Yes, I want to make comics. I've written a few scripts, and right now an artist is illustrating a 48-page oneshot for me. I love the 48-page format, and I would love to hold one of those books with my name on it.

I'll "publish" it through print-on-demand, and I'll send it to any publisher that might be interested. It doesn't matter if they're not: I've created a book and will do so as long as I can afford it. I keep getting projects to the finished script stage, only to have the artist get eaten by wild boars or vagina dentatas or something.

Current projects:
The Pineapple Primary - 48pp book about the 1928 Republican primary election in Chicago, which was the most violent electoral period in the nation's history. Over 100 bombs went off in a 9 month period and no one was ever arrested. Plan on printing a run of 500.
Night Shift - A darkly humorous, hand screen printed, single page, tabloid-sized stories about the modern life of the Vampire. We're doing 20 shorts, printing up 10 hand bound collections, 30 more individual prints from each comic to sell/frame and plan on releasing the whole thing at an art show.
On Aerite Wings - A revisionist history piece involving airships. Don't call it steampunk. There is no steam. I write, but I can't draw for shit, and there seem to be more artists who write than artists who don't, so it's hard to find a partner to collaborate with. Worth the effort, though- hopefully I'll have another comic launch at the end of next month, and god knows how many scripts I've got lying around, just waiting for an artist. I also tend to do a lot of debate and discussion of comics- most notably here and here. Although since then, I've become a little less convinced that realism is the Holy Grail of comics and a little more convinced that a sense of wonder is.

As for publishing, a variation on the Freakangels format makes sense to me - 6 pages a week to build interest/show work, collect periodically (Glenn Moane mentioned the print-on-demand option). I dunno, we'll see how it plays out. Finding an artist seems to be the most logical first step now, so I'll check the links above.

Question for Artists: When you're looking for scripts to take on, what in the "want ad" would pique your interest (other than "cash up front")? Subject matter, script sample...?

So I've now begun 1.5 comics. I've restarted the monkey detective story, The Jungle, with my fiance doing the art this time. I'm also working on writing a story for a sort of thriller/slasher comic idea I had a very long time ago. A friend of mine is interested in doing the art for it, but is presently busy. So, instead of writing a conventional script, I'm trying to write it out as short fiction-short novel and then adapt it into a script whenever she's got the time for it. Comics are the longest thing I've ever written and I find it invigorating. Especially this story I'm trying to write. I've got a shot at having something finally break 1k words.

The artist I've hired now is from Brazil, and his page rate is 35 dollars, which I don't think is that steep. I did a webcomic called "Thirds" for about a year, publishing twice a week. I wrote and drew it, and even with it being B&W, it was a hectic pace.

I'd like to do more webcomics. I've got a fantasy based one in mind that I've scripted out to about fifteen episodes. The arc I'm hoping would take about two years. I've also got a sequel to The Crow I've wanted to do for over a decade, just never known who to pitch it to. In addition, there's a series I'd like to do called The Witness about a minor super-hero with confidence issues.

The problem is that now I want to write them, but I don't want to subject anyone else to my poor attempts at sketch art.

Currently I'm working on putting together an anthology following that formula you recently reposted to Bad Signal, and it's going along pretty OK actually. One of the features will be my prison story The Grave, art by Michael Bramley. What I now call the "pilot episode" was posted to my LiveJournal back in March, and you can still take a look at it here. The form that will go into the as-yet-un-named anthology will be more or less this, although some changes will be made. Another feature I'm working on is a steampunk Weird Western, with an artist down in Gainesville, FL, and I've yet to decide on the third feature. All things considered, it's going pretty well so far.

I'm signed up to PanelAndPixel, of course, and do read it when I remember that it's there. Honestly, the most luck I've had with gathering collaborators so far has actually been the Creative forum on the MillarWorld boards. Just goes to show, you never can tell.

@jscoble -- Seeing as I'm doing much the same with the "band" idea, hope to see how yours turns out!

The biggest issues i'm having is finding an artist to work with. Ideas are plentiful, refinements not so much yet but i cant seem to bring myself to put so much effort into that when i've got no artist to work with. Basically all I do anymore is work, sleep, and write(or do the art for my webcomic). Sometimes I get to eat. But it keeps me from going crazy. And it's something I'm addicted to. If I can make enough money off of it to cut out the "going to work" portion of my day, I'd be really happy. I pay close attention to Whitechapel and most of Mr. Ellis' work specifically because I would like to write in comics some day. Not exclusively, of course, I also want to write in pretty much every medium I can, and see if I can break ground in so-called New Media as well.

