Ariana usually swings by Largehearted Boy's Try it before you buy it posts on Tuesday mornings, too.
I've been noticing a lot of bands I listen to are either citing Sisters of Mercy as an influence or outright covering their songs, but I've no idea where to start. What I've heard so far has been enjoyable.
- "The Gospel Comes To New Guinea" (this is a great album title, isn't it?) - 23 Skidoo - "Under the Skin" - Ice - "Figure 8" - Elliott Smith - "Lonely is an Eyesore"- The historical 4AD collective album
Maybe a compilation / best-of would be a better place to start, at least for an initial taste. If I like what I hear I'll end up listening to everything anyway. Thanks.
This past weekend I reacquainted myself with a public radio program called Nothing but the Blues (KJAZZ out of Long Beach, CA - kkjz 88.1, streaming online at jazzandblues.org). Forgot the unadulterated joys of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker.
I'm visiting SoCal (aka home) and missed the Long Beach Blues festival by a week. The DJ Nick Gerard played a lot of the folks who were big hits and they were a lot of fun. He did note, though that he has a hard time finding "young" guys playing some blues. Even folks new to the scene stage seem to be in their 40s. Pity, maybe. But it might be a scene that's actually encouraging to older folks and not in a desperate hunt for the next callow, young thing to exploit.
I can't seem to stop listening to Death Magnetic, the new Metallica album, it's just so damn catchy. It's caused me to pull out Ride The Lightning, so I'll be listening to that as well. Notable others: G.G. Allin-Is, Was, Always Will be Smashing Pumpkins-Zeitgeist The usual assortment of Nick Cave System Of A Down's self titled.

Bingeing on the complete Blue Jam radio series. You can torrent it here) and glimpse for yourself all of mankinds hypocrisies in a neuro-plastic ellipse.
Bracken's Eno About The Noise is beautiful and fascinating. Despite the story of its conception, I don't find it at all gimmicky or wanky. So, yay for that.
