I read, and loved with my soul, the Dragonlance series back when I was a freshman in high school. Now that the animated movie is gonna hit dvd mid january I cracked open Chronicles again just to refresh myself, despite the movie's probably suckness. Anyways, I'm feeling in the mood for some higher brow fantasy and heard about this dude. Anyone read Game of Thrones? Anyone recommend it?

It's a fantastic series. Possibly the best I've ever read, miles better than Dragonlance (which I also read in high school). You won't be disappointed, wonderfully gritty stuff, just don't get too attached to any one character, Martin has a tendency to kill them off.

A Song of Ice and fire is very, very good.

It's "fantasy for people who hate fantasy" - no elves, no dwarves, next to no magic; actual well-rounded characters and a storyline that actually makes military and social sense.

I'm not a big sword and sorcery fan myself, and I think this series is stupendous. Stick with it and you will find yourself liking almost everyone you hate at the end of this book, and possibly hating some people you really like.

It's heavy on medieval politics, battles, and scheming. Fantasy elements eventually come into play, but mesh seamlessly.

It's epic in scope and adult in nature. Totally worth reading.

I got into Dragonlance and the Forgotten Realms series in Elementary School and have been into fantasy every since, and Martin is by far the best fantasy writer I have come across. A Song of Ice and Fire is the best fantasy series I have ever read, personally. You will probably like Game of Thrones, heh.

Also, he's written a few other things, my favorite of which is The Armageddon Rag, which is about 60's/70's rock, Armageddon, and a journalist trying to figure it all out, great book.

George is the man. It is the only fantasy series I'd recommend to people, to be honest. It is dark, brutal and grounded in allusions to historical realism. While there are fantasy elements, they are minimal. Great stuff. I enjoyed those novels more than any fantasy I've read including Tolkien, Howard and Rowling.

George actually has had an interesting career. He wrote for the Twilight Zone back in the day and had a sort of first career as a horror novelist back in the 80's when it was still a thriving genre in bookstores. He's also written award winning sci-fi (multiple Hugo, Nebula, Quill and Bram Stoker awards) and some Conan stuff.

Avatar is actually adapting his most famous horror piece, the novel Fevre Dream. We released a review book not too long ago but the series doesn't have a definite launch date just yet. I'm betting someone around here could post some of the gorgeous art from that book...

Cover of the Preview:

There is not a single character that i've both liked and disliked at some point. This is one of the strengths of the series.
I always always recommend these books with no apologies for the last one... by the time anyone gets to it, they love the story.

The free iTunes downloads (There is a podcast and a similar interview) of the author speaking are fantastic. I think it's an excellent series but a few things to let you know about before you read:

1. Do not become too attached to the characters. GRRM has no problem with horrifically killing ANY of them at any time. Be warned.
2. He's very slow to write the series. Yeah, I've read this series and really like it. I was turned onto it after I read his short story "Hedge Knight" which I hear got made into a comic book although I've never read it. What keeps me coming back is the amount of detailed descriptions he uses of more or less mundane things that makes this world he's created into something vivid and real.
As just about every person in the series I've cared about is now dead I'm trying to figure-out just where he's going with the series. I'm starting to wonder if he knows. I keep coming back though.
Samwell FTW

They are excellent books, I am however curious how things will hold up in the long run as we transition from War of the Roses to what, by necessity, must start to conform to a more traditional fantasy narrative in the aim of seeing a resolution.
We have had both a steady increase in "magic" and a clear line of development of several characters into the people, and more exactly hero's journey archetypes, they will be for the narrative to come to its end.

This is not a complaint just an observation, and one more then in part linked to the narratives of Jon Snow and Danerys as they are clearly on parallel journeys in very classic sense, and more so are almost certainly the central characters of the entire work when all is said and done.

Eggzomin I agree about Starbuck. I liked it but it seemed like his agent said "write a Sharpe novel for Americans". I would love for their to be a Sharpe novel that took place during the napoleonic wars but over here in the colonies. "Sharpe of the Mohicans" maybe? I loved the ones about the English longbowman and the Saxons and Vikings. It is a great way to learn about history and I have even considered doing some reanacting. I also considered doing some WW2 reanacting as a German officer but with my rather chunky build I would end up looking more like Herman Goring than Otto Skorzeny.

The thing I don't like about most sword and sorcery books is the characters are usually way to 2 dimensional.
That's one thing i liked about Cornwalls Viking series is the people acted like real people.

I would actually like to read a really well written sword and sorcery book. Do you think Song of Fire and ice would be a good choice for someone who does not usually like the genre?

As an afterthought, does anyone know when HBO are planning to start showing Song of Ice & Fire or Preacher?

Last i heard they are both "in development" - simply properties HBO has the rights too and some work has proceeded on, so a possible answer,in fact likely answer, is never. A few years away at the earliest if they happen. Judging by comments made by Ennis and Martian, Preacher is in more active development by far.

Robin Hobb is an excellent writer, I really enjoyed the Farseer Trilogy and have read bits and pieces of her later work.

One High Fantasy Author I would recommend as extremely good is R. Scott Bakker: The Darkness that Came Before, The Warrior Prophet, and The Thousand Fold Thought. It is a complete trilogy, but I really hope he has some more to write about these characters. It is just really deep, epic worldbuilding of the best sort.

I am going ot have to read the Song of Fire and Ice, series though I will admit to being leary of starting a series that isn't finished yet.

Unsub - it might be worth you checking out Conn Iggulden's Emperor series (about Julius Ceasar). Similar to Cornwall in style, I found.