Comics in particular interest me because of their flexibility. Text and Illustration go much farther than either alone, but tend to be classified as childish material by professionals--especially college Professors. Talking about comic books in a writing course at a major university is a great way to get yourself docked a half a grade per semester, yet the comic book is one of the most pervasive and consistent sources of serial writing in print today. Despite many critically acclaimed pieces that have managed to garner broad scholastic attention, the entire medium still enjoys little in the way of collegiate attention.

And the industry does not pay writers well enough for major institutions to consider the medium for degree candidacy.

I do have a degree in the more generic fiction writing, and I had to fight to get them to give it to me (in 2000) when I focused specifically on genre work at the University of Pittsburgh. (Ever see Wonder Boy? The professor in that story is based on a guy at Pitt). Personally, I like the challenge, discipline and the way that it's a crash course in becoming a better artist. A lot of work goes into comic making.

But I would not choose to make it my full time job. My attention span is too quick to be able to work on a series all the time. The work was called Booty Call.

I also took Andy Schmidt's Breaking into Comics for Writers course at MoCCA while he was working as an assistant editor at Marvel. It was a real blast and I wrote an "interesting" Hulk/Illuminati story that I've never posted online, yet I probably should since I had some of my classmates gasping for air with laughter. I believe Andy still teaches a similar course, though online now if I am not mistaken.

Now if only I can get a talented artist to draw and color it, post it online and claim parody so Marvel doesn't sue our asses.

Sadly that was two years ago, just before I went to grad school for Secondary English Education, and then changed to Literature, where I think I became less creative, at least temporarily.

And I do a few comics/cartoons occasionally on the Armzrace blog and website.

I'd like to get going and do more work and establish a loyal following, much like our host.

One is making itself really visible, the post-apocalyptic sort of Kurt Vonnegut meets D. Kelly assasination meets ex-cop with cancer meets earth (and London, specifically) collapsing meets nigtmares about people being gased and the inevitability of death and understanding the oroboros and somehow rotten space programme.

Have beautiful feelings about it, as it´s progressing almost every day. Soon want to talk with two industry established great artists about doing it, but first I need to have more material in my hands. So far I´ve got overview of the story, a semi-detailed plot synopsis and some script pages. Don´t know how big it´ll get.

Then doing one submission - short Nightmare on Elm Street story for Avatar Press, 8-12 pages long, should be done in a few days, the story´s on the paper and now needs to be polished and redone and redone till´ it will be just the fine kethamine fueled trip to the nightmarish side of things and back. Maybe he gets back.

Currently getting my head around a writing process that works, trying to refrain from over-planning and self-editing without putting a little bit of distance between myself and the pages first. Submitted a script to one of the Millarworld write-offs some time ago, which got some favourable responses, but was overall rather silly.

Originally it was filmmaking I was into but as a process, it's too goddamn slow for me to be able to enjoy as a possible career, as well as too many variables with what can happen to a script, if you're sticking to that side of things. I like the immediacy of the comic writing process, as well as the lack of limitations in the story you want to tell because there's none of this "budgetry" nonsense... And so much potential for devilment!!

Plus, I love the damned things...

You know, it's funny, because I'm really trying to break into the prose world right now. It seems to me that as a writer, it's kind of impossible to break into comics now without doing work-for-hire. (And even then it's not so easy.) And I have no interest in work-for-hire and other people's properties. The only other avenue is self-publishing, which would probably involve paying an artist to work for me unless I could get him or her to go even on the costs and profits, all of which is absurd. In prose at least it's assumed you will own what you write and assuming you get a publisher -- which is not easy, but certainly possible -- you're not going to have to foot the cost yourself. Which seems a heck of a lot more reasonable to me.

Not that I don't love books. I love prose books and comics.

That may very well be true, but i wouldn't know. While i plan on shopping it around here in Portugal (i know people who claim to know people,or something), the truth is i haven't really thought about it yet. It's only my second serious attempt to write a comic script, and the first was only a 6 page story, so i wanna be sure i CAN write it before making up my mind about where to try to sell it.
But sure, why not Brazil? At this point, even France might be a good option, the artist on the project knows an editor there...

