EDIT: All right, I give up. I started this thread to find out about locations that celebrate New Year's properly. But instead you all would rather detail how you're staying home for New Year's this year. I bow to thread drift.

I'm not bitter at all.

So what are you doing for New Year's? I'm staying home too. I'm in Anchorage Fucking Alaska, and when I say "If there was a bright center of the galaxy, this is the place it's furthest from," I mean it more literally than Luke did. It's fucking cold and dark and dead here.

My family, or more specifically my dad and his friends, spends New Years at my house or one of their houses getting plastered on crappy American beer and laughing together. Personaly, I prefer getting tipsy through malt liquor and either watching movies or fucking around on the internet.

Essentially, I'll probably do the same thing as I do every other day, but with alcohol involved. Yay me.

I remember the 2000 new years party, my home town of around 20000 people closed off the main street, people were allowed pretty much anywhere, all the hotels/motels opened up their first floor balconies, there were people drunk on rooftops and noone seemed to care (and noone was hurt surprisingly) - insane night, sadly the town will probably never see something like that again.

Not sure about this year yet. Going out, but the clubs where I live now are pretty average...

Hmmph, as an IT guy I spent the 2000 new years alone in a hotel near our Dublin office in case it blew up when the year changed, starving hungry because it was $1000 a head or something to get into the restaurant.

I suppose it was memorable...

Year 2000 I was working in A&E, pulling a toothpick out of a four year old's foot. Then ten minutes later dealing with dead kiddies from an awful car crash.

This year I'm doing medical cover for Trafalgar Square and writing a bit for The Guardian about it mostly via live-blogging.

I like working it - it gets crazy, sometimes funny, sometimes tragic, but you always end up having a memorable night.

And I don't have to welcome in the new year with a hangover.

I honestly don't have the faintest clue where I was on Jan 1 2000.

As I get older I have been making a point of curling up in bed with a good book.

In the late 90's I was in jail and after the end of the year the jail was going nonsmoking. This was a huge deal as of the 200 prisoners on my unit I was the only nonsmoker(I had mixed feelings about it). The guys were discussing what to do and the funniest thing I heard was the idea of a sit down protest. You go out in the yard and refuse to get up and come back in. I laughed and pointed out that as it was Jan 1 in Saskatchewan the weather was probably going to be around -45 and they would all freeze to death before any of the undoubtedly drunk guards even noticed. I was laughing until someone came up with the next idea which was lynching the only nonsmoking inmate.

Fortunately I was let out before Xmass (I love Canada) and did not have to be in a huge room with 200 scary dudes going cold turkey on new years.

A good book and some yummy treats and a thick blanket are definitly my idea of a good time now.

If it were up to me, I'd be at The DNA Lounge, because they always put a good holiday show on. Had a terrific Halloween there a few years back.

(Jan 1 2000, I was in Germany, drinking champagne and watching fireworks. This year, I'll be at home with family getting bladdered.)

Last year I stayed at home, programming Joust in BASIC on my TRS-80. It was Cincinnati, smack in the middle of the ghetto, so it sounded like Beirut outside, and I love* the smell of gunpowder. Pretty fun.

I like smallish parties, this year I'm going to a semi-formal masquerade at an art gallery. My man-thing will be DJing, and there will be an opium den!! Not actually with opium, though. Should be a hoot.

Last year I sat in a basement and watched couples throw up on each other.

Jan 1, 2000, I spent it in Montreal with my oldest friends... and a family with generators and tons of canned soup. (Just in case)

This year? I'll spend as much time as possible inside a movie theater, paying for one show, seeing as many as possible. Or I'll work. Double time and a half on holidays. Yes I am just avoiding high school friends and one of the exes. They don't understand that I work so I can leave the country. They don't understand I don't like sitting in a basement watching couples throw up on each other.

2008 - Year of the Fuck-Pig. Couldn't be any worse than 2007 - Year of the Shit-horse.

2000 was spent sitting on a massive spar of rock looking down into a valley that contains my home town. I was with some friends, we were drinking champagne and enjoying the massive firework displays that were being put on everywhere. My home town is a lawyer monoculture and conspicuous consumption is mandatory. Everyone was trying to prove they had more money to send up in smoke than their neighbours. It was pretty cool until I realised that I'd drunk two bottles of champagne and was now going to have to walk down a steep and treacherous pathway from the moors in pitch darkness and abject drunkeness.

Last year was spent enjoying a psychotic breakdown and self-medicating with alcohol alone in a darkened house and near complete silence.

This year I'm going to be sober, sane(ish) and actually enjoy the company of my fellow man. There are a couple of house parties going on that I could go to, it's just a question of whether watching one group of friends collapse into alcoholic oblivion is going to be more or less amusing than playing board games with another group of friends who don't really go in for drunkeness.

The whole paying money to get into your local on New Year's Eve seems bizarre and pointless to me and going anywhere outside walking distance of my home will be financial suicide. Holiday taxis tend to ignore your wallet and go straight for the internal organs and blood relatives.

My husband and I have been hanging out with some hippy philosophy students who've become our best friends lately. We discussed taking a few gallons of home made wine and a tent or two out to the woods here for drinking and merry makin'.
If we don't do that we may just lock ourselves in the comic book store overnight...get some cajun food and wine and rent some movies...
Haven't been invited to any other parties yet...but something might come up...

I got out of work on 2000 with just enough time to drive to my favorite local bar. It was pretty cleared out and they had loaded up on little bottles of champagne. They had a discount on Mimosa's for months afterward. It was pretty anti climatic. I believe I heard Prince do 1999 yet again.
This year I tried to explain to the boss that they really aren't giving my the holiday off if I have to work from 11 pm to 7 am. He didn't buy it. In this case I will be on call. Unless I can persuade my fiends to only go to places with wireless broadband and carry the laptop around I will probably be at home.

Tonight a man in a van will arrive, pick me and my drums up and take me to an as yet undisclosed location in Edinburgh where I will (inappropriately, perhaps) play rock, funk and hip-hop beats for an evening of ceilidh dancing for drunken Scottish revellers. For this I shall be paid a large amount of the currency of the realm in used, non-sequential banknotes. I see fine ales and single malts in my imminent future. It's work, but not as we know it.

Living the rock & roll lifestyle here. Home alone, drinking inadvisable quantities of Jack Daniels and headbanging to my personal ultimate playlist of doom. This is definitely the best option - I am at my parents house, in a village in the far north of Scotland. Were I to show my face in the local pub tonight, looking like I do ("long hair?! on a man?!??!"), the consequences would not be pleasant.

I will most likely be spending tonight with my new projector and an Akira Kurosawa film festival.

I am no big drinker(I much prefer high quality drugs) but I have a collection of good liquor in those tiny airplane ottles that I have been collecting all year.
I have never tried Cognac so I am looking forward to trying the Remy Martin. I also have a couple mini bottles of Glennfiddich and some Chivas so I can try to judge for myself
whether or not a good blend is better than a equivalents single malt. I am starting out with some Bacardi and diet coke right now though.
