Good Monday, Whitechapel. I'm up early this morning, may as well turn this one over.

I usually swing by Largeheated Boy's Try it before you buy it posts on Tuesday mornings, too (mostly because I like to put an album cover to the mp3s, yes).

Dead Low Tide:: former Murder City Devils powerful noise-rock masterpiece

Bali Gamelan and Kecak:: primal, soothing, and intense... does that contradict?

Chromeo: Fancy Footwork:: if you took all of the high points from the Breakin' 2 soundtrack and threw in a little Midnight Star this is what you'd get.

Battles: Mirrored:: futuremusic.... sounds like the music that robots will make... in the future....

Yo La Tengo - ...well, I would say I'm listening to their album "I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass" a lot, except the truth is that out of the 15 songs on it, I really only listen to two--the first one and the last one. Between them, "Pass the Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind" and "The Story Of Yo La Tango" [yes, the misspelling is intentional] are 23 minutes of the album, and they're so far above the rest of the songs on there that I can't stomach playing the rest of the album at the same time as those two songs. So yeah, really just those two songs. A lot.

finally got a copy of DRESDEN DOLLS-no virginia. so far im liking it, but the last record i think was more my style.
also, dj TRON-resurection mixtape
was told of a new "violent...and aggressive" manson album in the works so i am imagining that between now and winter.

I need to say how fond of DOUBLE HELIX I have grown in a short time.
This time I'm going to listen to my friends Steeple Remove
They are releasing a new lp. I'm proud of them. They've been playing music like, for ever.

My band (Verbatim) released tonight to the internet a free record called Pool Party.

The whole idea is that we lock ourselves in the studio for the weekend and must release to the Internet whatever we have done by Sunday night. Anything goes. So we threw a party and just sorta made a record while it was going on. Very little rehearsing, very little dubbing. A whole bunch of first takes. Feels to me like a mid-80's Replacements record. And oh yeah, we have a song inspired by the Great Zombie Debate.

We also did another one like this in March called Pizza Party.

I just got Destroyer 666's Cold Steel For An Iron Age and it's jettisoned them to the top of play list rotation. Nevermore's Dreaming Neon Black is coming in around number 2, after that it falls apart, I'm currently listening to some Rollins Band. Some Smashing Pumpkins is extremely possible along with my usual arrangement of Nick Cave, possibly changing to some P.J. Harvey in the wee hours of the morning.

Now halfway over the Prom season. While they are still on iPlayer definite repeat listens to The American Prom for Javelin and Prom 29 for Chen Yi - Olympic Fire (BBC commission: world premiere) and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Kind of a shame that The Stockhausen Prom has gone now. You could argue that his music answers the question "Where's my future \ jet car then?" in one respect.

the fm transmitter for my ipod died, so i've been listening to (my boyfriend's) cds in the car again. it's a nice change from the default shuffling.
today...
skinny puppy- the greater wrong of the right (so far, the only album of theirs i like. it's so... poppy. "pro-test" totally could have been their crossover hit, at least theoretically.)
ohgr- sunnypsyop (first time listening to this today. a pleasant surprise. sounds like the origins of greater wrong's sound.)

"Let it Be" and "Volk" - Laibach

This two great Laibach albuns. But there's something tricky (a good point for footnote, perhaps) in te second one: the National Myths (powerful today as ever, specially when you see this kind of kitsch Olympics spetacle) exploration and desconstruction. The SF culture, since Wells (or, better indeed, Verne) had a strong internationalist notation, and these kind of "primitive" ideology, the ourship of the land and the old ones at that (in German NS way, "Blut und Boden) had little appeal. When I try to remember some great SF Writer with some NS or Ultra-Nationalist ideological sympathies, the task was usually hard (the Fritz Lang wife, Thea Von Harbou, party member since the 1920s, could be a good and isolate example).

Joanna Newsom - Ys

I can't see (or hear) what the controversy is all about. The eccentricity holds my attention, and on a weirdness scale it's fairly low. The Van Dyke Parks arrangements are like Americana on acid. Her voice is unusual; I find it oddly charming. But I'm a big Bjork fan, and have loved Dagmar Krause's voice for 30 years.

An acquired taste, maybe, but you gotta keep acquiring tastes in life.

Can't keep listening to the same stuff all the time, because Nostalgia Is Death.

This week I've been finally getting round to loading my cds onto my computer (I'm slow to cotton on to the digital world) so I've been rediscovering lots of old favourites.

I'm always happy to discover something unusual I've never heard before. Her name has come up here and there over the past couple years, but frankly, it was Warren's description that waved the red flag in front of me (and still makes me laugh even after I discovered I liked her).

Iggy Pop - The Idiot

This is iconic for me... It doesn't sound as ear-opening to me as when it first came out (neither does Bowie's work from the same time), but it's essential.