When I'm a bit more organized I'd like to devote an hour a day to a web-comic I'm working on inspired by the look and feel of Masamune Shirow's Appleseed. I've got about 12 unscanned inked pages. I have one script in the noir genre that had an artist attached, but he dropped out. I want to find a new artist, but I decided I want to do another draft first.

Way back in the prehistoric 1980s when I was a teenager, I was allowed to write a screenplay for credit in English class. Although much of the story is what one might expect from a teenager, I've gone back to the basic idea to try to craft a comic series from it.

I'm also working on a script based on my longtime interest in Celtic religion and history, and trying to combine it with my love of supernatural mysteries and superheroes.

I keep two blogs and a LiveJournal just so I can have regular outlets for writing that others can see. I dabbled with comics back in the day, resulting in a single run of a xeroxed book called "Cheap Bullets". (Click that link and you can get a free PDF of the thing.) I have a few scripts, tons of ideas, and one project in the works. Which means I have someone actually drawing it for me instead of writing and drawing myself. I found it too distracting and wanting to edit twice as much while doing each task right now.

The slow grind of doing it after work and in your spare time is probably the most annoying thing about "getting it done". I think myself and my artist both need to get fired so we have some serious time to devote to the project. =)

Warren issued a link to a DESOLATION JONES and FELL script about a year or maybe almost two years ago that I found enlightening at the time.

Since then I have been using Celtx to work in. Which makes collaboration very easy to do and the comic template formatting isn't to shabby. First desperate inkling came when I bought Jimmy Corrigan: Smartest Boy On Earth when it came out in hardback and lent it around the place. A bunch of us were blown away by it and pledged to become comic writers/artists/whatever. Not much has really come of that, to be honest. I can both write and draw fairly well, but I always figured that I lack the kinds of skills needed to write and draw comics.

However, a few things I've read lately - Rian Hughes' Yesterday's Tomorrow, the backmatter in Jonathan Hickman's Nightly News, James Turner's Nil - have inspired me to get off my arse and do something with the skills I have. It occurred to me only recently though that I usually only have one creative ability at a time, verbal or visual. Strange, I know. But I liked the idea of making something that spanned both, using my photography to illustrate a story, but in a comics frame (in terms of panels, captions, story movement) I did a six page script and laid out one page of it. It took me more or less forever to get it right. It was a lot of fun, and I'll probably work on more of it at some point.

So yeah. I want to make comics, but I don't want to work in the comics industry. I have a piece of serial fiction that is being turned into a comic book. It's called Steven, and it's currently set to be published through a small, local company called Comics Obscura. However, every time I get near an artist, they seem to explode. Or implode. Or drop off the face of the earth. My current artist, and longtime friend, seems to be made up of the essence of Mercury in retrograde. This is frustrating, as I've been sitting on the project since 2003.

I have a webcomic that is in its beginning stages, as well. The plan is to publish it weekly, and use it to generate interest in creating a video game in the same universe. A brainstorming character sketch can be found here.

I'm half-assed looking for a replacement artist for the first project. It doesn't involve money up-front, which is why I can't be choosy. However, if the figure mentioned above (US$35 per page) is near standard, I might be able to. Gave a go at 24-Hour Comic Day last year with a friend, which allowed us to both do something we've dreamed about since we were kids. It was fun, a huge learning experience, and it focused us both a bit more.

Currently I have my own webcomic Stamp of Adventure that is mainly a bunch of silly jokes that I wish my nephew could still laugh at. I'm mainly doing the web thing to prove to myself that I can do hit those kinds of deadlines with regularity and some measure of quality. That way I can feel comfortable bitching at my artists and writers when they don't. After all, if some slacker can get the job done then a professional shouldn't have any trouble.
I'm also yet another soul considering Warren's anthology idea, though I'd gear it towards the web for ease of distribution. I'm putting up ads at the local college for artists next week. I have no ability to write (in the sense I have no concept of how to write/script a story competently enough to make it worth reading. Anyone can slap a bunch of words on a picture. It takes a true writer to make it work). So that's out.
I have no ability to draw (unless I'm aiming for something akin to the quality of a 5 year old's finger painting). So that's one more against me.
I have, however, a bunch of story ideas. General stuff, but they work (when I'm thinking about them). But I have no idea how to turn them into anything beyond that, mainly due to the aforementioned problems.
I have the groundwork for what the book is about and what each of the characters mean, but I don't have any idea how to start it and make the ideas flow well.

