Driving home the other night I accidentally tuned into the BBC Radio 1 chart show, which I kept listening to because something sounded wrong... Eventually I figured it out: now their chart includes downloads, and this week everyone is downloading Slade and Wizzard and Paul McCartney and Band Aid and Andy Williams and so on to make Christmas Playlists.
All this reminded me to dig out my own Christmas song playlist. Over the years I've gotten this to the point where it has almost none of the things Radio 1 were reluctantly playing, so I reckon one good push of suggestions from the Whitechapel locals will make it completely interesting.
I'll offer up one of my favorites to get started: I am a big fan of Marcy Levy (a.k.a. Marcella Detroit), and her version of Santa Baby can be streamed from here.

There is nothing more insidiously evil than those generic Xmass tunes the stores start playing in mid nov. They get stuck in your head. They are awful and the only reason they play them is to suck money out of you. A country in Europe banned then from the workplace except on the 24 and 25th as a health and welfare law.
Imagine working in some retail hell for 12 hours at a time ,tons of rude people and the same 10 Xmass carols over and over again. Canada and especially the US are the worst for all the consumer crazyness. The sheer mass of Xmass related garbage boggles the mind as well. Oh wow! I love Christmas music so much, and really... I'm sure deep down inside you all do too. C'mon!

C'mon! Just a little?

OK so anyway the best Christmas song ever is The Jackson Five's version of Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, but after that I'd strongly recommend:

Low - Just Like Christmas
James Brown - Santa Claus Goes Straight To The Ghetto
Milton Delugg & The Little Eskimos - Hooray For Santa Claus
Crash Test Dummies - Jingle Bells (kind of a Ukrainian-death-chant version, lots of fun)

All of Phil Spector's "A Christmas Gift For You..." except for that final Christmas message from Phil that kinda makes my skin crawl.

Any of Johnny Cash's Christmas stuff is guaranteed to be PHENOMENALLY depressing if that's what you're looking for this season.

All those great Christmas hits that y're all probably pretending to dislike, but especially:

Nat King Cole - The Christmas Song
Wham - Last Christmas
Jona Lewie - Stop The Cavalry
The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping
Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You

Such great songs.

And for more obscure pop stuff...

Someone gave me a Christmas CD by a Danish Beatles covers band, where every song is a classic Christmas song fitted perfectly into the exact rhythm, style and structure of a classic Beatles tune. I can only find White Christmas/Ticket To Ride at the moment, but it's all awesome.

There was some sort of b-list power-pop Christmas supergroup called The Tycoons who did a fantastic song called Every Other December, sung from the perspective of a couple at a Christmas familly gathering, who everyone thinks are going to break-up, but who in fact have fallen back in love, and are secretly expecting a baby, but perhaps that's the only thing that's bringing them back together, so maybe it's not such a great thing.... a fabulously complicated and subtle love song.

The Damned - There Ain't No Santa Claus is lots of fun too, but doesn't sound too festive. Same with The Eels - Everything's Going To Be Cool This Christmas, which does include the line: "Baby Jesus / Born To Rock".

Sorry about the long post, but somebody had to take this post seriously. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

And where did you hear about this?

Very interesting, if true. I'd definitely like to know more.

I do indeed work in retail. And the holidays do indeed infuse my days with cheer, let me tell you. Nothing brings out the happiness in people quite like feeling obligated to figure out gifts their loved ones might like, purchase those gifts on time, and plan and execute a big shenanigan about the whole thing, all at the time of year when their circadian rhythms are constantly asking them why they got out of bed that day.

The phrase "Christmas music" for me is a synonym for a horrible strangled sound in the back of my throat. @ Miss, God, Banging In The Nails is a great song.

For all you retail workers, I pity you greatly. The music shop two doors down from where I work has, at present Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You, Wham's Last Christmas, John & Yoko's Happy Christmas (War Is Over) and Paul McCartney's Wonderful Christmastime on constant repeat from the speakers outside their store. So, blasting that music onto the pavement. ONLY those four songs AND ONLY 30 seconds of each at a time. It's like the most annoying ADD Christmas mix ever.

And I still love Christmas music!

And spare a thought for the poor staff of the stores in Otaru, Japan. Otaru is famous for making intricate glasswork, music boxes and kaleidoscopes, and has dozens of shops selling these ummm... trinkets? And EVERY SINGLE ONE has a different, horrendous music-box-chime-muzak Christmas Mix CD. I cannot imagine that any of the people working in those stores will be anything less than genocidal by the end of the holiday season.

Hit-or-miss at times, but the hits are lovely.

Can't believe Run DMC - Christmas in Hollis hasn't been mentioned.

Louis Armstrong - Cool Yule seems fairly friendly as well. And I'm personally partial to Wesley Willis - Merry Christmas.

The Vince Guaraldi Trio's Charlie Brown Christmas Special Soundtrack is a crowd-pleaser. Good jazz and no annoying lyrics to get stuck in your head (other than 'Christmas Time is Here').

For sheer geeky joy I can heartily recommend Porn Orchard's 'This Holiday Season'.

http://mrdankelly.vox.com/library/post/porn-orchard-this-holiday-season.html

It's a song that imagines what might happen if Pete Murphy (of Bauhaus) and Tom Waits collaborated on an Xmas song. It involves reasonably good impressions of the aforementioned legends and some very silly lyrics. Awesome stuff.

Aside from that I've been working in retail for the last six years so actual Xmas music tends to make me slip into a coma and mutter about wrapping paper and seasonal discounts until people take pity on me and shoot me full of tranquilisers until the holiday period is over.

personally, i hate all christmas music to death.
it's probably more because i hear too much of it when i hear it at all: many of the songs are actually quite good, and it takes at least some skill both to write and to preform them. if it weren't for the fact that they're played nonstop for 2 or 3 months in every store ever, i might even enjoy the occasional song.
that said, when far removed from the flood of other songs, most variations of santa baby are fairly enjoyable.
