanting Transmetro as cheap as possible.

If it had the Sandman treatment (new colors, some art remade, extras, etc.) I'd be interested but otherwise I don't have any interest in a bigger reproduction of the same material I can read on trades.

We can discuss our personal preferences til kingdom come, but the reality is much simpler. Next summer, DC is going to release a fifteen hundred page monster collecting a prominent Vertigo series in its entirety.

And that's an unprecedented move. The closest thing in the market is Jeff Smith's one book edition of BONE, clocking in at almost 1400 pages (I own this book and it proves this kind of thing is perfectly doable). Marvel hasn't gone beyond the 1200 page mark with its multiple omnibus editions. DC is setting a new record here, and 2 things can happen:

A) The book is a failure, and sales are disappointing.

B) The book is a success, and/or even sells out.

If option A happens, they probably won't try again.

If option B happens, they'll immediately start thinking about more candidates for the same treatment. And guess what other prominent Vertigo series clocks in at 1500 pages and has never been reprinted in other format than the lowly trade paperback...

 Thanks for the link.

Exactly the same could be said about Morrison's book:
INVISIBLES was never popular or lucrative enough to merit such a collection either.

In fact, it was rebooted not once, but twice to save it from a definitive cancellation, and the trade paperback editions were published after a while. At first, the trades weren't even comprehensively reprinting the whole series, part of the issues from the first volume were left "orphaned" and only after the series was finished, the gaps were filled with tpb editions. Meanwhile, if I'm not mistaken Transmet tpbs were churned out by DC in parallel to the regular series.

Anyway, we can safely say that INVISIBLES was very probably less popular and lucrative than TRANSMET, and yet here's the Omnibus.

Although one could argue that at this point "Grant Morrison" is a more popular and lucrative name than "Warren Ellis"... sadly, IMO.

Finally, I'm glad that, as I thought, Ellis is expressing just a preference for affordable editions, not a mandate.

A 1500 page TRANSMET OMNIBUS would cost 150 dollars.

Yeah, but you can't pay for the omnibus in 10 installments of $15. THAT SAID, a Transmet omnibus does sound neat. It'd make a great coffee table book for people to peruse through when over, especially a nice fancy one like the Sandman one. But it would be unaffordable to a lot of people, myself included. It'd be a huge splurge for me that I'd really have to save up for (or an expensive gift for someone).