Hell, if I could just give the idea to a competent writer/artist team and tell them the basic ideas of everything and let them go from there, I absolutely would. But something like that, I assume, would result in some kind of loss of creator ownership or credit, and that's something I'd prefer not to do. That, and my book is another superhero story, so naturally it would never get noticed by anyone anyway.

So far I've written two 6 page short stories and an unfinished larger series. I'm currently colaborating on a 6 issue 22p series with another writer.
Art wise, I've penciled and inked 3 pages from each short story and I'm in the process of doing the concept work and layouts for the first issue of the collaboration.

The existence of a market for any art based on the norwegian language is dependent on artificial life support. Foolishly, I fell in love with a genre with no such life support installed. It's pretty massive.. and we are starting work on actually writing the script for it in the next few months...

I'm also working on a submission for FutureQuake - met one of the publishers at a comic convention, and he said they accepted scripts without art, and sourced artists for you. This has always been my problem - I know loads of artists, but none who want to draw comics. Those that do want to draw comics want to draw David Shrigley-esque stuff, which is not what I'm after. I want to find the next D'Israeli or Rufus Dayglo.

Have a script which is currently being written to submit to TV, perhaps it might make a good comic instead... Im certainly half convinced its too batshit for TV.

Plus I have an artist friend called Leemo, who is working on a comic for my site Weaponizer. It's whimsical and silly, but his drawing is getting better and better. My girlfriend Eilidh is learning to ink, by helping with this project. When that goes live, Whitechapel will know all about it. After that, I'm going to throw down the gauntlet to Leemo and see if he can draw something more strict and complex. He's aready done some illustrations for book of poems I've got coming up with Chemical Poets, which look totally awesome.

So yeah, I wants to write the comics. It doesn't come naturally though. I don't think I'll be ready with something mindblowing for a few years, if ever, and by then I may have had to get a real job. Comics inspire me, they have taught me everything I know... I'll keep dreaming and I'll keep reading.

For almost a decade now, I've been collaborating with artists to create comics. My biggest success so far was securing grant funding for Avant Garde comics, a short lived college newspaper syndication service that paid up-and-comers for high quality, innovative comics. I once pitched a Shadowrun comic to Whiz Kids, and taught comic script writing in my home town.

I'm always looking to collaborate with artists, but I find that most of them either bail half way through a project or that they prefer pay over collaboration. I consider my scripts valuable, something that no one else can contribute, and I write with the intent to prove it. My typical rate is one page of script for one page of art. You can imagine that I don't find many people who like the price.

So, yeah. I'm currently putting together an anthology book, with all of the stories written by myself. Three stories in my hands, another three in production. I have lucked out in having amazing co-creators on all of these stories.

Also, I'm putting together a pitch of another series. Finished a script for it last night, one more script to finish before I send it off.

Oh, and both of these are of an adult nature, and will probably actually never feature my real name on them. But who knows.

Very impressive though. 262 responses in a day's time. Now if we assume that 15% are people posting multiple times, that gives us roughly 219 people in a 24 hour period who are aspiring creators... Guess Peter David was right (I think it was him, correct me if wrong), you don't have fans in this industry, only people who want your job. Well, count me in.

I have published a couple of books, like Desert Rose and Disposable Graffiti. The website is being remodeled, but these links still work for now. I also put out a "retailer edition" of the first issue of a book called Super. We had to cancel the orders (which were fantastic, all things considered) due to a tragic flaw in my judgment (picked the wrong colorist to work with) and now we're holding back until the whole series is finished and we can just do it as one big book.

Some many ideas or the first 10 pages of a script - but I realise that I don't know anyone who could/would draw the thing.
I posted on a few forums, but those things are full of people asking for the same collaborative help to no avail.
I have considered going to London Art colleges and posting signs for COMIC Fans/Artists wanted for team up, but it takes a lot of confidence to do this with a stranger.
The shitty thing is that for all my many friends none of them really cares/understands comics or reading literature etc. I know this sounds weird but it's true. None of my friends really read much, and if they do it ain't the same stuff I do and even if they did-which they don't- they don't draw or wouldn't want to create a comic. Following??
I really respect creators because I have learnt it takes balls to dedicate yourself to a project, with no guarantees of success, just really believing in your vision.
Additional: I find it hard to consider sending off script/ ideas to people I don't know, because they might just think me a weirdo, or if by some miracle I sent them something half-decent, they would just pinch my idea. And who am I gonna send them to?

