But it occurred to me that it might be a good idea, here in the space between the end of Vol 1 and the beginning of Vol 2, to launch a FAQ thread for the book. For those who haven't gotten to grips with the wiki, or may just be generally confused or have peculiar questions.

That would utterly defeat the purpose. DOK is, in one respect, an attempt to make near-future sf work. Not as steely extrapolation, but as long-range weather forecast -- these things may not definitely happen, but they all could happen.]]>

In terms of DOKTOR SLEEPLESS (I don't remember much of TRANSMET), it's just a nod to how quickly we assimilate our monsters. How many years was it between Charlie Manson being the terror of California and Charlie Manson being an image on joke t-shirts? I have a shirt somewhere with a pic of his face and, underneath it, the words CHARLIE DON'T SURF. Hitler's a cartoon figure now. Eminem dressed up as bin Laden within a couple of years of 9/11.

I can see a number of parallels: Two people dying with no signs of injury and no presence of toxins in their bodies, it took place in Brazil (where John Reinhardt went to drink Ayahuasca, though admittedly a big place), and of course the "masks" (which bare no resemblance to anything in Doktor Sleepless, but which I could not help but mentally connect with the box of masks left at Catastophe books.)]]>

Even if the eye color returns to normal over time, the scars - or traces of them - would still remain. Therefore, unless proven otherwise, I'm inclined to believe the Doktor was not infected with St Theresa's - and consequently, the angel constructs have to be real.]]>