About seven years ago I did a photocopied mini comic series that I wrote and mostly drew at the rate of ten pages a month for fifteen months. I did another couple of one-shots and from all that garnered a spot in a low-run print anthology, added a short story with an artist who went on to work at TPop to an online anthology and flamed out about six attempts at getting any other projects off the ground. I'd love to write one story a year for the rest of my life in comics form.

Since then I've played with the idea of radio dramas, short video and audio combinations. I need the collaborative input to make it better. It started essentially as a response comic to Ministry of Space, as in finding moments of Australian history that registered as operatic. Only, once I started my background research things became slightly well, unbelievable.

Ladies and Gentlemen a quick note on the life and times of JOHN BATMAN:

*Willingly traveled to Van Deimans Land (Tasmania) which at the time was a strange combination of Abu-Ghraib, Southern plantation society and Iraq's Green zone

*Became renowned as an explorer and bounty hunter

*Hunted down Cannibals, rapists, baby killers and a combination of all three called Monster

*Was one of literally two men to act with any kind of human decency during Aboriginal genocide known as the Black war

* Captured Mathew Brady (who at the time was the most wanted man in the world) and disbanded his guerrilla bush ranger army, in order to earn the freedom and right to marry the woman he loved

* Boldly went exploring in a sailing ship called the Enterprise, and founded the city of Melbourne

* was an absolute piss pot who died of venereal disease by age 38

Seeing that those are just the highlights, you can see for yourself that John is the quintessential Australian hero. The only problem is the issue of publishing a comic with the word BATMAN in the title and trying not to get sued.

Yeah - as an aspiring kinda-artist as well as maybe-writer, I´d love to make a comic or two. I´m way too uneven as an artist to support a full GN as of yet, but I´m still working on that web strip. We´ll see.

Still into the third draft of my Great Novel, and I´ve pondered making a webcomic teaser/prequel to that. I have to put some serious work into architecture references before I can give it a shot, though. Alright. My comics are in a few different stages of production. I'm working on a six-part series that I plan to pitch to some comic publishers soon. I have plans for a completely different long-term series, but I'm taking Mr. Warren Ellis's advice with the "keep it short" guidance, and working on the smaller series first. No one is going to buy a sprawling epic from an unknown. I'm also working on a comic strip that I am going to show to my nearest metropolitan newspaper, so that could be kind of cool. I'm writing a lot of things, hoping to turn it into a career, and having quite a bit of fun while doing it. I figure, if my work is good enough, I'll get published. I've submitted ideas to everyone from Avatar to Marvel's short lived EPIC line, and found similar results. I also write just about every other form possible; I'm a freelance sportswriter here in Texas, I've written several screenplays and created more than a few plays for the stage, stumbled through novel treatments and churned out enough poetry to choke a large pachyderm .

I've worked my way into the place all writers say one must be in order to claim themselves as such; I'm putting food on the table for the family through my words. Thanks to writers like Warren, Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman and their inspiring works I'm going to keep typing out pages and dreaming of that blessed day.

Also, I think it's of note that I'm Brazilian and that there's almost no market for national comics around here. Theoretically, should I ever have several million in capital lying around, I'd start a comics company as a tax write-off project. The business plan would be to take all they guys that I don't see enough of, give them creator-owned contracts for all their work, and then just turn them loose. Specifically, these would be people I personally would love to see more of, such as: Don McGregor, Roy Thomas, Bill Messner-Loebs, Rich Buckler, Len Wein, Steve Engelhart, Don Perlin, and lots of other people I miss. The whole point would be to let them do whatever they wanted. I drew Starship Troopers: Extinction Protocol (written by Cy Dethan) for almost 2 years which came to an end early this year. Workigng with the same writer I have illustrated a short story "Remember This Moment", and am lettering his OGN Cancertown (out at the end of the year through Insomnia) and the first appearance of Harlan Falk :Zombie Negotiator that will be in 11th hour.

Aside from working with Cy I am drawing 3 stories for the next 3 Accent Uk anthologies - Westerns, Predators and Victoriana and having a great time :)

Going to be doing a big (in size - 90" square) mixed media piece with a textile artist friend and Cy based on Cancertown
